Dream: Every question answered, every story told. Mission: To bring citizens closer to investigative journalists, and enable them to collaborate on finding answers to the questions they have. Vision: We believe in the power of crowds. By building upon the knowledge, recources and societal embeddings of the crowd, together we are able to become something bigger than corporates, even something bigger than governments. 3 Problems that we want to solve: 1) DECREASING PRODUCTION: With growing competition of online media, news needs to be faster and should stick to the ‘News Pulse’ concerning the issues of the day. At most newspapers and editorial boards, there is little to no time left for journalists to intensively investigate important other leads. This growing problem is becoming critical, especially on a local level. In the Netherlands, local newspapers do not have any departments left for investigative journalism. Who is going to investigate the issues in your home town, when there are no journalists left to do it? 2)NO PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT: Newspapers and editorial boards still see themselves as mass communication channels. Sending to many, not receiving any. However, we live in 2014. The internet has shown that crowds are able to mobilize fast and structured. Why isn’t there any platform that enables crowds to organize around important investigative journalism topics? Their should be a bottom up movement, whereby each individual can give input and the multitude is able to address important issues through journalism. 3) UNEMPLOYMENT: Each year, almost 200 students in the Netherlands graduate in a masters in Investigative Journalism, all specialized in certain topics and with specific expertise. However, only the national newspapers hire a few new faces for investigation every year. What happens to all other graduates? It appears that they eventually end up as unemployed freelancers or copywriters. If there is a decrease in production of investigative journalism, but at the same time an increase of unemployment, something is going wrong! SOLUTION: We need to make a new eco-system for investigative journalism. An eco-system in which there is enough time and money allocated to produce more stories. A system in which citizens are able to mobilize around the themes an topics they find important. A system that matches the right questions to the right experts and freelancers in order to gather the answers thoroughly and efficient. This new eco-system is now in the making.
