Passion.

It's what it takes to run a family businessand the Carney family served ourcommunity for over 30 years. They gave us a place to gather; shared in ourcelebrations and comforted us during our losses. As they close the doors for the final time this month we wish themall the best in their future.

This month also marks the 3rd year we have been deliveringcommunity events and local news to the residents and businesses along the Rt 50 corridor. When we started the paper we did not realizethe passion that would be involved. But as we grew and the communitywelcomed us into their homes our passion was ignited. Our team wascompleted when Karen, our artist came on board a few months intoproduction. Karen brought us to the next level, our paper becamepolished. She changed the logo, the layout and the overall quality ofYour Hometowne. Karen shares the same passion we do. Our goal as a team is to provide you with a quality community oriented outlet forlocal businesses to advertise and neighborhood events to be published. As you look through the ads in this book remember, these smallbusiness owners are your neighbors. And they have passion.

TEENS AND CONTACTS There is really no perfect age to start wearingcontacts-babies can wear them, and so canseniors. However, because our teenage yearsare a prime time for the development ofnearsightedness, many kids find that theyneed to start wearing prescription eyewearsomewhere around their teens. And whilesome teenagers may opt for standardprescription glasses, more are beginning to

lean towards contact lens. One reason that teenagers prefer contacts as opposed to prescriptionglasses is due to their image. Teens can be very self-conscious, and manyfeel more attractive and accepted without a pair of eyeglasses in frontof their line of vision. However, image is not the only benefit of contactsfor teens.Because most teens are active in different sports and activities, contactlenses may be the safer alternative when it comes to vision correction.Unlike glasses, contacts are unlikely to be damaged during basketball, football and other contact sports. When it comes to deciding if your teen is ready for contacts, the issue isprimarily about whether or not they are responsible enough to wear andcare for their lenses properly. Contact lenses are one of the safest forms ofvisual correction. However, when not used as directed, there can be seriousconsequences. Therefore, if your teen is thinking about getting contacts, make sure that they follow these important contact lens safety tips:Never Share Contact Lenses with Friends. Doing so could result in thepassing of dangerous microorganisms that cause serious eye infections inthe long run.Use Proper Contact Solution for Cleaning. Always make sure to use thecontact lens solutions that are recommended by your eyecare professional.Never use tap water in any area of your lens care, including rinsing as itcontains micro-organisms which can lead to serious eye infections and lossof vision.Don't Sleep In Your Lenses. Most contacts are not designed for overnightwear. Overnight wear of daily lenses can create an increased health risk andcan create multiple problems for your vision. Therefore, the healthiest wayto wear contacts is to remove and discard them each night.Be Wary of Special Effect Contact Lenses. These lenses are fun and safeas long as they are properly fitted and prescribed by an eye carepractitioner. Never buy them at a beauty parlor, swap meet, or at any storeor online without a prescription.Your eye doctor can help you decide which lens is right for your teen. Inaddition to your teen's preferences, the doctor will evaluate his or her eyestructure, tears, and visual acuity to determine what lenses will be healthyand comfortable.

DECORATING TIPS FROMTHE SPECKLED HEN To help simplify your decorating project, eachmonth I'll be sharing “Decorating Tips fromThe Speckled Hen”! Last month we discussedthe basics: primitive themes and decoratingyour walls.

First impressions are often lasting ones, so this month let's talk about theentrance to your home.

Now that fall is here (one of my favorite seasons), we have plenty of newaccessories and ideas for primitive decorating! Garnish your porch withbittersweet, pumpkins, mums and cornstalks - maybe gather them aroundan antique chair or rocker (come see what I've done in front of The SpeckledHen for an example). A nice touch is the addition of a hand painted harvestsign above your entranceway.

Entering the home, welcome your guests with pumpkin spice or harvestscents. A fragrant, flickering candle will set the tone and ambiance for therest of your home. I have many kinds: scented, battery operated, and timercandles! Place a candle inside a piece of colonial tinware to give your roomcharacter. I also have nightlights for your hallway (or bathroom)!

Another way to add warmth and style to your home is by decorating withcolor - add a bush of faux sunflowers in a colonial pitcher to a table in yourentranceway (some great examples in store). I also have beautiful, locally-made pumpkins; gather these on your stairs, on a bench or crate - a nicefestive addition!

Finally, a simple yet impactful accessory is right underneath your feet - adda primitive rug that has a splash of autumn color. Primitive county décorgoes a long way - just these few accessories can make your guests feelwelcome and your home feel cozy!

These ideas and suggestions are in addition to the many items featured inThe Speckled Hen.

I've received new shipments of fall and Halloween decor, jewelry, candles, signage, prints and much more! I've enjoyed helping you choose the perfectgifts and home décor items - and can't wait to see you during your next visitto The Speckled Hen.

CONSIDER THESE FINANCIAL GIFTS FOR YOUR GRANDCHILDENNational Grandparents Day was celebrated onSeptember 9. I didn't realize it was a holiday and in therush to start the school year, missed it completely. It ismarked on my calendar now and I will help my sonremember his grandparents next year! But it got methinking about my many clients who are grandparents.

If you are a grandparent yourself, you already know the pleasures of havinggrandchildren in your life. So you may want to take this occasion to think ofways you can help those grandchildren get the most out of their lives.Perhaps the most valuable thing you could give to your grandkids is the giftof education. Consider this: Over a lifetime, college graduates earn, onaverage, about $1 million more than those without a degree according tothe Census Bureau. So, putting money toward your grandchildren's collegeeducation is probably a pretty good investment.Furthermore, your grandchildren may well need the help, because collegeis expensive and costs continue to rise. Consequently, you may want tocontribute to a 529 plan. You have several options for how the money canbe invested and contribution limits are quite high. All withdrawals are freefrom federal income taxes, provided the money is used for qualified collegeexpenses. (Keep in mind, though, that non-qualified withdrawals will betaxable and possibly subject to penalties.) Plus, if you invest in one of NewYork's 529 plans, your contributions may be deductible on your stateincome taxes. If you name one grandchild as a beneficiary of a 529 plan and thatgrandchild decides not to go to college, you can switch the account toanother grandchild - in other words, you maintain control of the money forthe life of the account.Of course, despite its economic benefits, college is not for everyone. So ifyou wanted to provide financial help to a grandchild who seems likely tochoose a different route in life, what could you do? If your goal is simply to provide a gift, and you are not concerned with howthe money is used, one possibility is to set up a custodial account. You canfund a custodial account with many different types of investments, but theuse of the money is entirely up to your grandchildren when they reach theage of termination in whatever state in which they live.On the other hand, if you want to give your grandchildren a financial giftwith greater control, you may want to speak to your attorney about anirrevocable trust. You can fund this trust with either cash, securities, or lifeinsurance and you can specify at the time the trust is created how andwhen the funds may be used. So for example, you can provide that thetrust pay your grandchild a certain amount of money at one age, withanother installment coming several years later. Keep in mind, though, thattrusts are complex instruments and may have tax considerations, so inaddition to consulting with an attorney, you'll want to discuss your planswith your tax advisor.

VILLAGE OF BALLSTON SPA CORN STALKS AND BROKEN FLOWER BOXES...As I pull into our driveway, I gaze around at thefestive fall decor. The cornstalks surround thelamp post that allow the light to flicker throughits leaves and branches. The wreath on the dooris welcoming with its soft yellow and orangehues. As I open the door the smell of autumn

fills the air with a candle that sheds its scent of fresh baked applepie. The miniature pumpkins and gourds from the local farm standadorn the table, inviting friends and family to sit for a spell. I amhome! We have taken much pride in our home. Making it a place wedesire to be. A friend and I were talking not long ago. The subjectof a busy work week and even busier weekends seem to take overthe conversation. The "honey do" lists and projects that havebeen beckoning since early summer are still not complete. It isfunny how the lists are getting longer rather than shorter. Werealized it is hard to find any "down time". It made me think...arewe putting so much time into our homes that we are forgetting tosit down and simply enjoy them. As the leaves are covering themanicured lawns and the last of the flowering plants shed theirblooms, I look around. I notice the flower box in the front windowis a bit dilapidated. Ok, ok, who I am kidding here, the wholefront panel has fallen to the ground leaving a clump of soil and athree sided pile of wood. I say to myself... "I need to get a newflower box!" Only to turn around and see that wonderfullyadorable picket fence lining our front cobble stone walk sheddingits paint. Wrinkled and shriveling up from the years of neglect. One might think, how quaint, and yet I know these items need togo on the "list". I will eventually get to all of them. In the meantime, I will enjoy this broken down old house with family andfriends. If you stop over and come up the walk, your shoes may becovered with a few specks of paint chips. You may want tomention that the flower box in front is broken and the fence onthe side of the house has lost a slat or two as well. But when thatdoor opens and you smell that fresh baked apple pie and sit downat our table, you will know that you are welcome in our worn, slightly broken, but thoroughly loved home."The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it." - RalphWaldo Emerson"Take time to care for your house on the outside of course, butalways, spend more time making it a home on the inside." - PattieRakvicaAs always, I wish you peace, joy and many footsteps on yourcobblestone walkway.

The Mayor, AKA Ralph DeLuke has spent25 years helping people in ourcommunity grow their businesses, mailtheir packages, provide local productsand dedicating his life and family tobeing there for all of us. A formerShopRite manager; Ralph took a leapof faith and completed an out of statepackaging and shipping seminarbefore opening Mail 'N' More inGlenville along with his wife, Kathyand son David in 1987. They soonrealized that the area was growingand the need for services they provided wasgrowing right along with the population. By the late 90's theywere busting at the seams and needed a bigger building.

Relocating to their current location on Rt 50in 2000 they doubled the size of theirstore. This allowed them to not onlyincrease their services but gave them anopportunity to have a large inventory ofeverything ranging from Office Products toSports Memorabilia. Ralph and Kathy alongwith David have collectively provided ourcommunity with the GO TO place for shipping, mailing and supplies for your business along withlocal products from Hot Fudge, Candles toSpartans paraphernalia for our BH-BL students. But honestly it is more than what sits on theirshelves and the quick easy services you can get atMail N More; it is about a truly family ownedbusiness. Each time we go there they are bustling around waiting on theircustomers. They are wrapping packages, making copies, or helping customersfind what they need. They also produce most of the printed material you seearound in our area; placemats, business cards, personalized stationary andwedding invitations. Their copy services now include state of the art lasercopies on a wide variety of paper weight options with collating, stapling, reductions or enlargements, sizes up to 11x17 on the spot or larger sizeswithin 24 hours. Transparencies and laminating options are also availablealong with carbonless forms. They have a graphic design department and evenprivate mailboxes!

They do all this while they are chatting with the locals about the “goings on”on the Rt 5o Corridor. Mail N More IS the place to stop and see what'sgoing's on in the community up and down the Route50 corridor fromBallston Spa to Schenectady. Hence the reason Ralph has been awarded thetitle of “Mayor” by us locals.

The DeLuke family has come a long way in their business. It is a far cry fromthe single copy machine that was the foundation of their ability to offerservices that included UPS, Federal Express, a little mail for the postal service

and a limited selection of office supplies,Mail'N' More now boasts a full line ofpackaging supplies such as bubble wrap, fillersor containers for the do it yourself customer;or you can just drop it off the let themprofessionally package your item. Large orsmall you can be confident your packagewill be will be handled with care so as tosafely arrive at the destination via UPS,Federal Express, USPS or Freight withpricing that is competitive with the“Big Boys”. And they will do it all witha friendly hometowne smile!

Along with Richard Doyle, who hasbeen a fixture behind the counter for several

years now, you can expect courteous and prompt service.Whether your shipping something precious or something as simple

as mailing a letter; Mail'N'More will fulfill your expectations and beyond. With a ton of inventory on the shelves to choose from it's a great place topick out a special gift for that NFL or MLB sports enthusiast, or resupplyyour student in school. If you're a small business like us, all the forms youneed are right there along with rewriteable CD's or DVD's and other itemsyou might not expect to find without travelling to the Big Box Stores. Theysell a large variety of local products. It's one stop shopping when you go seeThe Mayor.

On Saturday and Sunday September 22 and 23rd the Track of ChampionsFonda Speedway closed out the 2012 season with a big two day racingprogram. Rain came in after the qualifying heat race events were completedon Saturday and cancelled the feature portion of the racing program whichmeant that all of those feature events would be run on Sunday. In the rain delayed 602 Sportsman feature from Saturday, Mark Mortensenand John Scarborough started theevent on the front row of the 25-lapevent with Mortensen taking the leadinto turn one after he got stuck in themiddle of Ray Zemken andScarborough at the drop of the greenflag when Zemken made it three widecoming down the frontstretch.Mortensen would pull away early butScarborough was able to close in by lap10 and when Mortensen tried to go tothe outside of a lap car in turn four heslid up the track allowing Scarboroughto get by for the lead. The first of onlytwo cautions was out for Scarboroughon lap 10 after he clipped the insidewall in turn four and was forced outacross the track, making contact with alap car and spinning out resulting in a flat tire. Scarborough pitted for a newtire and restarted at the rear of the field.Mortensen regained the lead at that point but on the restart Troy Palmermade a move by Mortensen for the lead and at the halfway point in theevent Palmer held a half straightaway advantage. Going into turn two on lap16 something broke on Palmer's car as he slowed in the turn and drove tothe pit area with Mortensen again taking over the lead.Rocky Warner started the event in the 11th position, moved into the secondposition on lap 15, and began pressuring Mortensen for the lead four lapslater. With one lap to go the caution came out giving Warner one more shot

at the leader but despite contact with a lap car coming out of turn four latein the event Mortensen was able to hold on to the win in the YourHometowne sponsored #1M car and gave his father Bob a great birthdaypresent in the process. The win for Mortensen was his third of the season and the seventh of hiscareer in the division with Warner, Brian Gleason, Kenny Martin Jr., and Mike

Ketchum completing the top five in theevent."When John got by me I said oh no herewe go," Mortensen said in victory lane."Then he got into the wall and got theflat tire and I said okay. Then Troy got byme but had problems so I was able toget the lead back and hold on. Luck wason our side for a change. I have to thankeveryone who helped get this back-upcar together after we wrecked our newercar in early August and all of mysponsors."During intermission Mark was alsopresented with the 2012 Most PopularDriver Award for the 602 Sportsmandivision with the award given to Mark byJim Ellis of the Gloversville, NY Leader

Herald Newspaper who sponsors the award on a yearly basis.Car owner Bonnie Mortensen would like to thank all of the crew, sponsors, family members, and friends who have come to the track all season long tosupport her race team and her son Mark who is the driver of the car.A reminder as well that Bonnie has new "Mark Wear" for sale including t-shirts, crew neck sweatshirts and hooded sweatshirts for those cold winterdays which are coming up and with the holidays just around the corner theywould make great gifts! Have you ever really given thought to the impact ofwhat happens when you make a conscious effort to“think and buy local”?I'm not just talking about patronizing your localfarmer or browsing the community farmers marketon a weekend. I'm talking about the 100's of locally-owned small retailers which populate almost every

mini-strip mall around our towns and communities. Some of them may seea blip of business during the summer tourism season, but most depend yearround on the traffic of local patrons like you. Each day, without thought we commute to work and probably pass anynumber locally-owned businesses, coffee shops, gift shops, auto repaircenters or that corner bakery.Just look around as you drive to work today or on your next trip to the supergiant box store, you'll see what I'm talking about. These are your neighbors, friends and community activists; they need and appreciate your support.I know that within minutes of my house in Ballston Spa, there is anindependent toy store that has bailed me out with a last-minute birthdaygift more than a few times. The knowledgeable proprietors peddle dolls toGerman-engineered wind-up trains, bug-collection kits to theatricalcostumes. Perhaps more important than their inventory, they've kept alivethat elusive remnant of the retail experience-service. They gift wrap for freeyear-round."Local shopping" is a conscientious effort to patronize independents, orlocally owned businesses, over chain stores when it's possible to do so.

We believe that the true comparison between independent businesses andchains is about "overall value”, not just price. There are other factors, suchas service, selection, durability. You have to look at the lifespan of productsbefore determining whether they are more expensive than at chain storeswhere higher sales volume tends to lower price tags.Your decision to buy locally should be a lifestyle choice that reflects acommitment to the community.Studies have determined the economic impact of 10 local businesses in acommercial district against that of chain businesses in the area. Of every$100 spent at local businesses, $68 remains in the economy, while of every$100 spent at a large chain store, $43 remains in the local economy. Forevery square foot occupied by a local firm, the local economic impact is$179. For every square foot occupied by a chain firm, local economic impactis $105.Shopping at locally owned establishments can leverage community fundstimes three, on average. For example, by supporting a local clothingboutique, a consumer is also supporting a local attorney, tax preparer, andprinter. Local businesses tend to source small manufacturing and bankingneeds closer to home as well. So, on your next trip to the super shopping center, look around and see whatimpact you can have to keep your community strong.Take a look at www.locallivingin.com for local retailers who regularlyprovide discounts to local patrons in appreciation of visiting their business.Think and Buy Local!

THE LAST WEIGHT LOSS TIPYOU'LL EVER NEED By now you've just about had it. You've been exercisingand eating healthy for ages, but haven't met yourweight loss goal. What gives? It's an issue that everywhole-grain-veggie-and-lean-meat-eating healthseeker faces at some point in their fitness journey.Until you come face-to-face with one ugly truth about

yourself, you'll always be stuck in this limbo of doing the right thing, eatinghealthy and yet not having the stunning body to show for it. Here's yourproblem: You eat too many calories. That's it. Master this problem and you'llquickly and easily achieve the body of your dreams. "But I only eat healthyfoods, so quantity doesn't really matter," you're thinking. While I applaudyou for eating healthy foods, you're fooling yourself if you think quantityisn't an issue.

CALORIE COUNTING WORKSHave you heard of the professor from Kansas State University, Mark Haub, and his famous junk food diet? As an experiment for his nutrition class,Haub put himself on a diet of almost exclusively candy bars, packaged cakesand processed snacks. The catch was that he only ate 1800 calories each day- when his previous diet, of normal and healthy foods, was about 2600calories each day. Within two months Haub had lost 30 pounds and his BMIdropped from the overweight category down to normal. While I would neverrecommend eating junk food, this is quite a dramatic demonstration of howreduced calorie intake works for weight loss.

START YOUR FOOD JOURNALFood journaling used to be a cumbersome act that involved lugging arounda journal, writing down each food item throughout the day then lookingeverything up at the end of the day to manually tally calories. Not soanymore. Today food journaling has gone digital. Download a food journalapplication to your smart phone and at the touch of your fingers you'll beable to look up food items and instantly see your running calorie tally. Meetwith your doctor to determine a daily calorie count that will allow for safeweight loss and diligently maintain that number. This one small, proactivestep will give you structure and clarity when it comes to making foodchoices and will quickly result in pounds lost and goals achieved.

To meet your weight loss goal quicker, pair your calorie-specific eating witha consistent and challenging exercise routine. My exercise programs arespecifically crafted to get you into amazing shape. I'd love to hear from you.Call or email today to get started.

Stuffed Pork chops from Garofalo'sApple sauceVegetable of your choice

This one is undoubtedly the easiestrecipe/dinner solutions so far. There are times in all of our lives that there is simplynot enough time to prepare dinner. Whentimes like that come around, I find it easy to drive to Garofalo's and pick up theirready made stuffed pork chops. The chops are large and juicy with a stuffing that is crafted from their own spices and breadcrumbs. The prep time is minimal as all you need to do is simply brown each side in a sauté pan with a little olive oil, cover them in a shallow pan with foil and pop them into a preheated 325º oven for about anhour or the internal temp is 160º.Serve with a side of apple sauce and a vegetable of your choice for a succulenthealthy meal!

The Double M Haunted Hayride has become an autumn tradition formany and is located adjacent to the Double M Western & Feed Store onRoute 67, one mile west of Exit 12 off Interstate 87. Owner Leo Martinalong with his parents started the Haunted Hayrides during the fall ofhis freshman year in college in 1991. At the time, it was part of a

franchise operation based inSyracuse, operating similarlyto 250 other HauntedHayride locations throughoutthe country. The franchisebrand had signed notedhorror film actor VincentPrice as its spokesperson.During those early days, LeoMartin's Haunted Hayridesdrew attendance of about6,000 people per season.

When the franchise businessdissolved in 1995, Leo optedto continue to build thebusiness on his own. “It wasan exciting time, taking thisbusiness that previously hadbeen under the direction of alarger franchise set-up, andbeginning to make decisionsindependently, based on howwe thought we could bestserve our customers,” notesLeo who created the hauntedcowboy host, Scary Harry, totie into his parents' western-themed store.

It was about that time Leomet his wife Jennifer whotook over the administrativeside of the business allowingLeo more time to focus onthe operations andattractions. Keeping up with

scary techniques and technology brings the Martins in touch with peoplefrom all over the country. They attend haunted industry trade shows tostay current and always bring something new to the Haunted Hayridesevery Halloween season. Their favorite show is the TransworldHalloween & Attractions Show in St. Louis, where they see the latest inprops, animation, and costumes along with seminars on make-up,lighting, and other topics that allow them to learn from some of the besttalent in the industry. An estimated 20,000 people are expected to visitthis seasonal attraction from late September through October.STAY TUNED!

GEEK TIP OF THE MONTHThere’s a nasty computer virus going aroundthat shocks users by putting on the screen aclaim that the FBI and the federal governmenthas taken control of the computer because ithas been linked to illegal activity. It is scary!Reveton is described as drive-by malware

because unlike many viruses—which activate when users open a file orattachment—this one can install itself when users simply click on acompromised website. Once infected, the victim’s computerimmediately locks, and the monitor displays a screen stating there hasbeen a violation of federal law.The new FBI scam tries to convince users that they have donesomething wrong and have been caught. It then demands that the user purchase a pre-paid debit card for $200and enter the card number so the “fine” can be paid and the computerunlocked. We do encourage individuals to take the proper precautions, because itis dangerous from the perspective that if individuals purchaseMoneypak cards and pay the ransom they have no way of getting themoney back or filing a claim,Federal investigators confirm it’s just a new twist on an old theme usedby scammers – scaring people into sending them money. But technical experts say the computer effectively is worthless until thevirus can be cleaned.Do not pay any money or provide any personal information.Contact a computer professional to remove the infection from yourcomputer.Be aware that even if you are able to unfreeze your computer on yourown, the malware may still operate in the background. Certain types ofmalware have been known to capture personal information such asuser names, passwords, and credit card numbers through embeddedkeystroke logging programs.

As always, Safe computing until next time.Cheap Geek Computer Services

Did you know?About five hundred years ago, when Middle English
