Explore & DiscoverBroke Fordwich in the Lower Hunter Valley sits astride the Wollombi Brook – known locally as Cockfighter’s Creek – that flows into the Hunter River near Walkworth.It is an area of hills and plains and is known for its stunning natural beauty and peaceful rural ambience. Flanked by the Brokenback range and including parts of the World Heritage listed Wollemi and Yengo National Parks. Broke village with its rustic country churches and old fashioned charm is the focal point of the region. Dominating the village is the majestic icon Yellow Rock – known as Lizard Rock to the indigenous Wanaruah people - which keeps a watchful eye over the valley. Along the banks of the Brook heading west towards Milbrodale and Bulga is the more farming-oriented area of Fordwich.

HistoryThe region was first inhabited by the Wanaruah many thousands of years ago. These culturally and environmentally rich people left many significant cave paintings in the area, the most famous and accessible being the red ochre ‘Baiame’. European settlement first occurred in the early 1820’s when John Blaxland (of the early exploration family) was granted 8,000 acres of land upon which he built a grand sandstone home called Fordwich. Broke was officially named in 1830 by Major Thomas Mitchell after a colleague Sir Charles Broke-Vere. The settlement of Broke soon flourished, situated as it was on the convict trail north from Sydney. Numerous buildings from this early colonial area are still in use today – a leisurely stroll round the village street will reveal some treasures.

Broke Fordwich Wine RegionThe Hunter Valley is the oldest wine growing area in Australia with plantings dating back to the early 1820’s. The Broke Fordwich region now has a mixture of innovative new producers as well as original proud farming families. Early settlers needed to be self-sufficient, so grapes were grown along with fruit and vegetables, cattle pigs and poultry to feed the family and – in some cases – the convicts.

The unique character of the sub region was officially recognised in 2003 for its well drained sandy loam soil : ideal for the Hunter’s distinctive gift to the world of wine Semillon. River flat alluvial soil suits both Verdelho and Chardonnay, with the red volcanic soil more suited to Shiraz. The area boasts a unique and highly sought pocket of red (terra rossa) basalt on the Fordwich Sill.

In recent times the inventive and creative vignerons have developed a number of lesser known varieties that seem perfectly at home in Broke Fordwich: Barbera, Arneis, Touriga, Tempranillo, Fiano, Albarino, Graciano and Mourvedre many not be familiar to some visitors – but be sure to ask.

Traditionally, the region has been known as one of the ‘produce bowls’ of the Hunter, supplying much of its grapes to large Pokolbin based wine companies.

There are no large-scale wine producers in the Broke Fordwich area – all are distinctly boutique scale, family run businesses where you are quite likely to meet the viticulturist or winemaker standing behind the bar.

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH Our beautiful, brick built and historic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Broke was

opened in 1904 and has faithfully served the Broke Catholic community for 113 years.

Mass is celebrated on the second Sunday Vigil of the month at 6pm.

The church is also available for weddings,

funerals and other appropriate events.

ST ANDREW’S ANGLICAN CHURCH For nearly 130 years, built in 1889, this historic, sandstock brick church has been in constant

use. It is used for monthly church services, weddings and baptisms, with clergy attending

from Singleton. The appealing size, seating around 100 people, makes it also ideal for

intimate music events, and art exhibitions.

There is ample parking at the church with

Broke Fordwich Olives Along the banks of the Wollombi Brook between Paynes Crossing and Bulga are

many olives groves producing fine quality extra virgin and flavoured olive oils, table (eating) olives and tapenades.

The produce of the groves is widely available at the local store and at cellar doors throughout the area, especially at the monthly Community Market held on the

first Sunday of every month.

THE LEGEND OF COCKFIGHTER’S GHOST The colony of New South Wales was centred on the area of Sydney, including outlying settlements at Camden, Parramatta and Windsor. With the arrival of more settlers came to need to open more land, so Governor Macquarie instructed the John Howe of Windsor to try to find an overland route from the Hawkesbury to Hunter Rivers. Howe set off with a small party in late 1819 and found his way to the Hunter.

On his return journey his party tried to cross a flooded creek – present day Bulga – and their lead horse called Cockfighter perished in the attempted crossing. Years later convicts building a bridge across the river swore they saw the ghost of Cockfighter galloping across the fields.

There is one small flaw with the story – there is no historical record of the horse drowning. None of the records of John Howe or his party mention this incident.

Today this stretch of the Wollombi Brook is known locally as Cockfighter’s Creek.

THE LEGEND OF LIZARD ROCK Legend has it that during the Dreamtime, a giant lizard came into the Hunter from the coast, causing great destruction as it moved inland, ripping up forests and pushing up mountain ridges on its way. Seeing it was heading for the fine fertile lands around the Wanaruah country, a number of

warriors confronted the lizard at Broke. The Warriors managed to kill the lizard, and today its giant head and yellow face can be seen overlooking the village of Broke – known locally as Yellow Rock. Visit Mount Broke Wines on Adams Peak Road and have a look for yourself – the two front legs of the lizard are stretched out on front of the head, with the body and tail making up the ridges running towards Wollombi.
