We’re excited that you’re here in Corporate Woods this weekend to celebrate the 27th year of SoJo Summerfest, formerly known as Jazz in the Woods. I continue to be amazed that this annual event is put on by a wonderful group of volunteers who are members of the Overland Park South Rotary Club. I appreciate their continued effort in organizing a premier event for the Kansas City metro area. You’re welcome to attend any of our weekly Wednesday morning meetings at Deer Creek Golf Club for additional details on membership.

SoJo Summerfest brings together folks of all ages and walks of life so that they can sit back, relax and enjoy a weekend with the local bands that love to perform under the stars. This is one of the largest, two-day music festivals in the Midwest and it simultaneously provides a family-friendly weekend of outstanding music while rais-ing funds for local charities that support the needs of Kansas City’s children. SoJo Summerfest has raised more than $1.5 million dollars in its 27 year span and 100% of those net proceeds go directly to our designated KC Charities. For 2016, those charities are Opera-

.

Last year’s donations were used to provide much needed services to the most vulnerable in our city. For example, the SoJo Summerfest charities were able to bring therapy to children with special needs, provide pre-school and after-school opportunities to inner-city youth, and provide food to those who struggle to make ends meet. The volunteers from these charities and the volunteers from Over-land Park South Rotary have given countless hours to make SoJo Summerfest such an incredible success.

We thank you for sharing your weekend with us and hope that you enjoy the exceptional musical talent that SoJo Summerfest is bring-ing to Overland Park for this special weekend! Please consider giving where appropriate to help us help local children’s charities.

Each year more than 30,000 people gather at Corporate Woods to relax and enjoy music performances. These performances are made possible by the hard work of members of the Overland Park South Rotary Club and the generosity of many local corporations whose sponsorship have allowed this event to raise more than $1.5 million for local children’s charities during the past 27 years.

This summertime event, formerly known as Jazz in the Woods, features a variety of music every year. In the past, attendees have heard traditional jazz, ragtime, fusion and contemporary jazz, blues, country, Celtic pop/rock and more. This year, the Friday night lineup features A La Mode, Shades of Jade, Rattle and Hum, and Big Time Grain Company. Saturday night we’re bringing in the sounds of Blair Bryant, Run With It, Elton Dan and The Elders.

SoJo Summerfest prides itself on being a family friendly event, offering fun diversions especially for kids. Although no outside food or drink is allowed at the event, there are many food and beverage vendors open during the event, with net proceeds from

A La Mode is an authentic jazz band built upon Kansas City’s rich heritage of swing and blues. Though it’s been years since these giants ruled the scene (Charlie Parker, Count Basie and Coleman Hawkins), the Kansas City sound lives on. Kansas City-based jazz and blues group A La Mode builds upon that heritage and adds their own playful spin that is classic-meets-contemporary.

One of the pioneers in the modern jazz music scene in Kansas City, Shades of Jade, has been on a constant momentum of evolution and change to create aural paintings of music. Since debuting

RATTLE AND HUM is, quite simply, THE PREMIER U2 TRIBUTE. Placing a priority on accurately delivering the SOUND of Ireland’s greatest export, RATTLE AND HUM is the U2 tribute most dedicated to making you feel as if you are experiencing the real U2 in con-cert. No other band can match RATTLE AND HUM’s passion and mu-sicianship when it comes to performing U2’s vast catalog of songs, from their debut album “Boy” in 1980 all the way to the present…well, except for U2 itself.

“Fingerprinted Memories Pt. I” they have received rave reviews with their most recent music video from their single “That One” featuring Derick Cunigan, in preparation for their next upcoming album.

Led by the young artistic director Joshua Williams from St. Louis, Missouri, the band has already begun to receive national acclaim, opening up for acts, such as Earth Wind & Fire and Dwele in 2015. Infusing elements of jazz, R&B, soul, pop and rock, the best way to describe the raw emotion of sound from this band is eclectic. “We are trying to reach a level of music that transcends genre boundaries,” Josh explains, “everyone’s feet will tap while we express our human experiences through the universal language of music.”

If you like Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Brad Paisley, Alabama, Garth Brooks and Johnny Cash… you’ll love these guys.

His upcoming second release “Gold” is due the summer of 2016. Blair Bryant started out like most kids playing drums, congas and bongos. He picked up playing the bass at age 13, and after master-ing that, incorporated lead guitar, lead bass and keyboards into his repertoire. He has been writing and recording since the age of 16, and has amassed hundreds of original jazz compositions where he plays all instruments.

-tronic fretless, 7 String Conklin, 6 string ESP and 5 string Fender Jazz basses. He also plays Yamaha Stage Custom drums, Korg, Kurzweil and Yamaha Motif Keyboards, Fender Rhodes, Hammond Organs, B3 and XK1. Blair’s “sound” (writing and playing style) is upbeat, very layered, lush and evocative of many different tonal colors and moods.

He has been favorably compared to Stanley Clarke, Joe Sample and Wayman Tisdale.

Run With It is a rising pop- rock band. Fans of Imagine Dragons and The Killers will love this powerhouse trio. 2016 is already building up to be a great year as they continue to expand nationally.

Based out of Kansas City, Run With It is grabbing the attention of fans with every new show. Run With It has garnered critical media acclaim,

they have also opened for Jake Clemons (E Street Band), and played Starlight Theatre’s VIP Lounge twice (for Earth, Wind & Fire, Goo Goo Dolls, Buddy Guy, Steve Miller Band, and Daughtry). This past year they played at Kauffman Stadium four times including game 1 of the World Series.

To succeed professionally, a band has to have that “something spe-cial.” Run With It’s comes from professionalism, a great stage show, and high energy, catchy, chorus- driven songs you can’t help but sing and dance to.

When asked what drives them, Run With It frontman Miguel Caraballo said, “We believe art can change the world.” They see art change the

-my works to provide affordable music lessons to the urban youth of Kansas City.

Run With It pours hard work and an expectation of excellence into every booking, live event, promotion, rehearsal, video, and recording. Its setlist is non stop, and is intentionally designed to keep corporate and casual crowds alike moving and engaged.

Named The Elders for good reason. Decades of combined experi-ence have taught the band smart stagecraft, superb showmanship and taut professionalism. The Elders were founded in Kansas City in 1998 by six musicians with a passion for music rooted in Irish jigs and reels and American folk rock. Lead singer Ian Byrne, a native of Ireland, along with founding members, Steve Phillips, Brent Hoad, Norm Dahlor, and relative new-comers, Kian Byrne and Diana Ladio, perform at music festivals across North America and Europe.

Their original songs offer delightful story lines, with vibrant narra-tives that explore history, legends, tall tales and true-life experienc-

a group dynamic and featuring a mesh of textures, soaring vocals, and barn-burning instrumentals, fans can tell you that the real magic happens on stage, where their personal and musical chemistry forg-es a deep sense of community with their audience.

Operation Breakthrough 1-page

Operation Breakthrough is one of the largest, single-site child-care center in the state of Missouri. Every weekday, under one roof at 31st and Troost, the Center provides nationally accredited high quality early childhood education and meaningful after-school activities. The 400 children at Operation Breakthrough, ages 6 weeks to 13 years, come from working-poor and homeless families. In addition to educational programming, the Center provides nutritious meals; on-site pediatric medical care in a clinic

operated by Children’s Mercy Hospital; on-site dental care; therapy and psychiatric treatment for children facing issues of family violence, abuse, or trauma; speech and occupational therapy; violence prevention education; pre-literacy and literacy programs; tutoring and mentoring; and a wide array of before/after-school and summer enrichment activities for school-age children. To help strengthen the families who have children enrolled at the Center, Operation Breakthrough offers educational programs to our parents. We also offer emergency aid (including food, clothing, diapers, furniture and household goods); housing and utility assistance and supportive housing for parents in recovery as well as clinical case management by an on-site staff of four clinical social workers.

This year, we are proud to be one of the recipients of the SoJo Summerfest! Your support will help us

fund these programs for our children and families.
