Summer is finally here and it’s finally time to both discover and fully enjoy the finer side of life. But why roam so far afieldwhen there are great things nearby?

In fast-moving times like these, more and more people look to find happiness on their lovingly constructed balconies, inviting patios or in their individually designed gardens. They find it in Asian gardens where yin and yang let positive energies flow freely. Or on patios with wooden decking, which can be easily converted into islands of well-being by planting bamboo or integrating foliage into the patio flooring. And

last but not least on balconies, which find a whole new meaning when decked out with furniture which was once discarded but now newly painted and filled with your favourite plants and flowers.

So, whether on balconies, patios or in the garden, whether with the whole family or with friends – the trend is to get some fresh air, and is closely followed by the longing for freedom, enjoyment and a sense of security. People breakfast, brunch, barbeque, picnic, celebrate and play together. In large gardens, they also enjoy bathing and camping. Where possible, the

latter activities are enjoyed close to a water feature which can be constructed with little effort: dig a hole, insert a standard plastic basin and submersible pump, attach a hose, feed the hose through a pre-bored stone or clay ball, fill the basin with water, attach the basin lid and the water feature pieces, fix in place with sand, decorate with pebbles, turn on the power and hey presto: a piece of art which turns any garden into a source of inspiration. But even those with less space to enjoy don’t have to renounce the feeling of well-being which

comes from being outdoors. Quite the contrary. According to trend researchers, there is a clear development in the ‘green region’, which focuses less on lavish garden and swimming pond layouts and more on criteria such as vitality and a sense of security – values which need little space to be achieved. Sometimes even a hammock hidden behind the bamboo on a balcony is quite sufficient. Or a home-made bathtub flowerbed on that once lifeless patio.

So let your fantasies run wild and enjoy your garden your way.

Refreshingly cool.the Eternal City. However, although the runners all eventually took to their heels, ice cream was yet to survive. According to ancient history, it was completely forgotten but luckily, when the medieval crusaders returned with a fruit syrup and snow mixture, a new ‘ice age’ began.

...to granita!

This Italian crushed ice drink is still available today – even if it is now bought from the good old ice cream vans which play their music through the streets, exciting all children. Otherwise however, the world of ice cream has totally evolved. The fruit syrup and snow mixture has become sorbet and is availablein all imaginable varieties. One of the most popular of these is granita – a Sicilian speciality usually made with sugar syrup and freshly squeezed lemon juice. The mixture is gradually frozen while being repeatedly stirred, creating a snow-like concoction, which is then served in a glass with a straw or a spoon and normally

Summertime is ice cream time – and it has been for over 5000 years

Truthfully now: a summer without ice cream is like a seaside holiday without the sea. Pretty unthinkable hey! There was however a time when people had to survive without ice cream, ice lollies, granita and so on. That is, until approximately 3000 BC when the rulers of ancient China discovered the refreshing flavour and immediately built up stocks of their precious new tasty discovery.

from glacial ice...

2500 years later, ice cream reached Europe, initially in a form which the Greek poet and inventor Simonides of Keos described as “glacial snow with ingredients such as fruits, honey or rose water”. Glaciers are tasty - the ancient Romans agreed, as without further ado they sent a number of fast runners into the Alps to collect snow and bring it back to Solena

accompanied by a brioche. A refreshingice cocktail which,on hot summer days, you can even enjoy for breakfast.

a cool tip...

You can of course substitute the lemon juice for a whole range of other core ingredients such as pineapple, honeydew melon, raspberry, strawberry or blood orange juice. Or try using ground roasted almonds, coffee, or simply anything which will create the flavour that you and your loved ones feel like at the time. The reward of a delicious granita is always worth a bit of experimentation, especially when preparation is so simple and takes only 30 minutes (excluding the 3-5 hour freezing period).

the finale

is drawing close. While in the bar, you’ve just drawn up a plan for the rest of the evening. Or should we say, you’ve drawn up your dinner plans. An alluring plan centred around a tantalising pasta recipe and already making your mouth water. Time for the Italian restaurant? Not at all. Your friend’s got an empty pad. And what

you save on the restaurant, you can spend later in the evening. After all, your friend has proven enough times that she’s great at conjuring up new and creative gluten-free pasta dishes from scratch.

the encore

takes you into the early hours of the morning. With good wine and a fabulous atmosphere you chat, laugh and dream away. About your next feel-good day with the girls, which you would also happily extend to a whole weekend.

Be honest now: when was the last time you thought about yourself and only yourself? Has it really been that long already? Then have we got something for you! An ‘instruction manual’ for the perfect day of pleasure and relaxation. For a day like no other. A day on which everything finally revolves around you, your best friends and all your needs. Sounds promising? It is. We promise!

Your alarm clock goes off

No need to panic. Remember? It’s Friday. Your day, which you took off especially for you. Relax. You’ve still got plenty of time. So, feel free to have another stretch and greet the day with your broadest smile. Then maybe give the girls a quick call to check whether brunch is at 10am or 10.30am. But please: keep it quick – you still need a little time for yourself and your breathing exercises.

Breathe in the day

The bathroom calls, but it can wait. Now’s the time to breathe. Sit up straight and breathe deeply, in and out. Correct breathing ensures a steady production of transmitters and should this have been disrupted, restores the balance. You will feel more awake because in our everyday lives we often breathe too shallowly (especially when stressed) and after a while that has a draining effect.

five minutes of styling

All done? Excellent. Then you can calmly ask yourself the all important question: what am I going to wear? Ideally, you should choose something which not only reflects the summer, but also your good mood. How about a brightly coloured shirt with a smart suit? Or maybe you’d prefer jeans, a jacket and trainers? Whatever you decide, it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes. After all, it would be a shame if it did as it’s not only your friends who are waiting for you, but also an entire day of relaxation and fun.

Brunch

was delicious. Especially the fresh strawberries and the crispy sheep’s cheese salad. You’re in a real celebratory mood and feel like doing something crazy. Get a new haircut, new clothes, new shoes? Why not? And why not get them all? Then you could all go to the nearest wellness or beauty salon: you with your new platforms, your friend with a trendy leather bag and your other friend with a new haircut and the delicious pasta recipe which the nice waiter gave you at brunch.

the budget

Running low? No problem. Remember, you’ve already done loads and had great fun. So now you can hit the brakes a little on your spending. But not on your fun! After all, a whole evening still awaits you. And the best way to enjoy it is to head straight to a cocktail bar. After all, it’s happy hour: the best time to enjoy a delicious Caipirinha or a classic Martini.

also extremely advanced and its influences and remains can still be seen today at numerous locations around Malta and its small sister islands of Comino and (especially) Gozo. Malta will conquer you too: thanks to the Blue Grotto (Malta) and the Island of Calypso (Gozo), Malta is not only a diver’s paradise, but also a haven for surfers, kiters, sailors and ... actors? Yes, you read that correctly. The small island has already been the setting for major Hollywood productions such as Gladiator and Troy. However, your chances of running into Russell Crowe or Brad Pitt during your trip to Malta are slim at most as the island offers little privacy for stars.

our tip for malta: go to gozo!

On Malta’s even smaller sister island of Gozo, located approximately 25 minutes away, the situation is totally different. Green pastures and

magical bays such as the Ramla Bay are just waiting to pamper you with 300 days of sunshine per year, golden sand and a turquoise sea. Gozo also offers a complete colour contrast to its mother island This is because Gozo has always been the more fertile island and the breadbasket of Malta. The old granaries still stand today. They have been lovingly restored and, with their green courtyards and hidden pools, act as welcome oasises for relaxation and refreshment. The perfect end to a trip to Gozo is definitely to climb the citadel’s fortress wall – the view is amazing! You can see across the fields, golden in the light of the sunset, and out over the tops of the shimmering little cream-coloured houses. In short: you can see the whole island, popularly (and with good reason) known as ‘Vanilla Island’.

In a land before time

Malta is a small paradise for anyone who wants to walk in the footsteps of thousands of years of history. But also for those looking for something else. On top of all the impressive relics of past cultures, this subtropical Mediterranean island also offers surfers, kiters and sailors a plethora of reasons to discover Malta.

a small island with great treasures Malta has an emotional history. Did you already know that Malta is home to the oldest free-standing piece of cult architecture in the world? The megalithic structure constructed in 4000 BC is even older than both Stonehenge and the Gizeh Pyramids, just less famous. The megalithic culture which created this structure was

“Of course it takes it out of you when you have to control the board, the kite and yourself at speeds of up to 60km/h, but when you rise 40 or 50 metres up into the air, it’s all worth it.” ... Just a bit of Mario’s exciting feel free story...

In our spring newsletter, Stijn, the young professional cyclist from Belgium, highlighted the many joys of cycling. He told YourLife his whole personal story.

The coeliac condition: new territoryIt was only last winter when I first found out that I was gluten-intolerant; it was brought to light by a blood test. My doctor then explained to me which food I should avoid in order to feel better. At first I felt uncertain and after numerous conversations

with other coeliacs, I decided to consult a specialist, but he merely confirmed the coeliac diagnosis. It was a real kick in the teeth, both for me and for my family. I had never before had problems with either my digestion or my body. Or at least I had always believed that the symptoms I showed were

just normal for me. I had constant vitamin and iron deficiencies but I always thought: “you are training hard and often, that must be the reason.”

Months laterNow, a few months later, I can feel the difference. I have more energy and feel stronger. I am even more active and am no longer in any pain. Even my blood levels have returned to normal.

My dietPersonally, I like to start my day with toasted Schär Pan Carré bread; to add a bit of variety, my menu might include muesli and sometimes I allow myself pancakes. My main meal often comprises of pasta, which I love in all varieties. Really, I’ve tried every kind there is but I still can’t decide which one’s my favourite; the main thing is that it’s pasta. When I want to relax, I love sitting in front of the television with a cup of coffee. And something sweet goes very nicely with it: Solena cereal biscuits, Wafers alla vaniglia or al cacao and Biscotti con cioccolato are some of my current favourites. I first ran into Schär products on the internet. As a top athlete, a balanced diet is an essential part

of my lifestyle and I found that Schär offers an extensive product range with a wide choice of gluten-free products for every day consumption – whether training or competing. For more energy!

“Get cycling... for me, that means nearly every day. My racing bike has become my constant companion – and I’m glad! I would advise anyone who wants to stay fit to take up cycling – to whatever extent you are happy with. The important thing is to get fresh air and exercise.

Have fun cycling! Let’s go! Stijn

A certificate for us –

guaranteed safety standards for you

In times when food scandals are ever more prevalent in the media and fill end consumers with insecurity, quality assurance is something which can not be overemphasised. It is however possible to take further client-orientated steps and make quality assurance your main focus, just like Schär has been doing for years. That’s why we’ve been singled-out and awarded the British Retail Consortium (BRC) certificate – marking the highest international standard for food safety.

a simple principle...

Complete traceability of products, maximum transparency for consumers and top quality standards throughout the entire production and marketing chain. Since the new EU Regulation 178/2002 of 1 January 2005 entered into force, food industries have had to meet

greater requirements, something which Schär is more than doing. With the highest BRC score and standardised identification and communication systems, in short: with a quality assurance which screens and monitors the entire production process. All Schär prodcuts can be traced back along the entire logistics chain – from the raw materials to the product delivered to the consumer. And if complaints do ever occur, the use-by date is quite enough to get to the bottom of them. But what exactly does that mean for you as the end consumer?

...for triple the safety!

Use-by dates have long been more than merely a way of showing how long food is fresh for. They are a key element for the complete traceability of our products. Compete, because the process contains three steps – from the raw material, to the

10 yourlife

production, to the market. In addition to total safety however, we also offer you a level of service which is unrivalled in the gluten-free market. Every complaint is immediately forwarded to our quality assurance department where (based on the use-by date) we can examine a model of the products process. The result of this examination is directly implemented in our product optimisation. An understanding of quality which can not only be seen, but can also be tasted. You see: for Schär, the best is currently good enough to offer you the highest standards of both quality and safety.

Accept our offer and provide us with constructive criticism. We are happy to receive any tip or suggestion which helps us improve our quality and your safety.

Do you try to avoid fat to save as many calories as possible? Fat is an essential nutrient for a healthy body.

finding the right fats

Fat provides your body with energy (9 kcal per g) and essential fatty acids. It also absorbs and transports the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and carries flavour and aroma additives. You should therefore produce 25-30% of your daily energy from the fat consumed as a part of your diet. In doing so however, you should pay attention to the type of fat as there are major differences in the quality of them.

Vegetable or animal

Animal fats consist primarily of saturated fats – with the exception of fish. Vegetable oils are mainly made up of unsaturated fatty acids, meaning that, for the most part, you should choose these over animal fats. Olive oil, rape seed oil, corn oil and sunflower oil are especially recommended.

No need to be scared of fat

ask the Dietician

hydrogenated or non-hydrogenated

Vegetable fats and oils can be hydrogenated or non-hydrogenated. Non-hydrogenated fats include not only the range of vegetable oils but also all the vegetable fats which are naturally saturated, e.g. palm fat and coconut oil. Hydrogenated fats are vegetable oils which have been solidified through a number of chemical processes to produce a more saturated form. This process also increases the shelf life of such fats. Sometimes however, undesired trans fatty acids are also created. These raise ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol levels and lower ‘good’ HDL cholesterol levels in your blood.

Schär only uses top quality raw materials, meaning that we constantly endeavour to use vegetable oils such as sunflower oil (which contains a high quantity of vitamin E) and non-hydrogenated vegetable fats for the production of our products as this is the best way for us to acheive premium nutritional quality using the latest technology.
