Five Things We’re Talking About

Racquel Black Puts AWB One Step Ahead for the Summer

Technology certainly opens up a world of information and knowledge that is beneficial to both adults and children alike,

but parents must be careful to teach their children how to use it safely and do everything in their power to protect them from negative influences. We also bring you highlights of the All Wet Beachwear (AWB) Family and Friends Sale event held over the

weekend and more in this week’s issue.

he world is coming to an end.’ How many times have we heard this before? For the most part,

we were not all convinced this time, even though Michael Lewis’ Religious Hardtalk special certainly gave him a grand platform to try to convince Jamaicans that the rapture will begin would begin Friday evening at 6 p.m. Or was it 12 a.m. Saturday? Either way, the huge worldwide pre-Apocalypse earthquake never materialized. Perhaps many are still laugh-ing at him, but we do sympathize and feel as if he should now be taken to the nearest psychiatric ward.

Visa CanCellaTion ... againVisa cancellation again for prominent Jamaicans, only this time it is not that of a dance-hall artist, which seems to be the norm. Minister of Energy and Mining, James Robertson, confirmed that his and his wife’s visas have been cancelled by the United States government. Now everyone is shocked and won-dering what happened.

TRaCks and ReCoRdsNo, it’s not the Cham-pions Leagues finals nor it is the NBA Finals, so why is there a line to get

inside a sport bar? I guess it’s out with the old and in with the new, which leaves us to ponder if this hype can be sustained. Irrespective of the answer, Tracks and Records Sports Bar is the new hip hang out spot in Kingston now, so I guess Bolt is indeed all about setting records.

lyChees eVeRywheRe Lychees here, lychees there, lychees every-where! Never before in Jamaica have we seen lychees in such abundance. Can you say bumper crop? Lychees are not new to Jamaica, but it is the first time in years that we’ve seen them in such abun-dance. An agricultural expert has explained that lychee bears according to the coolness of the climate. So is this an indica-tion that we will have a cool summer? I think not.

opRah’s FaRewell speCTaCulaRIt is the end of an era, the farewell season of the Oprah Win-frey Show. If it has not taught us anything over the past 25 years, we have surely seen the in-fluence Winfrey has not just on American cul-ture but on the world. Celebrities and legends from various arenas came out to show their support, from Tom Hanks to Tom Cruise and Madonna. And we certainly can’t forget Beyonce’s killer performance of “Run the World (Girls)”.

he Internet is a vast, multi-dimensional landscape, full of useful information and activities for every member of the family, but it can also be a huge wasteland of

noise and dangerous pitfalls for children. So is the cell phone, which seems to be surgically attached to many youngsters’ hands. Children can be unwittingly exposed to porn, robbery and mayhem on the internet and let us not forget the phe-nomenon of ‘sexting’. We are living in the digital age, which requires even sharper parenting skills than our own upbring-ing demanded. Therefore, parents and guardians need to set boundaries and carefully monitor what their charges are al-lowed access to.

Television viewing. This is an oldie but goodie, still relevant even though children now appear to spend more time on the Internet than they do in front of the TV. Discuss with your child the kinds of programmes he is allowed to watch, based on rat-ings and his own level of maturity. You can also block off-limit channels to nullify the curiosity factor.

Cell phone usage. This is hard to monitor, especially when your child is not in your presence. However, you should discuss with your child how and when to use the phone and enforce necessary restrictions. Allow younger children to carry a cell phone for use only in case of emergency, such as sudden bouts of illness. “I think that too much can fly under a parent’s radar with these forms of communications and it worries me. It re-quires being super, super vigilant, and it can be hard to main-tain that level of defense,” says Jen Klein writer and mother of

three, who routinely reads her son’s emails and doesn’t allow him to text. It is entirely up to you to decide how much privacy you will allow and whether you are comfortable with searching your child’s phone and email.

The internet. It is fairly simple to block questionable web-sites on your home PC, but just as difficult to know what your child is doing when he accesses the Internet elsewhere. There are also various social media sites that are great for keeping in touch with friends, but can expose a child to danger. Again, it is important that you talk with older children about what to reveal about themselves in online profiles – no personal de-tails and no naughty pictures - and how to use his freedom of speech wisely. Just look at how many adults have lost their jobs or have been otherwise adversely affected due to reckless sta-tus updates and tweets. Many sites do have parental controls, especially those geared towards children. However, the major-ity does not, and inappropriate material often surface in pop-up ads and can even come up from innocent searches.

Overall, the importance of having proper conversations with your children about these issues cannot be overstated. This is, after all, the information age, so make sure your child always gets the right information from you first.
