Community News & Events

We're getting ready for our first ever food and drink festival week, 31 October to 6 November. www.thenewforest.co.uk/newforestfoodfest Cllr Barry Rickman, Leader of NFDC, said. "The festival will showcase the unique food and drink offer and attract visitors to stay in what is usually the first quiet week of our tourism and visitor season. "The area's impressive array of food and drink businesses makes up part of our strong local business community, and I am very proud to be supporting the industry with what is sure to be an enjoyable event." Fifteen themes, including Glorious Game and Roaring Fires, Cheese and the Forest Larder and The Vegetarian Forest Feast will be headlined by a range of events including a six-course 'Tastes of the Forest' menu at Chewton Glen and the 'Six Sausages Dishes' and chef's challenge at the New Forest Inn. There'll be a Mad Hatters' tea party for young foodies, as well as a talk on The Very English Afternoon Tea at the Montagu Arms Hotel and events connected to Pannage pig, forest drinks including our wines, beers and ciders, sweets and chocolates, foraging, pies, the great New Forest Breakfast, charcuterie, plus fish and seafood from our 40-mile coast. Free events include a Living and Learning Event at Beaulieu Road Pony Sales yard on Wednesday November 2 where locals and visitors can learn all about the forest's rich history and cultural heritage - followed by some scrumptious outdoor food cooked by top chefs. There'll also be a producer's market and chef demonstrations at Brockenhurst College on Sunday November 6. Anthony Climpson, Destination Manager and Chairman of the New Forest Food & Drink Festival Week said: "Local menus have long included venison, and the New Forest's unique Pannage pork - and this made us realise that we needed to celebrate our food and drink heritage a little more formally. "The festival week will not only be a showcase of the epicurean delights of our magical destination, but also a celebration of the distinctive

First New Forest Food and Drink Festival personalities and characters who grow, cook and serve our fabulous forest food and drink." As research shows that more people are holidaying and travelling in the UK, a trip across the country to discover an interesting new area, try some locally-sourced dishes or learn from a Michelin-starred chef has become increasingly attractive to the British public. The winners of a calendar competition have been picked to find the best photos of Hampshire County Council’s country parks. The twelve winners were chosen by a panel of judges from 70 entries, with photos of butterflies, birds and stunning landscapes across Queen Elizabeth County Park, Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, Manor Farm and Country Park, Royal Victoria Country Park, Lepe Country Park, Staunton Country Park and Farley Mount.

Councillor Andrew Gibson, Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “Congratulations to all the winners. The standard of competition was very high, which made it a difficult task for the judges. I’m so pleased that our beautiful and award-winning country parks have proved to be such inspirational landscapes for photographers from across the county.”

Among the winning images was a reed warbler by Fiona Bryan, from Whitchurch, who has been volunteering at Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve for six years, guiding visitors on bird watching at the 369-acre site.

Fiona said: “I am so pleased to be a winner. It takes a bit of patience to photograph wildlife but it's worthwhile when you get a good image. It's a lovely place for people to see great wildlife all year round. I hope my photograph inspires people to visit.”

Beth Barker age 10 from Hordle sat down with her family on New Year’s Day – as they always do – to discuss ambitions for the year ahead.

Beth said she wanted to climb a mountain in memory of her late teacher Mrs Arias and raise £100 for Oakhaven Hospice where Mrs Arias – formerly of Hordle Primary

In September, Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve started offering something new to visitors. Fully qualified Forest School staff led a 6 week Forest School programme for children aged 2-5 with their parents. During the 6 weeks children used saws to make wooden pendants, used fire strikers, cooked bread, crumpets, marshmallows and popcorn on the campfire, whittled sticks, made flags, played in the mud kitchen, made dens, used ropes to make pulleys, read maps, used binoculars, looked for bugs and observed wildlife.

One of the parents attending the first programme said “I love coming to Forest School because we do so many different activities in the woods we would never think of doing ourselves”.

Many of the activities on offer are linked to the different seasons and wildlife, and involve plenty of exploring, discovering, creating, constructing, playing and learning in the woods. Children choose what they want to do, and have the same resources available to them

each week as well as some different ones. They also help to risk assess the woods and activities with the adults throughout the sessions. In this way they develop their practical skills, confidence, independence, self-esteem and social skills so much more, all in a safe outdoor environment.

These 6 week programmes are now running every term, the next one starting on Monday 31st October, and the next on Monday 9th January, 9.30am-11.30am or 12.30pm-2.30pm. The programme costs £39 for 6 weeks.

"As we are such a big family it is very rare we can all be together as a family under one roof, so this holiday will give us time to bond and enjoy each other’s company at this sad time in a relaxing environment. Thank you to Peter Cooper and Yellowstone Environmental Solutions for giving us this opportunity."Unfortunately, just a few short weeks before their holiday, David sadly passed away. Natalie, her mum, and 5 other members of the family are currently spending their week at Wessex Cancer Trust’s holiday home in New Milton, giving them some much needed time together to enjoy a holiday with Jennifer and reminisce about many happy memories with David.

Peter Cooper Motor Group, one of the South Coast’s largest car dealerships have united with Yellowstone Environmental Solutions to mark Wessex Cancer Trusts 35thanniversary by sponsoring holidays for families living with cancer.

Cancer is something that affects the whole family and so Wessex Cancer Trust’s holiday homes, located in Poole and New Milton, can provide a place to relax and enjoy some much needed time together. It can be very difficult to get travel insurance when you have cancer, so people are often unable to go abroad. Or many want to stay close to home in case they need to go into hospital.

Darren Cooper, Managing Director of Peter Cooper Motor Group, said: "As a family owned business we fully appreciate the importance of family, and unfortunately as one that has also been touched by cancer, we fully appreciate the heartache and stresses it causes to all those affected. For us to be able to unite with a fellow company Yellowstone Environmental Solutions and provide local families going through such difficulties a bit of respite is an absolute honour and pleasure. As a local business we always try to support our local community and when

The Coyle family were the second beneficiaries chosen to receive a free family holiday. Natalie started visiting Wessex Cancer Trust’s Centre in Cosham in November 2015 when, after five years of suffering with cancer, her father David was given the devastating news that he had just a short time left. Only one month later Natalie’s mother, Jennifer, was taken into hospital and sadly diagnosed with bone cancer, which was also terminal. Natalie said: "We have gone to the Centre as a family on many occasions and I have regular counselling and treatment. Mum and Dad are too ill to go now. They are both at home at the moment, but my Dad is feeling really poorly so we wanted to get away to spend some time together as a family without going too far away."

Wessex Cancer Trust came up with this initiative it was one we wanted to be involved in."The first beneficiary of this fund, Rachel Barnett, said: "My Cancer journey has been difficult for the whole family. My partner has been doing lots of overtime and I’ve been at the hospital twice a week so we haven’t been able to spend much time as a family. We are all really looking forward to spending quality time together and doing normal things like swimming and just having fun. Thank you to Peter Cooper and Yellowstone Environmental Solutions for making this possible."

In an earlier editorial, we touched upon mitigating inheritance tax. There are some estates in which it is simply not possible to avoid paying inheritance tax, perhaps due to the testator’s lack of available reliefs, large estate and beneficiaries who are not exempt from inheritance tax. Only spouses and charities currently enjoy an inheritance tax free status.

It is however possible to reduce the rate at which inheritance tax is payable. By giving 10% or more of your estate to charity you can reduce the inheritance tax rate from 40% to 36%.

When the inheritance is calculated, particular attention is paid to whether the estate falls into separate components:-

• The survivorship component – where the property is held in joint tenants (usually but not always with a spouse or partner)

• The settled property component – where there is an interest in possession e.g. a life interest in the property

• The general component – anything else except for gifts given with a reservation of benefit (where the donor of the gift still enjoys the use of the asset)

Should you wish to take advantage of this rate reduction, it is important that your Will is carefully

drafted to ensure that 10% of the entire estate is gifted and not just a single component. Otherwise, you may find that the gift to charity falls short of the required 10% and your estate does not attract the 36% reduced inheritance tax rate on the taxable estate.

If this occurs, all may not be lost, as it is possible for your executors to amend your Will via a deed of variation within two years of your death to make the saving. However, it is always better to consider the matter yourself and get the paperwork right in order to save time and worry at a later date.

Christmas is not far away and the usual questions abound? Who shall we invite? Do we need to accept that invitation? Who will we offend if we do our own thing?

Relationships are difficult at the best of times but at Christmas there is also the heightened sense of the hurt many of us carry to do with past Christmases. We are now grown up so why can we not do our own thing?

Firstly we need to listen to our own heart. Who would we like to be with and why? What is stopping us doing this? Are we afraid of hurting some people? Would we be made to feel guilty if we choose not to accept certain invitations? Do we end up just cooking and looking after the same group of people even if we feel we are ignored, taken for granted, expected to do things in a set way perhaps because this is how it has always been done?

Relationships can be such a complicated tangle and it can seem difficult to know where to start to unravel the mixed up and tangled emotions. It might seem easier to leave things at they are and put up with another Christmas or family gathering, another unspoken hurt that we bear but do not want to speak up about.

Who will we invite this Christmas? - The tangled web of relationships!

Early this year I suffered severe lower back pain. I could not get out of bed or walk without a stick which I put up with for 3 months. I then saw an advert in a local magazine advertising acupuncture etc. I range and spoke to Dr Yan. She was very helpful and gave me an appointment.

She has treated me for 5 sessions and from day one I began to feel better. I now feel completely free of pain and able to walk without problems. I found Dr Yan to be very knowledgeable and quickly finds the trouble spots. She is very firm in her treatment and is keen to give advice and encouragement.

I would suggest if you need help, make an appointment with Dr Yan. I am very pleased with the treatment she gave me and I thank her most sincerely.

Another happy customer Mr Ray Humphrey

Sometimes, for reasons best known to the greater universe, a friend will offer a suggestion to a problem that will seem ridiculous and pointless, but actually turns out to be the best piece of advice you ever received. This is exactly what happened

to one dressage rider after her trusty horse of many years started to be less responsive to her commands and her standard of dressage went rapidly downhill. Mentioning her predicament to a friend, Jo Simmonds, 49, was surprised to hear that her solution might lie in visiting renowned chiropractor, Nicholas Richmond of The Chiros Clinic in Andover, Hampshire. With much scepticism and absolutely no pain or physical abnormalities of any kind, Jo made an appointment to see Nick, who had already helped a number of professional show jumpers, event riders and international dressage riders with similar problems. When she first entered Nick’s practice, Jo felt somewhat foolish explaining that she was there because her horse was not behaving in its usual manner or reacting correctly to her commands. Nick soon put her at ease and after his initial assessment he explained that Jo’s pelvis was heavily tilted down on the right side, due to a weak musculature on her right side, which meant that when sitting astride her horse, Jo was leaning to the right, without noticing, thinking she was sitting up straight. As a result, Jo’s horse was getting an input from her to turn right when in fact she actually wanted him to go forward or left. Another aspect of the pelvis tilting was that the corresponding ankle and leg was clattering against the horse, reinforcing the unintended command to turn. When it came to introducing a command to the horse to turn left, Jo found she was having to pull on a huge amount of extra rein to get the horse to turn. Under these circumstances it was impossible for the horse to understand the rider and therefore get the precision they needed for the standards required in the dressage arena. Although Nick has no experience in riding at all, his knowledge and interest in biomechanics (the study of the skeletal system and how it moves), meant that he knew, without asking, that she had an extra hole in her stirrup leather and how her horse had been behaving, just by looking at her. Amazed, Jo realised that this had not been a waste of time after all! Nick was able to realign Jo’s pelvis and spine and gave her some corrective exercises to complete at home to keep them in place. When Jo came back for her second treatment she was delighted to tell Nick that she had her old, trusty horse back who

was doing everything that he should do because Jo was now able to give the correct instructions and commands to her horse. Before her appointment with Nick, her horse could only do a half pass one way, now he could do both directions again with ease. All of the problems that Jo had found with communicating with her horse were corrected after just one session with Nick. When watching dressage, the bond between horse and rider is a wonder to behold. It makes sense therefore, for the link between the two to go beyond the arena and into the realms of health. If a horse is musculo-skeletally healthy but the rider is not and they continue to ride together, the horse will eventually become imbalanced. Likewise, if the horse is out of alignment, this will transgress to the rider over time. In order to have the best possible performance from your horse, both you and your horse must be as mechanically sound as possible. This applies to all riding activities, from dressage to hacking out. Another client of Nick’s, who is a professional dressage rider, always makes an appointment with Nick two days before each and every event. Taking this line further, it is therefore also essential to get your horse checked for musculo-skeletal misalignment too.All riding is about strength, balance and posture. In order to get these right, a visit to a chiropractor such as Nick is essential, to ensure the rider is able to communicate effectively with the horse when in the saddle.Nick started The Chiros Clinic in 2003 and has over 20 years of Chiropractic experience. He is also qualified as a Sports Therapist and has qualifications in many different chiropractic techniques including McTimoney. The Chiros Clinic has just taken on another practitioner, James Harrison, to help with the ever-increasing practice, which is also home to osteopath, Elenor Andrews, who is also qualified to treat animals. Other complimentary treatments are also available, including reflexology and nutrition. For more information, visit www.chirosclinic.com or call 01264 324924.

Maintaining independence for people with mobility problems, stairs often are one of the biggest obstacle they’ll face if they want to remain in their own homes. Stair lifts are the answer for many.

With engineering skill and technology advances, stairlifts are becoming more available to suit all if not most styles of staircase. There will still be limitations based on the users dimensions that’s why it is best to seek advice face-to-face with experienced stairlift companies who can advise on an individual bases.

Hampshire Mobility Services are proud to be an Authorised Stannah dealer, Stannah are known worldwide and are trusted experts in producing high quality British made stairlifts for many years to suit both straight and curved staircases.

As with all stairlifts they should comply with the British and European standard (BS EN), all stairlifts Hampshire Mobility Services do comply. With its narrower rail profile, the lift’s track is only 6” (150mm) from the wall giving more space for the taller or a less flexible person to travel up and down the stairs. The easy folding seat and arms ensure that the staircase is left fairly unobstructed and with many different seat styles and colours the Stairlift will blend in well with its surroundings. The seat height is adjustable on installation which will ensure that the user can mount and dismount the lift with ease or transfer to a wheelchair or to a walking frame which are the same height.

Being a battery powered lift, which is constantly recharging wherever it is left on the stair case, you will still be able to use the lift for approximately 20 trips during a power outage to the property. Effortless arm controls and two wall mounted remotes mean that the lift can be used by users with hand or gripping problems. The stairlift is installed to the stair tread not the wall by four of five discrete brackets giving strength to the system allow a safe working load of up to 25stone (160kg). As standard we offer a 2 year warranty and 2 years servicing on all new Stannah stairlifts.

Stairlift are sometimes just the beginning of the realisation that a little help can regain independence. It doesn’t have to be as major as stairlift, something as simple as a grab rail, a half step or a sock aid may be all that is needed to help realise or no longer be a ‘burden’.

We have a full comprehensive range of mobility aids, wheelchairs, walking frames and rollators, bath lifters and shower seat are always in stock. We have a fully working straight & curved stairlift also a range of rise and recline chairs which you can see and try before you make any decisions either on your own or with your family. We are conveniently located in Romsey town centre next to disabled parking at Lortemore Place Car Park. Alternatively we offer a home visits, all are backed up with a free written and no obligation quotation.

We were lucky enough to interview Stu…

“The end of the 2016 season was great, not only ending it with a double win at Silverstone in September but it was my first ever win on the Silverstone F1 circuit. 2016 saw me become the most successful driver in TTRS for the second year in a row with a total of 7 wins, which is 1 more than in 2015. The BMW M3 has been very reliable all year only once not finishing on the podium, which is a credit to the team for their help. Thanks once again to Bartley BMW for their ongoing support and sponsorship”.

“The team has also taken Harry Goodman to not only his first ever win in PBMW but 5 wins in 2016 and has coached Jason Dzenis in the 205 which has seen his driving improve massively and also ended with him winning in his class twice at Silverstone”.
