Alex Dabonor Warri, Delta State, NigeriaMA Media, Culture and Identity

I decided to study in the UK because the quality of British education is globally recognised, and London is the perfect location for somebody studying Media, Culture and Identity.

I chose the University of Roehampton because I was looking for a course that places a strong emphasis on research.

When I arrived, I was pleased to find learning facilities that were of a high standard and very modern. More importantly, perhaps, I was greeted by friendly people and a welcoming environment. Staff and fellow students helped me to settle in, and I soon began to feel at home.

I travel into central London often, using the buses or the Underground. I like exploring historical landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and Parliament Square, and I enjoy going into the city on social outings.

The decision to study in the UK is one that you will never regret taking – I have had a fantastic experience!

Room to growFor many students, starting university means living away from home for the first time. The prospect of managing every detail of your day-to-day life can be both liberating and daunting – especially if you are new to the UK.

Most international students coming to Roehampton choose to stay in our on-campus accommodation. Living in halls affords you plenty of independence, while also giving you access to a close, supportive network of peers and university staff.

There is a wide variety of residences to choose from. Many rooms have en suite bathrooms and all have internet access. Check the website for more details of different halls and for virtual tours.

All international undergraduate or postgraduate students who apply before July 31st will be guaranteed on-campus accommodation.

Accommodation fees vary but are in the region of £96 to £124 per week (2012/13 prices). The cost includes utilities bills and contents insurance.

Living off campus is also an option. Some students prefer to be near to the University itself, while others like to live closer to central London with its many attractions. Whatever your preference, the Accommodation Office can help you to find the right place to live.

For more information, visit www.roehampton.ac.uk/International/Accommodation

On top of accommodation costs, students are advised to have approximately £600 per month for living expenses such as food, travel, books etc.

Studying in a major city in another country promised the best of all worlds – easy access to the rest of Europe, immersing myself in the London scene and furthering my education.

I was looking for a university with a defined campus, so Roehampton is ideal. I also chose it because I am able to play hockey competitively (one of my passions) and have access to some quite obscure sports, including trampolining, jujitsu, rowing, calypso drumming, billiards, the list goes on...

When I arrived, I found the people friendly and the campus as extensive as I had hoped. The University reps, as exhausted as they were from carrying our luggage across campus at midnight, were extremely helpful and answered everyone's touristy questions.

The international programme did a great job of making sure that we felt very welcome. We took trips into London, had detailed campus tours and orientation sessions, and attended dinners and welcome parties. I've joined three clubs already and I have a feeling I'll meet lots of people that way.

After Roehampton, I may decide to pursue a PhD in Counselling or some other aspect of Psychology, or try to coach at a higher level. First, however, I plan to travel around Europe, to round off a year of hard, focused work.

Mariia Bashkatova Samara, RussiaMSc International Management

My journey really began after I graduated from Samara State University of Economics, and I travelled to London to take an IELTS preparation course. To be honest, I think I got addicted to this city!

Roehampton wasn’t the only London university I applied to, but the support of the staff during enrolment, great feedback from alumni and students, and a population that isn’t too large – allowing for more personal communication with tutors and other members of staff – helped me to make up my mind.

When I arrived, I was impressed with the size of the campus. I remember thinking how lucky I was to be spending a year in such a beautiful place with a great history. Thanks to the meet and greet service, I immediately felt welcome. As soon as I arrived, I was provided with everything I needed to settle in – including essentials like food and an internet cable!

I really appreciate the University’s e-learning platform – we had no equivalent of this in Russia and I’m impressed with all the opportunities it provides to students. It’s not just about Moodle – the scale of the library, and how hi-tech it is, came as a pleasant surprise. It really encourages you to study and absorb new knowledge.

I would describe the Roehampton experience as amazing, challenging, creative, positive... but I haven’t slept much because I want to be everywhere, trying everything. If you have a chance to study in the UK, just do it.
