HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | WELCOME TO HILLS ROAD
Welcome to Hills Road
4
I am incredibly proud of the fantastic staff and students of Hills Road who together
make this an exceptional place to study, to learn and to grow. Combined with the first
class facilities and specialist post-16 campus environment, we are really confident that
you will enjoy your time here.
The sixth form years are transformative as you make the
transition from childhood to adulthood and, as a specialist
Sixth Form College, our total focus is on helping you
make that transition a successful one. As you’ll see from
the information in the following pages, Hills Road students
not only achieve the best Sixth Form College results
nationally, but also go on to out-perform students from
all other types of schools and colleges once at university.
This is a stunning achievement and comes about through
the careful emphasis we place on equipping our students
to be effective independent learners. We want our
students to be curious about the world and ready to take
their place in it.
Hills Road is a busy, vibrant, exciting community of young
people who want to make a difference: it’s very much a
half-way house between school and university or school
and the world of work. The College is rich in student
societies, clubs and activities from archery and DJ skills
to fashion photography and golf and is also a place for
animated debate and discussion amongst the range of
student interest groups. Whatever your passion, there will
be someone here who shares it!
This is a College of opportunity: we hold high
expectations for ourselves and for our students because
we want you to have every opportunity to be the best
version of yourself at the end of your time with us.
We look forward to starting that first step on your journey
at our Open Evenings on Wednesday 8th and Thursday
9th November and, wherever you choose to continue your
learning post-16, may I wish you every happiness and
success.

HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | HILLS CREATES INDEPENDENCE
Hills Creates IndependenceSuccess in employment and higher education depends on the ability to be resourceful,
independent and adaptable. To help develop these qualities, students are given guidance
on study skills and independent access to resources and facilities, both physical and
digital, which support their development of skills towards successful progression into the
world of work and higher education.

HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | HILLS CREATES INDEPENDENCE
Becoming Effective Independent
Learners
Hills Road is a specialist, high achieving Sixth Form
College. Our teachers are highly experienced in teaching
A levels and are focused on supporting your smooth
transfer from GCSE and your successful onward progress
to university or the world of work. We want you to leave
the College capable of learning successfully throughout
your life. Teaching staff will be expecting you to take joint
responsibility with them for your own progress, setting
meaningful goals for how you can develop as a learner to
meet the demands of Advanced level study.
Learning is an exciting business and our teachers
want to ensure that it feels that way by offering you a
whole variety of learning experiences from one-to-one
formative feedback discussions to student-led debates;
from developing your own podcast to collaborating on a
shared workspace and from extended practical research
to contributing to presentations, shows and installations.
The incredibly wide range of lesson activities ensures
that, whatever kind of learner you are, you will find the
experience stimulating and possibly life-path changing.
The Extended Project Qualification
At the heart of our Study Programme is the requirement
for every student to develop and realise an advanced
level project entirely of your own devising. Delivered in
Year 12, the Extended Project offers the chance for you
to gain real independence, resilience and maturity as an
advanced level learner, while pursuing any topic of your
choosing. From staging a fashion show to designing a
carbon neutral house, from researching ground-breaking
cancer therapies to beginning the novel you’ve always
wanted to write, the Extended Project presents a fantastic
opportunity both to pursue your interests and to spread
your wings.
Taught in a university style through seminars and 1:1
tutorials, this is a qualification that prepares you well for
higher education as well as for employment, focusing
as it does on all those crucial skills that you develop
when you take a project through from drawing board to
delivery. Just as importantly, it allows you to carve out
entirely your own pathway and really follow your own
interests. Best of all, the Extended Project Qualification
is equivalent to half an A level and is well regarded by
universities as evidence that the transition from college
to university will be a smooth one for students who have
successfully demonstrated their aptitude for independent
learning. For more information about the Extended Project
Qualification, please visit:

HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | HILLS CREATES INDEPENDENCE
Independent study spaces,
resources and facilities
Success in employment and higher education depends
on the ability to be resourceful, independent and
adaptable. To help develop these qualities, students are
given guidance on study skills and independent access to
resources and facilities, both physical and digital, which
support their development of skills towards successful
progression into the world of work and higher education.
At Hills, we place a strong emphasis on the opportunities
offered through information learning technologies and you
will find that all your subjects expect you to extend your
learning through a digital resource bank of materials -
accessible at any time – to supplement and enhance your
classroom learning experience.
One of the significant differences between GCSE and
A level is the expectation all subjects will have for
independent learning to be completed in addition to class
and home work. A really important part of the Hills Road
experience is therefore our virtual learning resources,
which are held in the cloud version of Sharepoint 365,
accessible from wherever you are studying. Extension
and support materials are available online to challenge
and enhance your learning at every stage. Over 800
computers are available throughout the College, in
the Library and Resources Centre and in open access
departmental resource areas too. The College benefits
from site-wide high speed wi-fi access that allows our
students fast broadband speeds as standard.
Several areas of College are designated as wi-fi zones
where students can bring and use their own devices to
access the College’s available resources. Every student
is issued with their own Outlook email account and their
own 1Tb storage space through OneDrive and Office 365.
This allows seamless sharing and accessing of materials
from all devices whether at home or at College. Our
computer and wi-fi based services allow you to access a
full variety of resources and software packages that are
relevant to the subjects you are studying. You can also
access careers and tutorial support materials, some of
which are within ProPortal which is your own personalised
progress and guidance network space.
Social Spaces and Cafés
We even have our own cafés, including Costa, within our
campus environment, meaning that you learn to manage
your time, balancing study and socialising during your
time at Hills.
Our students tell us that this prepares them really well
for making good choices when it comes to university
in particular and, we know that life at Hills is a great
preparation for university, as our students go on to
out-perform students from all other kinds of school and
settings when they get there. We believe that’s directly
linked to the importance we place on developing the
independence of our students.

HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | HILLS ENRICHES YOU
Enriching Your ExperienceYour A level subjects form the basis of your Study Programme - they make up your core
qualification - but, beyond that, all our students are enrolled in the Extended Curriculum
as part of your Study Programme too.
11
Enrichment
A real strength of the Hills experience is the dazzling
variety of Enrichment opportunities on offer. You can get
involved with everything from archery to chamber choir
and from robotics to rowing. Activities include music,
sport, art, drama, languages, discussion groups, Duke
of Edinburgh and almost as many other things as you
can think of. We expect all students in Year 12 to
undertake Enrichment as part of their Study Programme
and we hope that there will genuinely be something
for everyone. It could even be that you find a new
talent or skill through Enrichment that you would like
to turn into your Extended Project. Perhaps you will
develop architectural skills and will consider your own
Grand Design, or maybe your debating Enrichment will
encourage you to start a political commentary blog.
Whatever you decide, Enrichment is your chance to try
something new and learn in different ways.
College community
As part of our community, you will be encouraged to
improve your skills of enquiry and communication,
to exercise your rights and responsibilities effectively,
and to develop your role as a well-informed and active
citizen. For those who seek more active involvement,
opportunities include membership of the Student Council,
membership of societies and participation in debates
with our dazzling line up of speakers. Opportunities exist
for you to volunteer your services for any of the College’s
major community events and to be an involved and
active member of our student body. Recent examples of
whole College community events include the annual July
HillsFest, the Hills Road 5km fun run, and the ever popular
Copa del Hills five-a-side football tournament
We encourage students to be part of our growing
voluntary work programme through which you can
volunteer to work with hospitals, schools and individuals
and enrich the lives of others as well as your own.
Clubs and Societies, Visiting
Speakers and Talks
On joining the College, you will be struck by the diverse
range of opportunities there are open to you. Most
departments and student members of some of the many
clubs and societies organise a diverse range of visiting
speakers to come and talk at lunchtime to challenge and
stimulate your imagination about what’s possible for you
and where your studies could lead you career-wise.
Languages, Recreation and Skills
If you don’t want to take a language at A level, a number
of other opportunities are available to enable you to try
a new one with the Enrichment programme. There are
numerous opportunities to play sport just for fun too, such
as ultimate frisbee, badminton or slacklining – get involved
and have a go!

Drama and Dance
Drama and Dance in the College’s professional, high-tech
Robinson Theatre have always been one of our strengths,
and you can get involved both on stage and behind the
scenes. Through the Enrichment programme you will
be offered many opportunities to develop your skills by
choosing either to perform, direct or be a technician.
Dedicated technical training is offered under the guidance
of our staff theatre technicians.
In addition, many of our students and past students
have been involved with our own Fusion festival at Hills
Road and the Junction and with the Hotbed new writing
festival run by local company Menagerie. We also support
Temper Theatre and The Craft Ensemble.
Our in-house Dance Company of enrichment dancers
meets weekly to create choreography towards a
performance later in the year. Students are encouraged
to take advantage of the College facilities and often use
them for extra technique and choreography sessions, as
well as performances.

Music
A large variety of musical activities are offered as part
of the Enrichment programme. These activities are
open to all students regardless of subjects studied.
Some of the ensembles are auditioned and some are
open to all. There are regular concerts, both formal and
informal, held at venues such as Ely Cathedral, King’s
College Chapel, West Road Concert Hall and also at the
College, with plenty of opportunities for ensemble and
solo performances. The Chamber Choir and a group of
instrumentalists tour overseas every two years, alternating
with the Jazz Orchestra and FolkRoots group.

HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | DEVELOPING SPORT EXCELLENCE
Developing Sports ExcellenceThe College’s Sports and Tennis Centre offers all students the opportunity to use some
of the finest sports facilities in East Anglia whether you are a serious sports person or
you just aim to keep a good level of fitness. It includes a sports hall, fitness suite, squash
court, cricket hall, and indoor and outdoor competition level tennis courts.
17
Hills Road students achieve sporting excellence in equal
measure to their academic success, supported by the
fantastic facilities available at the College. As well as the
9 acres of football, rugby and cricket pitches that the
College owns at Luard Road, we also recently opened
a million-pound purpose built pavilion to support our
students’ sporting success.
The College’s Sports and Tennis Centre offers all students
the opportunity to use some of the finest sports facilities
in East Anglia whether you are a serious sports person or
you just aim to keep a good level of fitness. It includes a
sports hall, fitness suite, squash court, cricket hall, and
indoor and outdoor competition level tennis courts.
All students have access to these facilities for training, for
Enrichment activities or for recreational use during free
time. The sports hall is a multi-purpose facility equipped
for activities such as badminton, basketball, volleyball,
netball, circuits, five-a-side football, aerobics and table
tennis. The fitness suite is very popular with students
working on their personalised training programmes.
It contains a range of cardiovascular machines and
resistance equipment in keeping with a modern fitness
centre, and three TVs to keep you entertained whilst
training. For cricketers, the Sir Jack Hobbs Cricket Hall
has a floor surface comparable with the cricket school at
Lords and two bowling machines will deliver the perfect
ball every time at up to 90mph. If you enjoy tennis, the
indoor and outdoor courts do not get much better,
including the only clay courts in Cambridgeshire. The
College provides an excellent opportunity to train to a high
standard within a supportive environment.
Competitive Sports
While we offer a huge range of social sports, the College
also has a regional and national reputation for its sporting
success. Sports trials in the Summer before joining
allow students to aim for selection to become part of the
thriving community of sport that exists at the College.
The College offers a wide range of sport and other
physical activities and many of our students choose to
participate in one or more of them. The above sports are
the main College team sports that involve committing to
weekly training and match play. However, some students
take part for exercise and enjoyment alone, whilst others
are members of one or more of our successful College
teams. Team sports at the College are actively supported
and successful, with many students representing
the East region. Many of the sports teams compete
in the Cambridgeshire leagues and national schools
competitions.
Many Hills students have represented Cambridgeshire
and the East, and in recent years we have had national
representatives in wheelchair basketball, hockey, athletics,
cricket and tennis. The sport department organises
sporting tours (both home and abroad) and trips to major
sporting events, e.g. Wimbledon and 20/20 cricket, and
we host numerous touring sides including schools from
Australia and South Africa.

Supporting You All The Way
HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | SUPPORTING YOU
Support and guidance are offered in many different ways, not least in the contacts
and conversations which take place each day between staff and students both in and
outside lessons. As well as these informal contacts, tutorial guidance is designed to
enable you to make wise choices, discuss career plans, assess your own progress
and seek help if problems arise.
23
HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | SUPPORTING YOU
Tutorial support and guidance
At the heart of support and guidance in the College is
the relationship between each student and their tutor.
You will have a specialist tutor assigned to you when you
join the College. Your tutor will be available to meet you
individually on a regular basis to review your progress,
support your individual needs and discuss issues which
either of you may wish to raise.
You will also meet with your tutor once a week, as part
of a tutor group, where you will be supported by a
weekly tutorial programme of activities that will enable
you to acquire information, develop skills and engage in
discussion. Within the tutorial programme, the focus is
on your mental and physical health and wellbeing and
also on supporting your progress and developing your
employability.
Student Services Team
At the centre of the College is the Student Services Team.
This team is there to support you with answers to any
questions that you might have about College life. Located
in the middle of the College, this friendly and supportive
team are there to help you if you’re feeling unwell, unsure,
or if you just need someone to speak to. This is also
the team that will be monitoring your attendance weekly
and contacting home to alert them to any concerns we
might have.
Our Wellbeing Co-ordinators are a key part of our
Student Services Team and have the time available to talk
through any worries or concerns you might have. They
could refer you on to our in-house counselling service, or
to external sources of support, should that
be appropriate.
Supported Independent
Learning Service
The Supported Independent Learning Service is another
key part of the network of support you’ll find right across
the College. We recognise that not all students can
adjust to A level demands as quickly as others; so, in
addition to the support provided by personal tutors, we
also have a dedicated Supported Independent Learning
Service. Its role is to provide timetabled supervision and
support for students who are finding the expectations
for completing independent study outside lesson time
challenging, working with them to prioritise their learning
more effectively.
Subject Support for Learning and
Extension
All departments and subjects offer opportunities to
support and extend your learning beyond the classroom.
Often, these opportunities are offered as lunchtime
‘surgery’ slots, used to diagnose, challenge and support
your understanding further. These are occasions when
you can work one-to-one with subject specialists to
flesh out your ideas, either going back over topics to
understand them better or pushing your knowledge
and extending your learning beyond the specification,
where appropriate. Many subjects take part in external
competitions to enable students to challenge themselves
further by competing against other students nationally and
sometimes even internationally.
Organisation, Time Management,
Exam Technique and Revision
Adjusting to life at a sixth form college can be a challenge.
Students are supported, through their subject areas, to
become independent learners and for subject specific
guidance, surgeries and support within departments are
likely to be the most effective type of support. However,
for more general support, the supported individual
learning service can offer guidance on organisation, time
management, exam technique and revision.
HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | SUPPORTING YOU
Study Skills Centre
The Study Skills Team offers a calm and warm welcome
to any student who would like to access additional
support for their studies. Study Skills has an open door
policy and is located next to the Library. It has a suite of
rooms available for supporting student needs from 1:1
diagnostic assessment rooms through student group
study space and also a comfortable rest space for
students needing rehabilitation following significant illness
or those managing ongoing chronic conditions. The team
is keen to address and support across the full spectrum
of student need. Please come and talk to them at one
of our Open Evenings in November to discuss your
needs and how we might best meet them.
“When I came to Hills Road I doubted my abilities and felt
I would never be able to produce the level of work required
for the A level standard but you all had faith in me which
helped me carry on. My confidence returned and whatever my
results may be you gave me the will to carry on.”

HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | SUPPORTING YOU
Meeting Your Needs
Disability
We are committed to meeting the needs of people with
disabilities, recognising that a disability can affect people
in different ways. We encourage people with disabilities to
make relevant staff aware of their needs so that full and
appropriate support may be provided.
Learning Difficulties
The Study Skills Centre has a wide variety of resources
to help students with their learning needs. Qualified staff
are available to carry out assessments for exam access
arrangements and then to offer appropriate support.
Individual and small-group support is available for a
variety of needs.
Trained staff are able to support students with everyday
tasks where appropriate. For students who have particular
issues with dexterity, specialist software or scribe support
can be arranged through the Study Skills Centre.
At Hills Road we are always striving for excellence in
all we do; and that includes our support for students’
learning needs. If you have concerns about a learning
need please contact the Study Skills Centre by telephone
or email: [email protected].
“I found that Study Skills helped a lot with essays and my grades
have gone up over the time so I’m really pleased with that.”

One of the most important things we do as a Sixth
Form College is to support you in deciding on your
career goals and supporting you to realise them. As a
specialist sixth form college, all of our careers staff are
post-16 specialists, dedicated to providing you with the
very best advice about your next steps, whether that
be into traineeships, higher education, apprenticeships
or any other pathway. We can offer individual advice
and consultations and support you with a range of
information, including through our February Progression
Week when universities and employers come in to talk to
our students about a whole range of exciting futures. The
important thing is that we help and support you with your
goals, whatever they may be.
For most students the process of researching
opportunities and making choices takes place during Year
12, in readiness for applications to Higher Education early
in Year 13. Each year over 90% of our students enter
degree courses, with over 30% taking the opportunity for
a gap year between Hills Road and Higher Education to
broaden their experience. Information events for parents
are arranged concerning UCAS applications, gap year
activities and HE finance as well as a mock interview
programme for students.
Careers Advice

• Organising a structured programme
of careers education.
• Offering guidance through personal interviews
and group work.

employment or apprenticeships.

apply for a degree programme, going through questions
and providing advice and guidance regarding my CV and
presentation. Although I didn’t end up getting the first place,
I reached the final 13 and I used my experience and further
guidance to gain three further assessment centre places for
apprenticeships at Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Morrisons.”
James is now looking forward to a career at Tesco’s head office
on a funded degree programme.
Jonny Littlewood attended Cottenham
Village College before joining Hills Road
to study A level Biology, Chemistry and
Maths.
Jonny said, “Initially I found it difficult
to settle in and get the hang of the
concepts in my lessons. After a lot of
hard work, support for my dyslexia and
some of the best teachers that I am still in contact with today
- I was able to drive myself forward and this really helped me
to achieve my degree.”
Jonny took a gap year before accepting a place at the University
of East Anglia to read Physiotherapy and is now working as a
Physiotherapist at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.
Elly Flores attended Bottisham Village
College before joining Hills Road to study
A level Economics, Geography and
Government & Politics.
“I had initially thought that I would study
law at university, but during my time at
Hills Road, learning about both the British
and American political systems and how
the economy works in Government and Politics and Economics
A Level, my interest in politics grew further and I decided that I
wanted to study International Relations at university instead.”
Elly went on to read International Relations at the London School
of Economics. During the third year she applied to, and was
subsequently offered a position on the Generalist Fast Stream
programme in the Civil Service.
Carmen Hodgkiss attended St Mary’s
School before joining Hills Road to
study A level Biology, Chemistry, English
Literature and Maths.
“I was sure that I didn’t want to do
Medicine but I had a big interest in
health and disease, and in healthy
eating and exercise. I booked a careers
interview and found out about Dietetics as an Allied Health
Career. The Careers Advisor at Hills Road suggested that I
should do some work experience at Addenbrookes and as
soon as I did that, I knew that it was the career for me.”
Carmen went on to do a four-year degree course in Nutrition
and Dietetics at the University of Surrey. She is now a
Registered Dietitian and working at Addenbrookes Hospital!
Aleksi Simons attended Comberton
Village College before joining Hills Road to
study A level Biology, Chemistry, Maths.
In addition, Aleksi’s Extended Project
Qualification was medical based.
“I had already chosen that I wanted
to aim to be a doctor - but it was the
transition through sixth form that allowed
me to educate and prepare myself for the experience that lay
ahead. Hills Road went the extra mile in providing facilities and
extra advice and support for moving to university.”
Aleksi is in his second year of studying medicine at the University
of Leeds and is thoroughly enjoying it!
Sophie Rutter came from an out-area
school to Hills Road to study A level
Economics, History and Maths.
“I decided in Year 12 that I wanted to
do an apprenticeship rather than go to
university. I went for a careers interview at
Hills Road and began to explore areas I
was interested in. I also attended several
one-on-one meetings with the Careers Advisor to discuss
my options and receive advice about how I would approach
the various stages of the application processes for the firms I
decided to apply to. There were lots of employer talks in the
College and many of them were with Accounting firms.”
Sophie has secured a position as a Junior Management
Consultant at PwC in London and after two years, if successful,
she will be joining their Graduate Programme.

HILLS ROAD PROSPECTUS 2018 | GIVING YOU CHOICE
Choosing Your Subjects
One of the great things about choosing to study at a
specialist A level College is the huge array of choice that
you will find, not only in the A level subjects available, but
also in the amazing opportunities offered by all the extra-
curricular activities on offer. The Study Programme for all
students at Hills includes:
• 3 or 4 A level subjects (your core qualifications)
• The Extended Project Qualification
• Enrichment
• Clubs and Societies
• Support and Guidance
• Career and Employability development
At Hills, we offer 34 A level subjects in total giving you
a fantastic range to choose from. Choosing your A level
subjects can be daunting though, not least because there
are so many. Whatever your final decision, you need to
consider: what subjects you enjoy; what subjects you are
good at; the career implications of your choice and your
predicted grades: do they provide you with what you need
to access specific A level subjects?
Most of us enjoy things we are good at and are good at
things we enjoy. Try to keep this in mind when researching
which subjects to study. For a subject which is new to
you, do your research! Talk to people who are already
doing it or have done it; read the following subject pages
32 to 66 of this Prospectus and on the College’s website:
www.hillsroad.ac.uk; find out about what kind of topics
you will cover; find out what career options they could
open up to you. It is also very important to talk to your
teachers, careers staff, parents and friends who know you
well: their advice is important.
We hope you enjoy looking through the following pages to
find a combination of subjects that is just right for you.

Why choose Biology?
Apart from its value as a way of gaining entry to certain careers
and courses, we believe that Biology is a fascinating subject in its
own right and one that we hope students enjoy studying. Biology
has a higher profile today than perhaps at any other time and this is
reflected in the number of people studying a biology-based course
at college and university.
Many of the important and often contentious issues which society
must address relate to the biological sciences, particularly the
role that humankind plays with respect (or lack of it!) to the rest
of life. Ethical debates centre around animal experimentation,
cloning, stem cells, genetically modified organisms, embryo and
fertility research, and the human genome project and the use
of its findings. High on the political agenda are health, pollution,
environmental protection and food security. Infectious disease,
heart disease, cancer, drug use and misuse, antibiotic resistance
and malnutrition all continue to present us with challenges, for
which the study of Biology is the first step to understanding.
Love life, love biology:
it’s the study of all life’s forms.

Why choose Business?
The business world is constantly changing and evolving as economic,
technological, political and environmental developments alter the
commercial landscape. Studying Business will provide you with an
understanding of how businesses, large and small, can successfully
deal with these challenges. Amongst the issues you will consider are:
• What are the threats to profits of businesses and are they limited to
just rival companies?
• Is a recession always bad news for businesses?
• How will the UK leaving the EU affect UK businesses
• Should businesses take responsibility for being more ethical?
• How can financial statements be used to assess the strengths
and weaknesses of a company?
• Are emerging economies an opportunity or threat to businesses
based in developed economies?
• Is it always best for businesses to aim to grow? If so, how?
A willingness to use numerical techniques is important, as is the ability
to communicate effectively in writing. You will learn through case
studies, research assignments, class discussions and group activities.
Whatever your chosen career path, chances
are you’ll be working for and managing
within some sort of business in the future

Why choose Chemistry?
Knowledge of Chemistry will give you a greater understanding of
the world we live in. Chemistry is the study of substances, what
they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living
things and the environment. Everything you see around you involves
Chemistry in some way! Chemists provide many of the materials
used in everyday life, together with the knowledge to improve
healthcare and to appreciate and tackle the major environmental
problems that face us all.
If you enjoy finding out about how the world around you works,
and recognising and explaining different patterns of behaviour then
you are likely to enjoy Chemistry. Throughout the course, you will
carry out practical work to develop your skills and to enhance your
learning and enjoyment of the subject. You will be encouraged
to participate in competitions such as the RSC Schools’ Analyst
Competition and the International Chemistry Olympiad, and there
are opportunities to attend conferences and university taster
events.

Why choose Classical Civilisation?
Classical Civilisation involves in-depth study of the classical
Greek and Roman worlds which have strongly influenced western
literature, theatre, art and philosophy. You will learn to develop an
independent, critical approach to literature, history and politics and
to form strong analytical skills. Many students find it a valuable
support for other arts subjects, while for others it is a pleasing
contrast to the sciences.
You will have the opportunity to go on trips, to plays, conferences,
museums and, in some years, to visit classical sites abroad such
as those in Rome, Sicily and Greece. There is also the opportunity
to take part in a student-led Classics society which offers
opportunities to hear outside speakers, presentations, debates,
discussions and experience games on classical themes. Many
students of Classical Civilisation go on to study classical subjects
at university; others find that the analytical thinking and writing
skills prove to be a great help in other higher education courses
and in any career.

Why choose Computer Science?
Have you ever wondered how the Web works? Or how anybody
can start to develop something as complex as a new computer
game? Computer Science is an exciting and challenging subject
in which you will develop valuable skills in problem solving as
well as learning how computers work. Many of our students go
on to higher education courses in computer science but you will
gain skills and knowledge which will prove useful in a wide range
of other courses and careers, particularly in maths, science and
engineering. The new A level course is even more strongly focussed
on problem solving and programming. You will learn how to analyse
problems, design algorithms and write programs.
Some students have no previous experience of programming and
we assume none. We provide excellent support in the form of online
resources and one-to-one help. However, we also provide adequate
challenges for the increasing number of students who have taken a
GCSE in Computing or Computer Science.

Why choose Dance?
The study of dance is active, physically demanding, intellectually
stimulating and fun. This course places huge emphasis on
practical dance work across a range of styles, as well as on the
analysis of professional choreography. Exploring the work of some
of the foremost names in dance will lead to an understanding
of their techniques and how to apply them to your own creative
work, developing your confidence as an inspiring choreographer.
You will learn how to train effectively and safely, and improve your
skills through many performances both in our theatre and in the
wider community. Additionally, you will develop your collaborative
and communication skills, and learn how to write analytically
about dance. Trips to the theatre to see live performances and
workshops from visiting practitioners are an exciting and enriching
part of the course.
The course is crucial in preparing you for degree or vocational
dance courses, but is also ideal if you have a love of dance and
wish to develop your own skills. This is a highly practical course,
with dance and creative work at the heart of the lessons.
“To touch, to move, to inspire – this is the

more of it per day than at any other time in human history. Our
need to understand ourselves through the mirror of stage or screen
becomes ever more urgent as the world becomes more complex.

socially, as you explore ethical issues in a way that is designed

great theatre, from text and performance to technical elements
and design. You will study superb plays by brilliant playwrights
and perform them alongside your own devised work. You will
explore the work of the most influential directors of the modern
age, supported by a dynamic programme of theatre trips and
professional workshops. Essential for those going on to specialist

Why choose Economics?
It is an exciting time to study Economics. Many of the most important
issues facing society are economic in nature. Whether you are
concerned with global warming or global trade, whether you are
concerned about the potential impacts of Brexit, whether you are
looking at the collapse of world financial markets or the collapse of
your neighbour’s small business, you can’t get far without knowledge
of economics. This course aims to stimulate your interest in how
economies work – at personal, national and global levels. A sample of
the issues you will be encouraged to investigate are:
• What might be the impacts of Brexit upon the UK Economy?
• Why has the UK economy experienced both boom conditions
and slumps in the past?
• What determines the level of UK interest rates? Is a strong
pound desirable?
• Why are footballers paid more than nurses?
• What are the implications of a national minimum wage?
• Should the health service be provided by the state
or the private sector?
• Do the activities of multinationals assist or hinder
the development of poor countries?
• Why have African economies been slow to develop?
Should we provide aid?
Many of the most important issues facing
society are economic in nature.

Why choose English Language?
Do you ever wonder why people use language in so many
different ways? Do you enjoy expressing your opinions on spoken
and written language? If so, you will find this course particularly
fascinating. You will also develop valuable tools for investigating
how language actually works. As part of the new A level you will
analyse a range of written texts, explore electronic communication
and study many different kinds of spoken texts. To underpin
all this, you will learn the terminology and grammar to enable
you to understand how language works. You will also discover
how children learn to speak during the initial years of life and
how language represents different social groups. You will learn
mostly by investigation, group work and discussion. Some of the
most interesting classes will be when students bring in their own
samples of language for analysis. Your work will be supported by
a rich set of intranet resources including a wonderful set of speech
recordings from across the country.

Why choose English Language
and Literature?
English Language and Literature is a course which will give you
a chance to pursue your own creative interests within a clear
framework, while developing your analytical skills. Literary texts
such as Larkin’s poetry and The Great Gatsby will be studied under
the theme of The Individual and Society. You will also study Voices
in Speech and Writing, looking at podcasts, blogs, speeches,
screenplays, and travelogues. The stimulus material in the anthology
is fascinating!
Coursework is part of the course, and the topic will be ‘Identities’.
You will produce your own creative fiction and non-fiction work
and a critical commentary, stimulated by texts including 1984 by
George Orwell and the articles of journalists such as Caitlin Moran
and Charlie Brooker. So, if you are an independent thinker who
enjoys analysing how values and attitudes are created in texts and
you enjoy producing your own imaginative, creative work, this is the
course for you!
Why choose English Literature?
While you are avidly reading the latest book on your shelf, do you
ever ask yourself ‘What else has this author written?’ or wonder
‘What were the ideas of the period that made the writer think
this way?’ ‘What did reviewers think of this book when it was
first published?’ If so, English Literature is a course you will find
particularly attractive.
Examined Topics
During your study of English Literature, you will study eight texts,
while being encouraged to read independently, widely and in-depth.
This will include the study of all three genres: Poetry, Drama and
Prose across a range of periods. These will include a selection
of Contemporary Poetry written Post- 2000, the Romantic John
Keats, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and the thematic exploration of
either ‘Science and Society’ or ‘Women and Society’ in the novel.
Coursework forms part of this A level course and the theme for the
coursework is Colonial and Postcolonial Literatures.
Creative Writing
The English Literature course does not include creative writing. If
you would like to be writing creatively, then take a look at our English

Why choose Film Studies?
Film Studies is designed to enrich your existing appreciation and
enjoyment of film.
It is a well-established academic subject which offers you the
opportunity to engage with a wide range of different films and gain
confidence with a range of critical approaches to film.
You will be learning to ‘read’ a film; considering the nature of the
relationship between an audience and a film, and studying the
importance of social and institutional factors to film production.
The subject lends itself to a wide range of approaches: class
discussion, individual study and research, written analysis; essays,
writing screenplays, producing storyboards and film journalism.
There will also be opportunities for cinema visits. You will also
be supported to develop skills of critical analysis; to examine
the meanings and values contained in films; to understand and
‘read’ the language of films, and to understand cinema as an
industry. Films we may study include Vertigo, Do the Right Thing,
District 9 and Hurt Locker. You will develop your knowledge of
film history focusing on classic films from the silent era, European
experimental films and more recent films like Skyfall and Star
Wars: The Force Awakens.
Enrich your existing appreciation
and enjoyment of film.

Why choose Geology?
In your first year of study you get to investigate all about minerals, rocks
and fossils formed in different places and times as well as tectonics.
Rocks tell the history of the Earth and are a fascinating subject to study.
There is an opportunity to study in the field on the remote Scottish
island of Arran. In your second year you will build on the knowledge to
investigate the subject to a greater depth, including a fieldtrip to Dorset.
There are many career pathways which lead on from a Geology course.
For example volcanology, civil engineering, environmental engineering,
forensic science, mining and the study of ancient environments which
helps us to understand climate change.
Studying Geology at A level provides a unique opportunity to take a new
and dynamic science subject. This can be taken further at degree level
or as a supporting subject for other degrees in Earth and Environmental
sciences.
Students have the support and guidance of well qualified Geologists and
access to a specialist laboratory and a rich collection of rock and fossil
samples to analyse.
We welcome applications and if you have further questions please
contact: Dr Kevin Jones [email protected]
Discover the origin and evolution of our
dynamic Earth. Investigate the processes and
changes which have shaped our planet.

Why choose Government & Politics?
Politics is the way in which a society or a group manages different
views, conflict and disagreement. Politics is about compromise;
it’s about power; it’s about government. We look at these aspects
through studies of UK and global politics, examining the political
structures and issues of debate both in the UK and around the
world. You will develop research and communication skills through
a balanced handling of political questions, an interest in citizenship
and an up-to-date knowledge of current affairs. You will develop your
analytical skills by evaluating political concepts and arguments from
competing and sometimes controversial perspectives. These are
skills highly valued by Higher Education institutions and employers.
There is an active student-led Politics Society, and a programme of
visiting speakers. The department organises annual study trips to
the Houses of Parliament in London, and an international residential
trip. Politics students go on to study a wide variety of subjects
at university, including PPE (Philosophy, Politics & Economics),
international relations, law, journalism and history.

Why choose Latin?
Latin gives students the key to a rich and influential literature and
to a range of modern languages. Historical context and Roman
ideas and values are studied as part of the background to literature
and language. You will learn to think logically and analytically about
language and literature and you will develop a critical approach
to ideas of Roman society and compare them with those current
today. There are also opportunities for developing research and
presentation skills as well as trips to conferences and plays and,
in some years, to Rome.
The work is challenging but rewarding and some students have
gone on to study classics at universities including Oxbridge.
Latin A level is now offered by few state schools and colleges; it is
a relatively rare qualification valued by universities and employers
alike.

Why choose Physical Education?
The scientific study of exercise, health and sport is big business,
from the riches of professional sport to the equally important
personal fitness sector. The impact of sport on both our individual
lives and the global economy cannot be overstated. A level PE
covers an incredibly diverse range of topics. You learn about how
the body works: anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, how
performance can be enhanced, analysed and monitored and about
the multiple health benefits of physical activity. For example, did you
know that inactivity is costing the NHS around £7.4 billion a year?
You will also study psychology, nutrition, sports injury prevention
and management and sport business to understand the financial
side of the sport industry. You will also gain an understanding of
the role that sport played in the past and the role it will play in the
future. Essentially you will develop the skills of a scientist as well as
those of an arts student.

Why choose Physics?
In investigating the fundamental principles of how the universe
works, Physics is a rewarding study for those of you with an
inquiring mind. It is also the basis on which all forms of technology
are built. The course seeks to promote sound understanding and
application of physical concepts along with self-reliance in tackling
independent tasks, both theoretical and practical. Growth of
logical and numerical ability accompanies the development of the
subject material.
This goes hand-in-hand with your development, increasing your
responsibility for your own learning. Such skills are important in
all future forms of professional activity and particularly so in those
areas which require a predominantly logical or numerate approach.
Physics is a fascinating subject and, whilst it can be studied at
higher education in its own right, it is also commonly studied by
those wishing to go on to engineering courses, medical courses,
architecture or degrees in other science areas and it is a widely
accepted qualification for any area which requires numeracy or
logical thought.

Why choose Psychology?
Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and
experience. This stimulating subject combines fascinating content
with a rigorous and scientific approach to investigation. It has
recently undergone a huge growth in popularity, both as a choice
for A level and undergraduate students. The course aims to develop
both an academic understanding of the subject and an appreciation
of its impact on people’s daily lives.
Psychology A level develops your ability to formulate an argument
by presenting and critically evaluating research evidence.
Accurate and concise writing is important in answering short
structured questions and longer essay style questions. There is no
coursework, but an important element of the course is practical:
designing and carrying out research, reporting findings and
analysing data. This provides good opportunities to develop IT and
number skills. Lunchtime workshops and a peer-mentoring scheme
provide further opportunities to further your understanding. There
is a student-run Psychology Society which organises lunchtime
talks by visiting speakers and shows videos of programmes of
psychological interest.

Why choose Religious Studies?
Religious Studies is an attractive option if you are interested in
studying the fundamental questions which all human beings ask:
“What is the point of being alive?”, “What or who is God?”, “Why
is there suffering and evil in the world?”, “What is the right way to
live?” and “Is there anything beyond death?” The subject gets to
grips with people’s real lives, what they believe and what makes
them act as they do. It is also about societies and cultures often
very different from your own, and how these have evolved over
time. It also introduces you to some of the great debates and
thinkers in religion, ethics and philosophy. Religious Studies will
appeal to you if you are enthusiastic and thoughtful enough to want
to understand fascinating concepts and the deeply held convictions
of others, and to examine your own prejudices, assumptions and
beliefs. The approach taken to studying Religious Studies is an
objective, open-ended and exploratory one, encouraging debate
and enabling students both to step imaginatively into the shoes of
religious believers and to grapple with new ideas.
Does God exist? How should we live?
Get to grips with what people believe and

Why choose Sociology?
Because you’re curious about the world in which you live and
your place in it. Sociologists are interested in why society works
in the way that it does. They conduct research into, and also look
at, the extent to which behaviour – and opportunities – can be
shaped by social class, age, gender and race. This course will
help you understand the ways in which individual lives are shaped
by social institutions such as the education system, religion and
the mass media, and investigates key contemporary problems,
such as poverty, religious extremism and crime. Through research
and investigation, you will develop a range of transferable skills,
amongst them the ability to construct and deconstruct arguments
both orally and in writing, analyse information critically and present
information logically. Sociology is a subject within the Political
and Social Sciences department at Hills Road. The department
regularly invites outside speakers to come into the College to
speak to you.

“Sociology is a great subject where you learn to analyse society. It’s a really warm environment where we all feel confident to share our views.”

Why choose Spanish?
If you dream of speaking a foreign language fluently and
impressively and perhaps even working abroad, studying a
language will bring this ambition within your grasp and it will
equip you with a variety of unique skills that will be invaluable in
the future. You will become a more knowledgeable and informed
person and debates and discussions in the classroom will give
you a broad perspective on a wide range of issues and topics.
You will also gain in-depth knowledge of Spain and Spanish
speaking countries. Topics will include social issues and trends, as
well as the opportunity to explore cultural themes through film or
literature. There are native Foreign Language Assistants working in
the Modern Languages department who are available to help and
support you with small group conversation work. We run a peer
mentoring scheme and there will be the opportunity for you to take
part in an exchange link to Spain.
Gain an in-depth knowledge of the
culture and society of Spain and speak a
foreign language fluently.
What you will need to study

“I like learning in depth about Spanish culture and a film in Spanish. The highlight of the course was definitely the Spanish exchange to Santander.”
