Your birth photography shot list

You’ll hear me say it over and over again, every birth is different. However, you can certainly walk into each birth with a general idea of what to shoot. Kind of like the go-to shots. here are a handful of shots that i always make sure to get. if you can’t always get each of these, don’t sweat it! after time these become like clockwork.

☐ Outside shot of the birth location if it’s too dark or you can’t get the shot for another reason, try to find something in the waiting room or hallway that shows the name of the location, or something equally distinctive.

☐ Somewhat of a wide-angle shot of the birth place indoors Could be the hallway, or maybe the check-in area (or both!)

☐ The hospital door/room number or a shot peeking into the room/bedroom if at home or birth center.

☐ Details Music, birthing affirmations, baby items, candles, nurses whiteboard, the time, the date, essential oil, etc. ... anything that helps describe your client’s birth story.

☐ Dad/Partner with mom this will continue throughout the birth process, but capturing moments of encouragement, touch, bonding.

☐ Mom in labor this is a more obvious one, but i always make sure to capture mom in the different stages of labor.

☐ Birthing team. Does mom have a birth doula with her? is her mom, a sibling, a friend in the room? i make
