It is the siteof Australia’s Parliament House, High Court,and supporting agencies, and it boasts nu-merous national cultural and social institu-tions, which include a museum, zoo, gallery,archives and war memorial. Located in theAustralian Capital Territory and situated be-tween Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra isan ideal place to undertake an internship.

You'll spend four days per week, for elevenweeks, at your internship site and beenrolled in a semester-long course that willintroduce you to Australian politics andpublic policy. One of the most attractivefeatures is that you will be participating inthe program with students from all overAustralia, as well as with other American andinternational students. semester internshipsPicture yourself working in Sydney, one of the world’s most exciting, internationaldestinations. Placements are available in abroad range of areas, including business, socialsciences, humanities, and the visual, fine,graphic arts. Throughout your internship, afaculty sponsor and workplace supervisor willbe available to ensure that you are meetingyour professional and academic objectives. The Alliance for Global Education is a partnershipof the Arcadia University Center for EducationAbroad and the Institute for Study Abroad, ButlerUniversity, formed with the vision of opening non-traditional destinations to an ever-growing andmore diverse U.S. undergraduate population.

Gain practical work experience in China for asemester or summer! A limited number of internships are available to students studyingon Alliance programs at Beijing Language andCulture University (BLCU) and Shanghai Uni-versity of Finance and Economics (SUFE). Ap-plicants should have taken at least threesemesters of college-level Chinese language, orthe equivalent, prior to application, and everyeffort is made to match a placement with thestudent’s interest. Past placements have in-cluded positions in government-sponsored,non-profit, and private firms in the areas ofeconomics, travel, market research, public re-lations, technology, and even art history.

The internship is worth three credits and, forsemester students, will replace one of thearea studies or business courses that Alliancestudents usually take at BLCU or SUFE. Othercourses that are offered during the fall orspring include:

SUFE: Chinese language (six credits); China:Economic Giant (three credits); and elec-tives in the areas of marketing, finance,or management (three credits each).

BLCU: Chinese language (six credits); Issuesin Contemporary Chinese Society andCulture (three credits) and electives in theareas of film, economics, or environmen-tal studies (three credits each).

For summer students, the BLCU or SUFE cur-riculum consists of five credits of Chinese lan-guage and the three-credit internship.

Faculty members will supervise all academicwork, which will include a research project inEnglish by each student.

housingBeijing program students live in double roomswith other Alliance students in a new, foreign-student, residence hall on campus. Rooms areclean and comfortable with private bath-rooms and are wired for high-speed internet.

Shanghai students are housed in the Interna-tional Student Dorm on the university’sdowntown campus. Each Alliance studentwill live in comfortable double rooms with aChinese roommate.

You willjoin in the workday routine of other London-ers and, in the process, gain valuable insightsand skills that will continue to resonate longafter your program is completed.

Arcadia’s London intern programs offer anexceptional and exhilarating chance for per-sonal, professional, and intellectual growth.Experienced intern program managers findplacements to fit each student’s specific aca-demic and professional objectives. The em-ployers and organizations that Arcadia workswith are eager to provide students with asubstantial and meaningful experience.

Whether you want to gain financial experi-ence in a commodities brokerage, work in anauction house or at an advertising agency, ex-plore non-profit management or assist aBritish MP in the Houses of Parliament, ourinternships are much more than mere obser-vation or administrative assistance. Arcadiastudents work on substantive, meaningfulprojects and get to appreciate and recognizethe results of their work.

Your internship will be complemented by ac-ademic courses designed to expand upon andreinforce your professional and academic in-terests, while providing a cultural context foryour experience in the workplace. Thesestudies will balance your program, and theyinclude two core courses:

• Working in the UK and the EuropeanUnion: the Politics, Sociology, and PublicPolicy of Business and the Professions isthe keystone course of the program. You’llexplore issues related to British and Euro-pean culture, politics, business, and society,to help you reflect upon and enrich yourinternship experience.

• In the Work in Thought and Actioncourse, students meet with an academic in-ternship advisor to discuss and develop theacademic project that they will complete –typically a research paper, creative presen-tation, or portfolio – related to their in-ternship.

London Semester Internship

During the 15-week, semester program, studentsintern three days per week for 12 weeks. Theprogram offers a wide range of internship place-ments within the art world, charitable organiza-tions, media and production companies,healthcare establishments, government offices,and large corporate enterprises. Our experiencedinternship managers expect students to partici-pate in projects that require resourcefulness, re-sponsibility, and a mature work ethic.

Semester interns take the program’s two corecourses as well as two additional courses. Forthese latter elective courses, they can choosefrom either Arcadia University’s London Nowprogram courses (which take advantage of Lon-don’s rich resources and provide compelling in-sights into British history and culture), or they canselect courses from the variety available at CityUniversity or London College of Fashion.(Courses are worth three to four credits each.)

London Parliamentary InternshipFor students interested in the workings ofdemocratic government, the special advan-tages of a parliamentary system, and the waythat legislative processes takes place – and forthose who would enjoy an inner look at theBritish Parliament – the London Internshipprovides a unique and challenging experi-ence. This internship goes beyond the tasksthat student workers are normally given. Par-ticipants often work alongside a British Mem-ber of Parliament, conduct research, planevents, or assist with logistics.

Explore your career goals in Pune! Withplacements at some of the most forward-thinking and well-respected NGOs, as well asmulti-national businesses, IT companies,research institutes and think thanks, this uniqueinternship opportunity may be just thechallenge you’ve been looking for.

All students participating in the Allianceprogram in Pune, commencing in spring 2009,will complete either a research project or aninternship concentrating on contemporaryIndia. Areas of focus can range from socialjustice, development economics,environmental issues, and public health tobusiness and information technology, to film,journalism, and the performing arts! Studentswishing to opt for the internship shouldindicate their interests to the Alliance staffearly in the application stage, so a suitableplacement can be arranged.

Internships and directed research projects areconducted under close academic supervisionand require a faculty-approved reading list,weekly meetings, and final paper or project.The internship experience is worth six creditsduring the semester, and four credits duringthe summer term. It is supported byinstruction in research methods andconversational Marathi during the courseworkperiod. The required semester course,Contemporary India (three credits), is apolitical, social, and historical survey of post-independence India, providing context for theoverall program experience for both semesterand summer students. The remaining sixcredits for semester students are chosen fromelectives, worth three credits each, in social

justice, environmental issues, public health,film, development economics, and Hindi.

housingAs this program is entering its inauguralsemester, the Alliance is still finalizing studentlodging plans. Students may expect semi-independent living arrangements with Indianfamilies. As residents of a university town,many Pune families have student apartmentswith independent access attached to theirhomes. This offers an ideal combination ofintegration within a host family and theautonomy to which U.S. college students areaccustomed.

Arcadia’s affiliation with the Institute of PublicAdministration (IPA), the leading educationalinstitution for civil service in Ireland, affords youthe chance to develop a real-world perspectiveon government, as well as on Irish politics. Inaddition, you’ll learn how a parliamentarysystem works. Only North American studentssponsored by the IPA have the privilege to internin both houses of the Irish Parliament, the DáilÉireann and the Seanad Éireann.

Before your fieldwork begins, you’ll participatein an orientation that will prepare you for yourparliamentary experience through intensiveinstruction that covers Ireland’s constitution,political parties, issues and procedures, andupcoming legislation. Your individual initiative,ability, past experience, and your relationshipwith the Member of Parliament or Teachta Dála (TD) you are interning with will largelydetermine the type of work you are assigned.Responsibilities may include conductingsurveys, researching and reporting on issuesrelated to public welfare, and preparing forpress briefings. The internship is unpaid andrequires at least two full days per week.

The courses are designed to provide you withthe necessary background to work effectivelyin your new cultural, social, and politicalenvironment, and are worth three credits each.Subjects include Irish Society and Politics,History of Modern Ireland, and Modern IrishLiterature. Courses are taught by faculty drawnfrom the Institute of Public Administration anduniversities in and around Dublin.

If you are a hands-on learner and are astudent of government, law, politics, history,economics, or sociology, an internship in theScottish parliament may be right for you.Through the University of Edinburgh’sScottish Parliamentary Internship, you canenjoy a unique opportunity to make asignificant contribution by working withmembers of the Scottish Parliament whowho, until recently, had not enacted theirown laws for three centuries.

During the first five weeks of the program,you’ll participate in three courses taught byaccomplished instructors from the Universityof Edinburgh’s Faculty of Social Sciences. Thecourses are designed to provide students withan overview of Scottish society, history, andculture, as well as to focus on Scottishgovernment and politics (including in relationto Great Britain). Students are required toenroll in the following three courses:

• Government and Politics in the U.K.

• Scottish Politics

• Scottish Society and Culture

Following the completion of coursework,you’ll participate in a 10-week internshipprogram under the direction of a member ofthe Scottish Parliament (MSP). Your assignedMSP will help you determine a researchproject and supervise your implementationof this project, which will be assessed by theacademic coordinator of the program. You

will not simply act as a file clerk or go fetchendless cups of tea. You will explore andwrite on significant policy questions. Recenttopics addressed by interns include FemaleRepresentation in the Scottish Parliament,Controlling Firearms in Scotland, theCriminal Justice (Scotland) Act of 2003 andits Effects on the Criminal Courts, and Suicidein Scotland: The Need for a Hotline. You willreceive research support from the University'sInstitute of Governance. The combination ofchallenging course work and the opportunityto work side by side with an MSP willprovide an unparalleled academic,professional, and personal experience.

semester internshipsIn addition to enrolling students in the regularsemester courses in Spanish language andculture (four to five courses), the Arcadiaprogram at the Fundación José Ortega y Gassetin Toledo offers these students the uniqueopportunity to experience the work world,including the Spanish work environment – andthus to further immerse themselves in Spanishlife and culture. Fieldwork is supplementedwith a course that looks at the Spanish labormarket from a historical, political, andeconomic perspective. The course challengesstudents to compare and contrast the Spanishworkplace with that of their own country, aswell to identify cross-cultural communicationissues and strategies for resolving them. Eachweek, students spend one and one-half hoursin class and approximately seven hours at theinternship sites.

All internships are supervised by professionalsin the related field. Past internship sites have in-cluded the regional parliament of Castilla LaMancha, Santa Cruz Museum, Toledo City Hallradio stations “Onda Cero” and “Radio Na-cional de España”, the Alcazar library, ToledoChamber of Commerce, and local hospitals.

Internship placements are availablein a number of areas, including business, regional government, health, communicationsand media, social work, tourism, and culturalorganizations. Students combine 15 to 30hours of on -site work with coursework cover-ing various topics related to working in Spainand the European Union. This summer oppor-tunity offers three to six hours of credit.

You will be positioned tolearn about important international development practicesin contemporary East Africa, while exploring this country ofextraordinary beauty and fascinating culture.

academic focusThe program will focus on the East Africa region and will beinformed by the legal and developmental work of thehuman rights organizations in operation there, including theEAC, the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal forRwanda (UN ICTR), and the African Union Court of Human

and People's Rights. This intensive summer program offers sixsemester hours of credit in international studies for comple-tion of the five-week symposium. Students will gain an un-derstanding of development at the community level, and theways in which grassroots projects build capacity and em-power communities.

Your studies will explore practical approaches to human-rights issues. Class visits to field sites in Arusha, where the Ny-erere Centre is based, and to the Masai community willcomplement lectures and discussions.

cultural orientationThe Arcadia staff will support your experience during your stayin Tanzania, which will include a thorough orientation. Youwill take part in a safari to a world heritage site, the Ngoron-goro Crater, located in Tanzania's famed Northern Circuit.
