WelcomeWhat a Great BritainNow there is not many countries can boast that, whether we win gold medals or win the European Cup the record will be hard to beat. The Olympic torch has been through Bewdley and the crowds turned out in the hundreds to see this once in a lifetime event. Not the best organisation in the world, with the traffic fighting it’s way through the crowds, but to be fair no one expected to be this to be such an attraction so it probably caught the organisers by surprise. The television coverage of the Jubilee events, although hampered by the torrential rain, with the highlight being the boats on the river Thames. With the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh along with other members of the royal family stood for hours while the flotilla sailed by.The Royal barge looked resplendent being adorned in gold and red, but needed the bright sunlight to really do it justice in the gloom.

The Football ended in disappointment but the Tour de France ended with a triumph.

The Olympics has now started and we can only hope for our Olympians to do their best, but the organisation of security left a lot to be desiredWe can only hope the rain will stop!

Heavenly July Hopefully July will at last herald a spell of warm sunny weather, enabling many of us to enjoy our long awaited summer holidays. For the ancients, the arrival of the heat was also a dream they held most dear, although the reasons behind it were perhaps somewhat different.

To our Celtic ancestors the July new moon was known as the ‘Wort Moon’ and was the moon beneath which the sweet infusion of ground malt (wort) was combined with yeast to make beer. This was due to the fact that the warm weather provided just the right condi-tions for fermentation to take place.

This moon was also the time when our ances-tors noted the move-ment of the heavens and predictions regard-ing the future were made.

Our own skies are particularly active this month with two meteor showers to enjoy. The Delta Aquarids arrives on the 28 and 29 which will provide around twenty meteors per hour, whilst on the 29 and 30 the Capricornids will provide a slower, but potentially brighter show, often interspersed with fireballs. Both will be visible after mid-night in the east. Enjoy!

Fun in the gardenThroughout the year

www.yourlocaltimes.co.uk

Has anyone endured such torrential rainfall during what is meant to be the height of Summer. One thing is certain, we didn’t have to do much watering so the hosepipe ban came to nothing.

Pots and baskets have become waterlogged and most of the plants have struggled to survive. Not being able to get out in the garden,

unless you are a seasoned gardener who thrives in such weather, the weeds have started to take hold and the dead heading

of roses have taken a back seat.

Unless you have exceptional drainage under your lawn it will soon become waterlogged and a remedy may be to

take the fork and at intervals push in the tangs of the fork to try

and aerate the subsoil.

So with

everything on hold until the weather brightens, those with a shed could perhaps spend time servicing the mower or working in the green house.

It has not been a happy time for those who purchased Barbecues and patio furniture, but we look forward to when the rain stops and again enjoy the outdoor life once again.

The vegetable plot has also suffered with root crops being hampered by the water logged soil.Still we can look forward to perhaps a late Summer and the chore of weeding and getting the garden can get back on track.

Hang on... The suns out and the weather has picked up so its back on with the ritual of mowing and very soon watering. The cycle starts all over again. Well thats the weather for you

Jargon Busters – The Shape of Things (Part2)Welcome to the latest edition of “Your Lo-cal Times”, a magazine that has grown in quality, presentation and distribution in its four short years, I’m sure you’ll agree. For those of you who enjoy this publica-tion and feel that it contributes positively to our community, please show your ap-preciation in whatever way you can (and I don’t necessarily mean financially !!) to Bob Cooper, the Editor-In-Chief. Thanks Bob, for ALL your hard work and finan-cial input.....Don’t give up.

The above paragraph leads quite nicely into the second part of my 2-part feature on those people who have contributed significantly into the World we know and love, especially the advancement of technology, the bringing together of countries, societies and individuals and the creation of jobs and wealth for millions. Sometimes, we take people and things for granted as we rush around in our hectic non-stop lives, so for the next few minutes at least, spare a thought for the four pio-neers I have chosen to spotlight this month (five including Bob !!!)

Bill Gates – Claim to fame = Creator of Microsoft. Born October 1955, said to be the wealthiest man in America, if not the World, with a personal fortune in excess of 60 Billion dollars, I think it’s safe to say Mr Gates is very successful in what he does !!! Whether you love or loathe the Windows operating system, without it, I severely doubt the internet and the im-pact it’s had on all our lives, would have existed, particularly in the form we know

and love it today. It became obvious quite early on in Gates’ education that he had a leaning toward computers and at age 13, sponsored by funds raised by the Mother’s Club of his School from a “Rummage Sale”, he was allowed access to a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal, a very early com-puter, where he developed his program-ming skills. A few years later, he and three friends were banned from using machines at Computer Center Corporation because they were found exploiting bugs in their operating system that gave them unlimited computer time !! Once the ban was lifted, they were took on by the same company to ferret out further imperfections in ex-change for computer access. During this time, his friendship with Paul Allen grew and they eventually joined forces to create their own business and thus in 1975, they formed “Micro-Soft”. The hyphen was eventually dropped and history, as they say, speaks for itself...

Steve Jobs – Claim to fame = Creator of Apple. Born February 1955, Steve sadly passed away October 2011 from Pancre-atic Cancer. Much like Bill Gates, Steve was a visionary, a pioneer and a master of innovation. Probably as influential, if not more so, than Gates, but unlike Gates, Jobs was driven more by the hardware, the electronics rather than the software. Adopted at birth, his new Dad worked for a company that manufactured lasers and it was from his influence that Jobs became obsessed with electronics. While working for Atari, he worked on the circuit board

Page 21: Your Local Times

www.yourlocaltimes.co.ukoury

Local Times 21

for a video game called “Breakout” which some of you may remember. In 1971 he met Steve Wozniak, Jobs was 16 at the time, Wozniak, 21- together they made the first “Apple” computer. An absolute perfectionist in all his pursuits, Apple went hyper after the release of the Ipod in 2001, followed in rapid succession by the Iphone and Ipad. Not as wealthy as Gates, but with an estimated personal fortune of around 8 billion dollars at the time of his death, he didn’t do too bad !!!

Richard Branson – Claim to fame = Creator of the Virgin group. The 4th rich-est man in the UK, born in 1950, Bran-son started out at the age of 16 when he created a magazine called “The Student”, where he advertised popular records. This was followed in 1970 when he set up a mail order business selling audio records,

in 1971 he opened his first “Virgin” record store in Oxford Street in London. Multiple stores followed and in subsequent years, Virgin Airways and Virgin Mobile, in fact I think it’s safe to say, Branson’s dabbled in many areas. He now plans to build an orbital space launch system called “LauncherOne”, at which point, the Virgin legacy will truly go stellar.

Pierre Omidyar – Claim to fame = Crea-tor of Ebay. Born in June 1967, Pierre may be the youngest of this month’s entrepre-neurs, but it hasn’t stopped him accruing a personal fortune in excess of 7 billion dol-lars. Launched in September 1995, Ebay has since grown to be the World’s biggest car boot sale !!! In 1997, it was rumoured that the site was originally created so Pierre’s wife could trade her collection of “Pez” dispensers, but it transpires this was a marketing ploy to attract the media !! The site was originally meant to be called “echobay”, but when it was discovered that this name had already been used, it was simply shortened to ebay and the rest of the success story speaks for itself.

So there you have it, a whirlwind look at eight amazing individuals, hope it in-spires you to look further.Until next time... Steve Gould ([email protected])

The UK’s premier classical picnic proms with Spitfire, cannons, cav-alry and fireworks!

A perfect summer celebration at the Ragley Hall Battle Proms Open-Air Concert

On Saturday 18 August, thousands of people are expected to pack up the pic-nic hampers and the champers and come together for the second annual Battle Proms picnic and firework concert at Ragley Hall. An unrivalled blend of musi-cal talent, expert displays, spectacular pyrotechnics and a celebratory atmosphere makes the Battle Proms a truly memorable occasion!

This event came back last year to Ragley Hall after a 10 year break, and received an incredibly warm reception from thousands of locals who were thrilled to see the re-turn of the Battle Proms.

As in 2011, there will be a full two hour programme of exquisite classical music performed by the renowned New English Concert Orchestra, plus of course all of the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ favourites performed by Channel 4’s winning so-prano Denise Leigh. Audiences will also be treated to a tear-jerking aerial display from a WWII Spitfire, over 200 live can-nons, mounted Napoleonic skill-at-arms

displays and breathtaking fireworks to music. The electric atmosphere is infectious, and as well as an enthusiastic following of regulars, each year many new visitors are learning the magic of a summer evening at the Battle Proms. With tickets already selling fast, the organisers are expecting another fabulous turnout in 2012.At the Battle Proms you can immerse your senses. Experience the explosive colour, sparkle and spectacle of the cannon fire and the dancing fireworks lighting up the sky above a roaring crowd. It’s the pop and fizz of champagne, the thunder of hooves, the ground-shaking gun fire, the unmistakeable rumble of the Spitfire en-gine, the scent of the gunpowder, and the sublime music on a warm evening breeze.

In this special year of the Diamond Jubi-lee of Queen Elizabeth II and the London Olympics, the Battle Proms offer a won-derful way to enjoy the best of British and join in with the flag-waving spirit that will soon be gripping the whole nation. Two hundred years after Napoleon’s famous retreat from Moscow, this is also the year to experience Tchaikovsky’s celebrated 1812 Overture with the full thunderous complement of live cannon fire and fire-works – unforgettable!

“If you’ve never been to an open-air concert before, 2012 is the year to give it a go,” says concert organiser Adam Slough, “we’re really excited about this year’s programme, and link-ing up with the wider national celebrations.” Over the last 15 years the organisers of the Battle Proms have developed what is now one of the most distinct and comprehensive concert programmes in the UK; this is an exceptional evening not to be missed.

For more information and to book tickets visit the website at www.battleproms.com or call 01432 355 416 . You can also purchase tick-ets locally from selected Tourist Information Centres.

Local SpeakingAfter DinnerA friend due to make her first speech at a black tie dinner for business-men and women asked for a few tips. Here’s a summary of what I said.

After a good dinner and several glasses of wine, the audience may not be at its most attentive, so a powerful opening line to grab their attention is a good idea. An interrogative question can work well, although there’s always a risk that someone may choose to an-swer, so care needed in framing the question.A speech or presentation is served well by having a good structure: Churchill’s “Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you’ve told them”. Put another way, news headlines, news, news summary. People tend to be wary of the unex-pected, so clear indication of purpose early on will help them relax and they will also be more likely to understand what you are telling them if they know where you are going. An after dinner audience likes to be entertained. However, do not attempt to tell jokes. Subtle humour will be far more effective and ‘safer’ if they don’t respond. A change in voice tone or a brief pause at a key moment can cause a ripple of mirth. If just one person re-acts, you can always throw in the ‘I’m

glad someone is still awake’ or words to that effect. It can act as an icebreaker.Don’t speak too quickly, especially if you are us-ing a microphone. Within reason, the slower you speak, the easier it is for the audience to understand what you are saying – think about what it’s like listening to a foreign language. And pause for effect and to allow them to take in the significance of what you’ve said, whether that’s after a serious point or when you’ve said something that is intended to be amusing. Changes of pace will inject life into the speech, as will changes in volume at appropriate times. And repetition of key words can help with emphasis. Notes get in the way of developing rapport with the audience – you want to keep eye contact as much as pos-sible. The fewer notes the better. None is best but a bit risky. Always worth chatting to as many audience members as possible before the start. That way you have some established ‘friends’ in the audience who may give you a smile or nod when your eyes alight (briefly) on theirs. However, too much nodding may suggest the wine has got the better of them!

Page 25: Your Local Times

www.yourlocaltimes.co.ukoury

Local Times 25

As you draw to the close, summarise key points. You should never need to say ‘in conclusion’. Your ‘voice music’ should lead the audience to understand that you are coming to the end. Your final sentence should be the equivalent of the orchestral clash of cymbals and thunder-ous climax. It should leave the audience in no doubt that you are finished with-out the need to say feebly ‘thank you for listening’. You should not thank the audience. Rather, the reverse is true. All they need is the signal that it is time to applaud.

Many people have come up with great ideas. Take the Black & Decker workmate. It made its inventor millions and is now copied around the globe. The windup radio. Who would have thought that it would now be in every country in the world and making Trevor Baylis a household name and incredibly rich. Told his invention would not work by fellow engineers he has had the satisfaction of proving them wrong. Perhaps you want to write a book and become the next J.K. Rowing. They say we all have a book inside us so why not try it.

So how do you get started once you have come up with your idea?

Well let me start by saying “that it is not going to be easy.” For those who think that it is, read no farther. For the remaining readers it will possibly mean working long hours, going without having a holiday, changing the car, going out and spending money with friends and discussing the idea with your family and “friends who are forced to listen” until they talk you out of it.

So now you have been talked out of it, no good reading any farther, go and make a cup of tea, which is what happens when we lose focus and dream of an easier life, so this probably leaves just a few of us reading this and thinking, “why the hell should I bother.”

I have spoken about Richard Branson and Felix Denis and bet not one person has read the books. You can read them on-line, skipping the boring bits, so you do not have to go to the library or to Waterstone’s. They give a great insight to the mentality of an entrepreneur and the pain they had to endure before having success. A book about their life that has made more money for them.

We all dream of being rich, or at least comfortable, but starting your own business and once up and running gives you something that working for an employer doesn’t give you. Freedom. Time to plan your life and time to do what you enjoy doing. Being with the family and having more than one holiday a year. Sending your children to university without them graduating with debt. Able to pay a deposit on their first house and saving for your old age.So why aren’t we all self employed and have our own business?

Human nature predicts that if we are satisfied with our job, the nine till five daily grind, the commute to work, and the certainty of a regular salary every month, then why change? Some follow the dream, that desire to be successful, the chance to do something you have always wanted to do.

Not all succeed but at least they have had a go. Start in a recession and as Chris Dawson, founder of The Range, says “The recession is tough for everyone, including us, the difference is, I’ve always run my businesses as though we are in recession. People ought to take heed and do the same.”

DINNER DATE DANCES/FRIENDS EVENTS GROUP 40 PLUS 50 plus and 60 plus for polite single people.THE ANTIDOTE TO THE RECESSION!!

MY STORY, by Paula Holloway aged 58

After I nearly died from undiagnosed kidney failure due to an unknown allergy to antibiotics penicillin I decided life should be ENJOYED not ENDURED. The awful illness was a terrible shock to me and my kidneys are still only functioning 25 per cent each. The nephrologist said they would never re-cover and would fail at some time in my future.

However, after hearing that - my philosophy now is that none of us know how long we have got on planet earth and it is best to be happy one day at a time because tomorrow may never arrive for us Laughter is very healing so I decided to organiseFun happy events for people locally.

During my long illness I therefore decided to start up a “Friends” group which I did in October for widowed, divorced single people of age 40 plus, 50 plus and 60 plus.

I organised drinks evening for them Sunday lunches, (Sundays is an awfully long day for single people on their own) plus days out, theatre, shows etc,

My Friends group quickly grew and people even came out of their houses in the cold, icy , snowy dark winter nights to meet as a group.

I charged a very small joining fee just to pay for advertising. I still do. My telephone bill is hor-rendous!!!

Each had their awful story to tell possibly bereave-ment, divorce or relationship break up or lost careers. Most were quite traumatised. It is easy for people to fall into depression in that state think-ing often wrongly life will never improve even suicidal. My other occupation is helping therapy patients in my 15 year career as a therapist. So I am used to trying to mend broken people!!!!

Anyway everyone is sick of the awful gloomy recession and bad news on tv, every day or in the papers and also I think local people certainly do not want to travel to the cities with the high cost of petrol so I thought up DINNER DATES, and dancing and Paula’s parties which was a natural progression from my Friends group and combined the two.

I organise once a month a lovely evening dinner date in a local hotel The Gainsborough which otherwise would have been a quiet evening for them and people can meet either to make new friends or find a new partner – no pressure just fun relaxed evenings very civilised. Each dinner I give a special theme, last month was a James |Bond Evening, this month is a Celebrity or Scruff evening where they can ei-ther dress to look like a celebrity and win an oscar or stay a scruff, be themselves and watch the fun.

The next one will be a masked ball party games and prizes for the best mask The one after that will be a comedy murder mysery. The food is lovely either a 2 course or3 course meal can be chosen with a choice.

I feel proud when I look down the long table at the evening meal and see two long lines of happy smil-ing people talking to each other their eyes glisten-ing in the candlelight brought together because of me…..

Everyone brings something of themselves of interest to the group. We all have our gifts, mine is creativity and organising events

Where else can people meet new single people for 52 weeks. If they go to a pub most people are married.

It is very hard work but I enjoy it if I am appreci-ated.

Ladies particularly are grateful to me because it is still a mans world, men can go to the pub on their own ladies feel they cant.

I only want nice happy positive people in the club therefore I initially meet everyone before they join and explain everything. One lady has already met her tall handsome JAMES BOND so it is best to be POSITIVE and PATIENT and not ageist and negative……

SUMMER NIGHTS FOR SAFARI PARKThe best thing about summer is that during the whole of August West Midland Safari Park is open even longer for their Summer Nights event. With the gates opening at 10.00am, last admission at 7.00pm and the Park closing at 9.00pm there is no better time than during the summer holidays to pay this local award winning attraction a visit.

There’s over 1700 animal encounters all set in the 200 acre site – so however you plan to enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer why not take advantage of the extended admission times and even some late night rides?

Fancy exploring the four-mile safari? Seeing lions, tigers, elephants, rhino, giraffe and lots, lots more? Did you know that you could even feed some of the animals? Special diet animal food is available to buy when you arrive.

What about a trip into the Discovery Trail to see Penguin Cove?

The colony of Humboldt Penguins has settled down well in their new home and there are some great viewing opportunities. You can visit Twilight Cave to see the free flying bats and perhaps call in at Creepy Crawlies

to encounter those creatures that even prefer to come out late at night. Seaquarium is home to a variety of marine creatures from around the shores, whilst Mark O’Shea’s Reptile World is alive with all kinds of snakes

and reptiles. There are Sea Lion shows performed throughout the day and evening in the Sea Lion Theatre and a whole new world waiting to be discovered in the African Village that comes complete with village ‘huts’ and a home that allows visitors to peek behind the scenes to catch a glimpse of what life could be like in a real African Village. There are also plenty of friendly animal encounters that include the opportunity to feed some of the Somali Sheep, Pygmy Goats and Cameroon Sheep.

Just one of the testomonials we have received lately sums up the success of the business. After a luxurious wedding reception held at the Chateu Impney last month where the Candy Carousel was the star attraction, praise was indeed forthcoming. The hosts supplied the chocolates and we supplied the Fero Rocher Cone for the centre which was a real guest pleaser.

Having been approached by a number of event planners and venues, we have now started to manufacture the unit to order,

but will still limit the number of units we propose to supply to each area. Being an alternative to the once popular chocolate fountain, Candy Carousel is a multi functional unit which you can use to display your wedding cake, use to display your favours, as well as the Pick & Mix selection. The unit can be hired without or without the confectionary on a daily basis and we deliver it to the venue and set it up ready for your guests to enjoy. The addition of the revolving cake stand, which fits into the centre of the unit, can be used for the very popular cup cakes, which we freshly bake, decorate and sup-ply if required.

At our latest corporate catering event, the client used the Candy Carousel with the revolving stand for the Canapes, instead of the traditional tables due to the minimal space it takes up, fitting neatly into a cor-ner of the function room. The clear panel at the front had the clients logo promoting the event.

If you like more details how you can purchase or hire the unit please call 01299 402094 or 07736540136.

Putting in the effort has reaped rewards

TestomonialIf you are thinking of having something a bit different for a wedding, then look no further than having a Candy Carousel.

Val & Bob arranged their Carousel at our daughters wedding and it was a real success. We decided to not to have the sweets but had chocolates instead. Val arranged a cone of Fero Rocher in the centre and it looked spectacular. We would definitely recommend Candy Carousel to any one thinking of having a wedding or similar event, our guests loved it and it was a real talking point.
