In Service: 1946 – early 80s, several preserved examples.

Primary Assignments:Road freight and passengerservice.

Introduced in 1946, the F3was the perfect diesel for railroads ready to replaceaging steam power. Packing1500 horsepower, F3s couldbe set up in combinations ofA and B units (some roadsopted for A-A sets) for freightor passenger service, wherethey performed equally well.Replaced by the more powerful F7 in February 1949,F3s remained in service intothe 1980s, when their advancing age made themprime candidates for trade-inson newer, more powerful hood units.

America’s railroads greeted1946 with enthusiasm asindustry suppliers beganconverting back topeacetime production. The Depression and theincredible demands of WWIIhad left lines large andsmall badly in need of newequipment of every kind.

The Trains of TomorrowAlthough no new passengercars were built during thewar and service suffered,the nation’s railroadspromised travelers betterdays. Magazines were filledwith ads showcasingsketches of all-new diesel-powered streamlinersequipped with everyimaginable comfort.

Following the end ofhostilities, the railroadswere ready and waiting to

place their orders – NewYork Central alone ordered420 new passenger cars inDecember of 1945 — andthe floodgates swung open.

Power for the Future While steam was still aliveand well, the proveneconomy and efficiency ofdiesels put them high onnearly every railroad’s list ofmust-have new equipment.

Well aware of the impendingflood of demand, EMD wasready with a new version ofits E series passenger units.Once raw materials could beallocated in early 1945, thenew E7 made its debut.These 2000 horsepowerunits featured a pair of567A prime movers, housedin a restyled body with asharper bulldog nose likethat found on the FT.

And as the only firm allowedto build cab units during thewar, EMD entered thesummer of 1946 with a hugehead start for its new F3. A more powerful version ofthe successful FT introducedin 1939 for freight service,the new models could becustomized for freight orpassenger work.

Alco, Baldwin and Lima alsopromised new diesel power,and newcomer Fairbanks-Morse entered the fray withH10-44 switchers and Erie-Built cab units.

Something Old, Something NewMaking the transition topeacetime proved adaunting task. It took timeto convert facilities andongoing materials shortagesfurther slowed thetransition. The tidal wave

of orders overwhelmedbuilders, and led to longerand longer delivery delays.

As weeks stretched intomonths, railroads tookmatters into their ownhands. Older streamlinedcars were sent through thecompany shops, refitted,rebuilt and painted tomatch new cars on order.

Where more equipment was needed now, olderheavyweight cars were givensimilar facelifts and freshpaint — some roads evenadded black “shadow lines”on silver-painted cars toresemble the flutedstainless steel of the newlightweight cars!

schemes became standardon all new equipment. Theseschemes gave the owner aunique identity, and manymade approaching trainsmore visible, improvingemployee and public safety.

Introduced in 1975 as a replacement

for aging GP7s and GP9s, the

GP15-1 was better suited to the

bigger cars entering service, while

the low nose improved forward

visibility. EMD required customers

to provide a trade-in unit, which

supplied traction motors, trucks

and main generators, reducing the

price. GP15-1s looked like 35 Series

engines, but had a single 48" fan

and “tunnel motor” air intake. Later

versions included the GP15-1AC

with an alternator and the GP15T, a

turbocharged AC model. Nearly 370

were built between 1976 and 1983,

and many are still going strong.

By late 1954, Union Pacific wasunhappy with how long-time partnerChicago & North Western handled UPpassenger trains between Omaha andChicago. Work to find a new routebegan, and on September 20, 1955,Milwaukee Road president John P.Kiley announced that they wouldhandle UP’s trains, including theflagship City of Los Angeles, startingOctober 30.

UP required cars in the Cities pool towear Armour Yellow and Harbor MistGray. Milwaukee planned to paintnearly 40 cars for the five trains, butquickly found the UP scheme lessexpensive to apply and more durablethan its own.
