BEING PREPARED FOR POWER OUTAGES
Following are some tips for planning ahead for a power outage:• Have an emergency charging option for your mobile devices. If you use
your car to re-charge devices, do NOT keep the car running in a garage, or partially enclosed space, this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it.
• Purchase ice or freeze water-filled plastic containers to help keep food cold during a temporary power outage.
• Only use flashlights (LED bulbs provide the best light and longest life) for emergency lighting - candles can cause fires.
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours.
• Only use portable generators away from your home, NEVER run inside a home or garage, or connect it to your home’s electrical system.
• If you rely on anything that is battery-operated or power dependent like a medical device, you should determine a back-up plan.

Food StorageBUCKETS
After a natural disaster, food sources can become scarce. Be prepared with bulk dry goods such as beans, rice, and grains. We have 25 pound bags of most common beans available in-store. Also, we can order many other organic
items and canned foods through our Buyer’s Club. Come in and ask a grocery clerk for further information. How long can you store dry foods? Beans and white rices, if kept cool and dry, can be stored for nearly an
indefinite period of time. Brown rices are only good for up to 6 months. Rolled oats can be stored for 18 to 24 months. It is important to keep your stored foods away from heat, freezing, moisture, and pests.

Pet Preparedness
Peninsula Daily news/sequim Gazette PENINSULA EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS GUIDE | FEBRUARY 2018 27
HERE AT FREDS our main focus is to better our community by helping you become prepared. We previously owned a prepping business called West Coast Preppers, where we helped supply local government and re departments with emergency supplies. We specialize in many emergency supplies, such as: Firearms, Water Filters, Long-Term Food
Storage, and Tactical Gear.
THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA is an isolated region and if a major emergency were to take place, aid would be limited or absent for 30-60 days (FEMA). This is why it is important as a community to not only have the supplies needed to thrive, but to know how to use these supplies and to be able to work together. That is why it is one of FREDS missions to supply and educate.
WE BELIEVE THAT safety and knowledge are essential to surviving any emergency, natural or man made. FREDS Challenge: In your mind right now make a mental check list. If the power was out for an extended amount of time and no one was coming to help, could you take care of yourself and your family? There are many people who are not prepared and who are ready to take what they need, this is when the protection part of preparing comes into play. I do not want to see our community come to this, and that is why I want to see everyone put some thought into being prepared.
WHETHER IT BE war against the elements or humanity, be prepared. And it starts with a state of mind and spirit. Our motto at FREDS is to Protect and Provide. Take action and join us in making our community one that can thrive.
