“One hundred years on from his date with King George V at Bertangles, the values and attributes of our greatest Old Boy, General Sir John Monash, continue to be those that underpin a Scotch education: a belief in enterprise, service and self-responsibility; an appreciation of how the world came to be as it is and confidence in those principles that will make it better; a commitment to hard work and embracing challenge with fortitude, rigour and purpose. Page 2: YOUR PAYMENT GENERAL SIR JOHN MONASH SUPPORT … Sir John Mona… · GENERAL SIR JOHN MONASH GCMG KCB VD (SC 1877-1881)… “As the years roll on, my regard for the Old School and

‘In the 1920s, Monash was broadly accepted, not just in Victoria, as the greatest living Australian. His commanding intellect was sensed, as well as his basic honesty and decency. He was one tall poppy who was never cut down. No one in Australia’s

history perhaps crammed more effective work into a life.’

Dr Geoffrey Serle (’40), Victorian Rhodes Scholar (1947), Australian Dictionary of Biography (1986)

Post-war, under his leadership as the first General Manager, and then Chairman, of the State Electricity Commission, Monash oversaw the expansion of the entire power grid across Victoria. He was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne, one of the principal organisers of the annual observance of Anzac Day, and was instrumental in determining the design of the Shrine of Remembrance. Later, he would become Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

It is Monash University, though, which is named for him, acknowledging Monash as a man who ‘contributed to almost every level of Australian life’, and ‘who used education to turn his natural talent into ability, allowing him to realise his daring ambitions’.

Monash died in October 1931, with an estimated 300,000 mourners attending the state funeral held in his honour. For all the accolades, titles and recognition, in a final sign of humility, he instructed that his tombstone simply read ‘John Monash’.

Monash’s spirit lives on strongly at Scotch, as a scholar, philanthropist, man of vision and enterprise.

By establishing an academic scholarship bearing Sir John Monash’s name - one which will enable talented boys to be, in turn, inspired by the spirit, service and legacy of Monash - Scotch salutes this finest of Old Boys.

A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS…

Born 27 June 1865 to Prussian migrants in West Melbourne, John Monash arrived as a pupil at Scotch in 1877. A student of remarkable ability who overcame cultural challenges and adversity, Monash’s relationship with, and affection for, Scotch was to continue throughout his life. In his final year of school, aged 16, he was Dux in both Mathematics and - highly proficient in German, French and Hebrew - also modern languages. He graduated in 1881 as equal Dux of the School.

Monash completed his Bachelor of Civil Engineering at the University of Melbourne in 1891. He then undertook a Master of Engineering (1893), Bachelors of Arts and Law (1895) and was later awarded a Doctor of Engineering in 1921. An accomplished pianist, fine exponent of chess and debating, with a keen interest in politics, Monash co-founded the Melbourne University Union. In time, he would also receive honorary degrees from Oxford and Cambridge.

Prior to World War I, Monash worked as an engineer of note, renowned for his innovative use and manufacture of reinforced concrete.

Monash’s outstanding leadership, creative originality and personal magnetism as commander of the entire Australian Corps in World War I challenged military thinking of the time. His capacity to identify problems, find practical solutions, and get the best out of people was exceptional.

The General Sir John Monash Scholarship seeks to honour the life, service and achievements of one of Scotch’s most revered alumni, and do justice to the very qualities he represented throughout his life.

At the heart of it all, Sir John Monash was a passionate believer in the power of education, such as he had experienced at Scotch. This scholarship - which will benefit generations of Scotch boys - recognises his belief and commitment to education.

Scotch is seeking to raise an initial capital fund of $750,000 to endow in perpetuity one full academic scholarship, to enable a boy whose family would otherwise not have the resources, to attend Scotch.

All donations to the Scotch College Scholarship Fund are tax deductible.

One hundred years after he led the Australian Corps to decisive victories in 1918, Sir John Monash’s old School, Scotch College – which he always loved and respected for the excellent education it gave him – has commissioned a scholarship bearing his distinguished name, and honouring the man who shaped the course of Australian history as no other. He is one of our finest Old Scotch Collegians. While palpable reminders of Monash abound at Scotch: among them, Monash Drive, Monash House, the foundation stone of Memorial Hall, and the Monash Gates through which Scotch boys pass every schoolday, there is perhaps no more fitting tribute to a man who is so closely entwined with Scotch’s story and values than to commemorate his achievements, humanity and sheer brilliance through the General Sir John Monash Scholarship.

A man of rare genius, equal Dux of Scotch College (1881), President of the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association (1927), General Officer commanding the Australian Imperial Forces in France (1918), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne (1923-1931), Chairman of the State Electricity Commission (1921-1931), recipient of the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB)(1917), and the first man to be knighted in the field of battle by a reigning monarch in nearly 200 years (1918) - in this instance, King George V - also awarded France’s Legion d’Honneur, the Croix de Guerre and the Order of La Couronne (Belgium), the United States’ Distinguished Service Medal (1919), Sir John Monash’s curriculum vitae is without peer in Australian history.

While widely regarded as one of history’s greatest and most inspiring leaders and strategists in times of war, in reality Monash deplored the loss of precious life and waste of human effort that war wrought, and so it was in peacetime, that he was also able to bring his formidable intellect, talents, expertise and ingenuity to solving challenges facing the 20th century, for which he is widely acclaimed.
