Your Guide to Spicetember

Thank you for spicing up your night in and raising money for John Taylor Hospice! Right now we’re working round the clock to continue to provide end of life care for people across Birmingham and the West Midlands, while developing our current services to care for the people affected by coronavirus. As the situation continues to change, we continue to need your support, so thank you for helping us to help the NHS tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

How to hold your curry night with friends and family

Pick the time, date and place for your curry night this September.

Invite your friends and family and ask them to make a donation to come to your curry night. For help doing this, download our email template here.

Make it easy for your guests to make a donation and set up an online fundraising page with JustGiving by visiting www.justgiving.com/john-taylor-hospice or by setting up a Facebook Fundraiser by clicking ‘Raise Money’ on your personal page or collect donations at your curry night.

Download your John Taylor Hospice Fundraising Pack for more inspiration and to see how your fundraising is making a difference.

How to go virtual with your curry night

During these uncertain times, we know that sadly you might not be able to physically get your friends and family for your curry night. But never has there been a more important time to keep in touch, spend time together and support people facing a terminal illness and their families. So keep calm and curry on! And check out all the advice throughout the pack on how to organise your curry night and ‘go virtual’.

Getting online There are lots of different ways you can video call your friends and family using your smartphone, computer or tablet device where you and your guests can all see and interact with one another. Some options available are:

Video calling through Whatsapp or FaceTime

Create a Skype or Zoom account

Download an app like HouseParty

Try out Microsoft Teams

Don’t forget to include details of how people can join your curry night virtually in your invitation.

Eating together Pre-make your curry and drop it off at your guests’ houses before your curry night, and ask everyone to make a donation to your online fundraising page. Check out the fun fundraising ideas section below for ideas on how to raise more money.

Raising money

Without your incredible support we simply could not continue to care for so many local people and their families. As a valued and special member of #TeamJTH we promise you that we’ll be on hand to offer advice, provide you with any support you may need organising your curry night, share updates and thank you for any money you raise.

Raise money for the hospice by asking all of your friends and family to make a donation to come to your curry night.

FAQ's

Help – I can’t cook!

Don’t worry – make organising your curry night easy and order a takeaway for your guests instead! Or ask all of your guests to bring a dish. If you’re looking to put your cooking skills to the test, check out some of our simple recipes below.

Where can I hold my curry night?

It’s completely up to you where you hold your curry night. Whether it’s from the comfort of your own home, at your favourite Indian restaurant or in your office after work. Pick a space that suits you and can accommodate you and your guests.

Donating the money you’ve raised

Fundraising online is the safest and easiest way of fundraising at the moment, so don’t forget to set up your online fundraising page to collect donations from your guests. This money you raise is automatically sent to the hospice so it can start making a difference straight away!

Curry Cook–Off

Challenge your friends and family to put their cooking skills to the test and hold a curry cook-off. Ask everyone to make a dish, make a donation to enter the competition and during the evening use the scorecards below to rate each dish like your very own ‘Come Curry With Me’. Pick a prize for the winning dish or award half of the competition fees to the winner.

Chilli Challenge

Tickle your tastebuds by holding a chilli challenge! Ask everyone to make a donation to enter and see if they can take the heat. Invite your guests to take it in turns to try hot curry dishes, different chillis or chilli sauces.

Want to turn up the heat? Why not ask people to sponsor you (or one of your guests!) to eat as many chillis as you can in one minute or eat a meal smothered in hot chilli sauce.

Curry Companions

Raise some extra funds by making or buying some Indian sweets or desserts to sell to your guests or asking for extra donations for everyone to try a special curry night cocktail. Check out our favourite spicy cocktail recipe below.

Make Your Curry Count

Holding your curry night in a restaurant or community location? Why not ask if they’ll give you a discount for the room hire or make a donation to add to your fundraising total? Or, if you’re holding your curry night at work, see if your company will match the total you raise.

Curry-oake

For an extra bit of fun, set up some curry night karaoke and invite all your guests to make a donation to show off their singing skills.

Going virtual: Ask your guests if they want to make a dish for everyone to try and arrange to drop off your curries to one another before the evening.

Going virtual: Ask all of your friends and family to pre-prepare their favourite curry-oake songs to perform on the night and make a donation to take part. You could hold a sponsored sing-a-long and share it on social media along with your online fundraising page.

Going virtual: Pre-arrange your chilli challenge with your guests so you can all taste together. Drop off your hot dish or send your friends the list of chilli sauces you’re tasting. Film yourself and share the video online – don’t forget to ask your social media friends to sponsor you!

Chill with Chilli

Finish off your curry night with some chill time and put on your favourite film for your guests! Add to the fun by testing your guests’ knowledge with a film or curry-related quiz (like our template one below) and asking for a donation from everyone to enter. Pick a prize for the winner.

Take-It-In-Turns

Can’t get enough of your curry night? Take it in turns with your friends or family to host one each weekend throughout the month of ‘Spicetember’. Make donations that equate to the money you would have saved on a takeaway or going to a restaurant.
