Freising’s unique city structure and many cul-tural landmarks have been shaped by over 1000 years of history. Immerse yourself in a city that’s older than Munich, known as an El Dorado for the fine art of brewing, still the spiritual centre of Upper Bavaria today, a hub for scientists and students from all over the world – and packed with surprises great and small.

Magnificent Baroque, stunning views

Extending along the banks of the River Isar, Freising features two striking high points in its northern area: the ‘Lehrberg’, hill of saints and scholars, with the Prince-Bishops’ histo-ric residences around the cathedral, and the ‘Nährberg’, hill of sustenance, home to the Weihenstephan campus. 475-metre Cathedral Hill, crowned by Romanesque towers, looks back on some 1,300 years of history and is

among the most richly storied points in Old Bavaria. Once a ducal palatinate and later an episcopal seat, it is the city’s landmark. Don’t miss St Mary’s Cathedral, with its glorious Alpine Baroque interior by the famous Asam brothers; explore the medieval crypt and drink in the views of the Alps from the belvedere of the prince-bishops’ residence.

Beer and science

Like Cathedral Hill, the outline of Weihen-stephan Hill (496 metres) is visible from afar. The site of a monastery during the Baro-que period, today it houses the historical and modern premises of TU München (Munich Technical University), Weihenstephan-Tries-dorf College and various research facilities. Over the decades, Weihenstephan has de-veloped into a teaching and research centre for ‘green’ subjects that is unparalleled in Europe. Sharing the hill is the Bavarian State Brewery of Weihenstephan, founded in 1040 and claiming to be the oldest brewery in the world. Freising’s second brewery, Hofbrauhaus Freising, also boasts a long history, evolving

from the prince-bishops’ former brewery. A cool, fresh draft beer made in Freising in one of our beer gardens or taverns is a must.

Riverside city

Between Cathedral Hill and Weihenstephan Hill lies the picturesque old city, a jumble of quaint lanes and elegant patrician houses lining the main street. Parts of this historic quarter were built on marshy land, so that many of its heritage-protected buildings still rest on wooden pile foundations. Sparkling streams are integral to the cityscape; from the south, the lush green of the River Isar’s water-meadows winds through the city, while Moosach Brook ripples around the buildings in the centre.

A paradise for rose-lovers

With an average age of around 41, Freising is Bavaria’s youngest city. But the 8,000 or so students in Freising are not the only ones to find happiness here; lovers of roses and gar

dens are also drawn to the cathedral city. Horticulture and gardening are popular with amateurs and professi-onals alike – the latter in the ‘green centre’ of Weihenstephan. Explore the colourful show gardens in Weihen-stephan, the fragrant and medicinal plants in Oberdieck Garden and the forest trail in the ‘Plantage’ on the edge of the city. In spring, rose con-noisseurs will love to stroll through the old quarter’s rose-fringed lanes and visit ‘Rose Island’, Am Wörth.

The heart of your visit

Choose Freising for your stay and you’ve made a great choice. The heart of Old Bavaria is easily accessible by air, car, rail or coach; it’s only 40 mi-nutes from Munich or Landshut, and around 20 minutes from the airport by city bus or taxi. Cyclists love the extensive network of routes in and around the city, and the hop-growing region of Hallertau is within easy reach for day trips.
