Many studies show that these foster children are far more likely than other children to experiment with illegal drugs, engage in sexual activity, or commit juvenile crimes within two years of leaving foster care. Recent studies have shown that youth who have aged out of the foster care experience disproportionate rates of unemployment, homelessness, mental illness and lack of health insurance Only 50% of teenagers who age out of the foster care system have a high school diploma or GED; 25% are homeless; 1 in 4 males and 1 in 10 females spend time in prison.
