Trips at the Lewis School of English

We believe learning should not be confined to the classroom!

That’s why our trips, as well as being fun-filled, offer opportunities for you to practise your English and learn about British culture.

Linking Learning with Leisure

Each trip has a learning theme that is explored during English lessons and then reinforced during the trip. In this way, you will be prepared with the knowledge and vocabulary to help you get the most out of your visit, making it a more vivid and memorable experience.

On each trip, our Activity Leaders will bring to life the sights of the city with interesting stories and facts, as you discover British culture and attractions first-hand.

Our trips are interactive, too! You will have a Lewis Passport with a specially designed multiple-choice quiz for each trip, so you can practice your English and record what you have learned.

Safety and Welfare

Your safety and well-being are our top priorities. On all trips, you willbe accompanied by our Activity Leaders in a ratio of 1:20. All our leaders are trained in welfare and safety issues and many also have qualifications in first aid.

You will be supervised at all times. We also provide you with a map for each trip and there is a 24-hour telephone number that you can call if you are lost or in difficulty.

London Trip

Full-Day Trips4

London is one of the world’s great cities – some say the greatest! It was the Romans who first built the square mile now known as the City of London, which is the financial centre. Now 2,000 years later, it is the biggest city in Western Europe and has an economy that is larger than that of many countries.

London is famous for its architecture, with some parts - like the Tower of London - dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, while others, like the Shard, have only recently been completed. London has been badly damaged several times, notably in 1666 when much was destroyed in the Great Fire, and then in WWII when bombs flattened many buildings. The streets of London are a living museum and are best seen on foot.

Some of London’s most famous attractions include Buckingham Palace (the Queen’s official home), the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. And of course, shopping! Central London is a shopper’s paradise, and the city has every kind of shop imaginable if you know where to look!

Photo opportunities are everywhere - famous buildings, London taxis, double decker buses, the Queen’s guards and the many colourful street performers. Have a great time in the capital!

The coast of Dorset and East Devon recently became a World Heritage site because of its beauty and because lots of prehistoric fossils have been found there. It is now known as the ‘Jurassic Coast’.

On our trip, we will visit:

Lulworth Cove This, is a beautiful bay in the shape of a horseshoe. It also has an amazing cliff walk that leads to Durdle Door, a rock formation that looks like a door.

Southampton Trip

Full-Day Trips6

A major commercial centre and university city on the south coast, Southampton is both modern and the historic.

The city is best known for the Titanic, which sailed from here in 1912. Today, Southampton is still the ‘cruise ship capital’ of England and is a major centre for sailing and shipping. In 2012, the Sea City Museum opened, on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. This fascinating museum tells the story of Southampton’s maritime past. The city also has beautiful medieval walls that date back over 900 years.

Southampton’s population of 240,000 includes 40,000 university students. This gives the city a young, vibrant atmosphere. Visitors will enjoy the popular West Quay Shopping Centre - one of the largest in the south - and also the huge city centre parks that make Southampton one of the greenest cities in the UK.

You may also have heard of Southampton’s football team, which is one of the top Premier League clubs.

New Forest Trip

Half-Day Trips 7

The New Forest is a National Park with approximately 150 square miles of unspoilt, natural beauty. As well as forest, it is also made up of heathland, and is notable for its wildlife

Most famous are the New Forest ponies. There are about 3,000 ponies roaming wild across the forest, as they have done for at least 2,000 years. The ponies are quite accustomed to people and you can actaully get close to them. As you explore the forest, you may also see cows, donkeys and possibly even deer.

The forest is not actually ‘new’ at all. It was created as a royal forest in 1079 by King William I (William the Conqueror), particularly for hunting deer. It was first recorded as “Nova Foresta” in the Domesday Book in 1086.

The New Forest became a National Park in 2005 and is a popular tourist destination.

Walking tour and entry to Salisbury Cathedral

Magna Carta• Find out about one of the most important documents in English history.

Salisbury Trip

Half-Day Trips8

Salisbury is a beautiful small city in one of the oldest parts of England.

The city’s most famous attraction is its impressive cathedral, right in the centre. The spire is the tallest in Britain (123m). Salisbury Cathedral also houses the Magna Carta, one of the most important documents in English history. It was issued in 1215 and was an agreement between King John and his barons, limiting the powers of the King. 2015 marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna and there is a special exhibition inside Salisbury Cathderal.

The Cathedral Close and the Market Square are among the best known parts of Salisbury, but all through the city centre you will find attractive buildings from medieval times and the Tudor period.

Another feature that makes Salisbury special is the River Avon, which runs through the heart of the city and is home to many ducks and swans.

Bournemouth Trip

Half-Day Trips 9

Bournemouth is one of the best seaside resorts in the south of England, with seven miles of golden, sandy beaches. It’s very popular and very busy on hot, sunny days!

The beach is a hive of activity, with people enjoying swimming, sunbathing, beach games and watersports. It also has very pretty parks. Look out for the aviary with tropical birds and the hot air balloon offering a ‘birds-eye’ view of the city.

Bournemouth is located directly to the east of the ‘Jurassic Coast’, where lots of dinosaur fossils have been found. The nearby coastline was also very important during World War 2, for example as a departure point in the D-Day landings.

With its pretty parks and beautiful beach, we’re sure you’ll like Bournemouth. It’s the perfect place to enjoy some fish and chips in the sun!
