STEWARDSHIP OF OUR TREASURE
Gree ngs and peace be with you all. I’m Fr. Chris Barkhausen and I’m very happy to be here at St. Francis de Sales. I look forward to having the me and opportunity to meet all of you, however I hope this short bio helps begin the process of ge ng to know each other. I was born and raised in Roxbury, NJ and a ended Pope John XXIII High School in Sparta, NJ. I a ended St. An-drew’s College Seminary at Seton Hall University for my under graduate and St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA for my major seminary. I was ordained in 2014 and served for three years at St. Patrick’s in Chatham, NJ. This past year I was the chaplain and a theology teacher at DePaul Catholic high school in Wayne, NJ. In addi on to my pastoral assignments I also serve as the Diocesan Boy Scout Chaplain, as a member of the Voca ons Board, and the Priestly Spiritual Life Commi ee. I recognize the leaving of a pastor can be a difficult
me. We grow a ached to our priests as they minister to us and as we share our lives with them. The church has historically been compared with a ship and I believe that same simile can apply to individual parishes. Fr. Boland set the ship to sea almost 40 years ago and Fr. Brian con nued to chart the course toward our heaven-ly des na on. I look forward now to taking up the helm from Fr. Brian. No one however works alone, between the parish staff, many volunteers, and all of the parish-ioners; we all have a role in not only keeping the ship afloat but moving in the right direc on. While change can bring uneasiness, the most important elements of St. Francis de Sales remain the same. Christ is our North Star who leads our way and the Holy Spirit fills our sails and moves us toward our des na on: our heavenly homeland with God our loving Father. Please know of my prayers for all of you and I ask that you please keep me in your prayers as well as I begin my ministry here at St. Francis de Sales. God Bless! Fr. Chris St. Francis de Sales - Pray for us!

Prayers for the Sick and Dying
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the best means of assisting the dying. Jesus revealed the power of this prayer to St. Faustina. The Lord gave many promises regarding recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the sick and/or dying. There are parishioners who regularly pray the chaplet. We have a prayer chain and are accepting prayer requests. If you are interested in joining the prayer chain, please con-tact Bea Harrigan at (973) 827-0083. If you have a special prayer request for a loved one who is sick and/or dying, you may call Bea Harrigan, Cheryl Avery at (973) 702-1342, or Denise Drogo at (973) 875-6863.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battle-field,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary con-ditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the fami-ly. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their brav-ery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public every-where in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of wa-ter to the thirsty.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scrip-ture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obs nate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his na ve place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too some mes encounter obstacles as we trav-el along the journey of faith. So o en we experi-ence weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made per-fect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
