MP CALGARY CENTREHON. KENT HEHR950 6 Ave [email protected], 403-244-1880www.KentHehrMP.ca

It has been over 100 days since I was appointed Minister of Veter-ans A airs and Associate Minister of National Defence. Each and every day I am honoured and proud to serve those who wear—or who have worn—our nation’s uniform.

The opportunity to work with my caucus colleagues from across Canada is rewarding, and being a strong voice for Calgary and Alberta at the cabinet table is a tremendous privilege and responsibility that I do not take lightly.

The Prime Minister has given me an aggressive mandate, one that I plan to fulfi ll through stronger relationships with veterans and the organizations that represent them.

During my fi rst days, I participated in a number of Veterans’ Week activities, including Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa. This special day was humbling and concluded a week of learning and listening. It reconfi rmed my commitment to ensuring that we get Veterans the care they need, when and where they need it.

Within the fi rst month, I travelled across the country to engage with Veterans and Veterans’ organizations, and held my rst Veterans’ Stake-holder Summit in Ottawa in December. Next, I travelled to Poland and Ukraine to meet our Canadian Armed Forces troops during the holi-days and to thank them for their service on behalf of all Canadians.

Veterans will once again be able to access services in o ces closed in recent years. And, we have already re-hired more than 175 front-line sta to provide more support to Veterans across Canada.

I know that times are tough for Alberta and Canada. In the fi rst 100 days as a government, we have quickly begun work on key campaign prom-ises that I believe will make a real diff erence in the lives of Canadians.

We have already reduced taxes to the middle class. This will put more money in to 9 out of every 10 Canadian pockets.

We have implemented a consultation process for pipeline proj-ects that allows for industry, communities, rst nations and peo-ple who are concerned about the environment to take part. I truly believe we are on a path to build public trust in our approach so that we can move forward in a thoughtful manner that will see success for our industry in the long run.

The Prime Minister confi rmed that $700 million in Infrastructure funds would start owing to Alberta in the weeks ahead. Those investments in projects identifi ed by our Provincial partners and their municipal partners will create thousands of jobs and gener-ate economic bene ts for our great province.

My fi rst 100 days have been exciting and I look forward to achiev-ing much more in the future. My door, and my mind, will always re-main open to the input and ideas of Canadians. We were elected on a mandate of real change, and part of that real change is a commit-ment to evidence based decisions and consultation with all of you.

MLA CALGARY CURRIEBRIAN MALKINSON

This month I would like to talk about one of the backbones of our city: Community Associations. These volunteer organiza-tions are run by our friends and neighbours, often acting as the voice of the community, and they bring us together as Calgarians.

Making the community a great place to live work and play is probably one of the most important things Community Asso-ciations do. People come together to create the kind of com-munity they want. We have stunning community gardens to enjoy, a variety of locally organized youth sports, seniors ac-tivities and several farmers markets, all thanks to Community Associations.

Working with the city, Community Associations are often those consulted rst on changes coming to the community. Whether that be a new school zone, community garden, or changes to zoning, Community Associations are the front line our communities have representing our local interests.

It never ceases to amaze me how much creativity, hard work and commitment I see from people, taking time out of their busy lives to strengthen the community around them. There’s the soccer coach who is so dedicated to their kids that, even if it means driving around playing taxi before and after games, the coach ensures that all the kids in his community have a chance to play. There are the people who tend to the commu-nity skating rinks and make their phone number available to neighbours, so that when problems arise, as they always do, the rst step of problem solving is kept local, with supportive friends and neighbours.

I try very hard to get out and participate in as many events that local Associations put on as I can. Recently I attended the Rosscarrock AGM. I’ve been skating and tasting delicious popcorn at the winter festivals in Glenbrook, Glendale and Westgate, and I’ve sat in the basement and had a beer in Killarney Glengarry with veterans from the legion.

If you have an event taking place in your community and might be interested in having me out, do not hesitate to give the o ce a call at 403-246-4794.

I am proud to represent so many communities supporting one another in such great ways. I would like to sincerely thank all of the hard working and talented community organizers we have here in Calgary Currie.

The Sentry BoxSunalta CommunityWhen bought in 1980 by Gordon Johansen, The Sentry Box was 250 sq.ft and it fulfi lled his dream to own a game store. Two moves to increasingly larger locations in the Marda Loop weren’t enough and, in 1994, he moved it to the current location in Sunalta where it became the World’s Largest Game Store with 13,000 sq.ft of space. Ahead of the times in the game industry, he included 3000 sq.ft. of com-munity and gaming space.

Twenty one years later, the store is a hotbed of community gaming activity. Events run every night but Sunday and many special events occur. There has been a wedding, sev-eral receptions, charity events, several documentaries and even movie scenes. The Sentry Box has won both the Game Manufacturers Association’s prestigious Game Store of the Year and Best Store Design awards. It has grown from having a mix of 10 full and part time staff to the current mix of 30, not counting the many event judges and volunteers who help out during events and open gaming nights. Most days there are 50-70 people enjoying a relaxing and fun evening for free (or a minimal cost so that prizes can be handed out).

During the last three years, the interior has been undergo-ing major renovations to the decor as board games and geek culture have increased in popularity. There is every-thing from the 40’ wall of Egyptian hieroglyphics as you en-ter, WW II ruins in the historical section, and a Steampunk castle on the mezzanine walls. A 7’ Darth Vader looms over the main oor while winners of events may get their picture taken on a full size replica of the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones fame. Customers from all over the world drop in just to see the store after hearing about it from friends and seeing pictures online.

Part of the draw is the selection of products. With over 100,000 di erent games, books, and miniatures in stock, it has both current releases and many older items that can be found in no other stores.

Boardgames, role-playing games, collectible card games (like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon), miniatures, and books are some of it’s main areas of focus. These cover history, fan-tasy, and science ction and even include a selection of gi-

ant amoebas. After having children of his own, Gord added a children’s games section to indoctrinate the youth of tomor-row into game culture. A Science Fiction and Fantasy book section of over 7000 titles rounds out the store’s selection.

The recent popularity of European style boardgames has led to many new customers as people search for quality games that are both competitive and fun. These are di erent from the old standards like Risk and Monopoly where you can quickly lose and then spend hours watching your friends play on. Eurogames (as they are called), usually play in 30-90 minutes with everybody playing for the whole time and the winner unknown until the last turn. Unlike the older style games, these appeal to all genders and have changed the demographics of the store to a much more balanced ratio.

While there are too many games for even the sta to know them all, the knowledge provided is one of the store’s strengths. While they might not know everything, it is rare they have not heard something about a game or won’t be able to nd out about it for you.

The best way to learn is to come to one of the evening events of course. Gamers are some of the most inclusive people in the world and are happy to show you what they love. The same applies to Gord. After 36 years in the business, it is still a labour of love for him and he both reads SF&F novels and plays games several times a week with friends.
