Pre-conference Checklist
BEFORE:
Start thinking now about questions or concernsyou have. Write them down, and pray that you will
find solutions and guidance during conference. Do those things which invite the Spirit into your lifeso you will have a better understanding of what will
be taught. Have a willing heart, ready to obey the words ofthe prophets.
Be awake for conference. Get a good nightssleep. Prepare a notebook, pens, your scriptures, and
anything else you might need.
Pray for those who are assigned to speak.
DURING:
Attend or view all the sessions, including the priesthood session for
priesthood bearers or the General Young Women Meeting for women. Listen carefullynot just to the speakers, but to the prayers and songsalso.
Keep notes, including any inspiration you might receive duringconference.
Listen earnestly for answers to the questions you have. Between conference sessions, participate in activities that will invitethe Spirit.
AFTER:
Follow the prophets by obeying their counsel. Remember the inspiration you had while you were listening to conference. Make goals
right away to motivate you to do what you felt inspired to do. Reread the conference talks in the May Ensign. Studying the words of the prophets
a ain will help ou remember their most current counsel for ou.
Decide now to make general conference a priority in your life. Decide to listen carefully
and follow the teachings that are given. Listen to or read the talks more than once to better
understand and follow the counsel. By doing these things, the gates of hell will not prevail against you,
the powers of darkness will be dispersed from before you, and the heavens will shake for your good.

Those who will address us have sought heavens help and direction as they have preparedtheir messages. They have been impressed concerning that which they will share with us.
President Thomas S. Monson, New Era, Nov. 2009, 23
In order for YOU to get the most from Conference, write down one question (or more) that you would like an
answer to. As the speakers share their messages, listen for specific impressions or thoughts that help answer your
question(s).

Once conference is over, decide upon a way you can act upon that which you have heard. In order for themessages of general conference to change our lives, we need to be willing to follow the counsel we hear. The
Lord explained in a revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith that when ye are assembled together ye shall
instruct and edify each other, that ye may know how to act upon the points of my law and commandment.
But knowing how to act isnt enough. The Lord in the next verse said, Ye shall bind yourselves to act in all
holiness before me. This willingness to take action on what we have learned opens the doors for marvelous
blessings. - Paul V. Johnson, The Blessings of General Conference, Ensign, Nov 2005, 50.

The Conference Center is the largest religious indoor auditorium in theworld.
There are 21,000 seats in the main auditorium. The organ has 7,667 pipes. The Conference Center complex measures 1.5 million square feet (139,350
sq m) and covers 10 acres. There are 50,000 miles (80,450 km) of wire in the building, enough to wrap
around the equator twice. It took a little less than 1,000 days to build. Ground was broken on 24 July1997, and the Conference Center was dedicated on 8 October 2000.
The stage of the Conference Center can be changed according to theevent. For conference, the stage is set into tiers with chairs arranged for all theGeneral Authorities and for the general presidencies of the Primary, Young
Women, and Relief Society. Of course, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir takes itsplace under the new pipe organ, like the one in the Tabernacle on TempleSquare just across the street. To make the stage and podium look beautiful, flowers and greenery are
grown and arranged by those who take care of the Temple Square gardens. The flowers surround the podium, and greenery is placed on the tiers behindthe speakers. In addition, the Conference Center has a large foyer areawhere tables hold more bouquets of flowers.
The foyer of the Conference Center displays paintings, sculptures, and otherworks of art. The beauty of the materials and the arrangement of thefurnishings creates a feeling of reverence that those who attend conference
can enjoy. Many visitors enjoy attending conference in the Conference Center.Although it is one of the largest meeting places in the world, still only a small
fraction of those who wish to attend in person are able to. Tickets are issuedby stake presidents at no cost so people will not have to wait hours in longlines. Those without tickets can wait for seats not taken by ticket holders. The
atmosphere is happy and polite, with members dressed in their Sunday best,
most often with their families. It is not unusual for members to meet old friends.Volunteers greet those coming to conference and help them find their seats. The television cameras need to be in the prime locations in front and to thesides of speakers. But normal, bulky television cameras with cameramen
would block the view of many. The television cameras used in theConference Center are much less noticeable. They are small and operatedby remote control. Banks of hundreds of lights are also all handled by remote
from a control room at the back of the Conference Center. Inside the Conference Center is a big television center with control rooms
and recording rooms. From this station, the broadcast signal is sent to satellitesthat, in turn, send the signal around the world. To assist the speakers in reading parts of their talks while still being able to
look out at the audience, teleprompters (below, left) are provided. From thepoint of view of those watching the broadcast or those in the audience, the
teleprompters appear to be clear sheets of glass held by stands. But speakerscan easily see the words of their talks reflected onto the glass. Making sure that people hear conference in their own languages takeselaborate preparation. Conference is translated into 58 languages by
translators in soundproof booths, watching and listening to the speaker, andtranslating as the talk is being given. They have the help of language expertswho can quickly explain unusual phrases or words. Their translation is
recorded as well as broadcast, along with the video of the speaker.

Following the benediction we shall depart this great hall, turn off the lights, and lock the doors. You who are
listening across the world will switch off your television set or the radio or shut down the Internet. As we do so, I
would hope that we will remember that when all is over, Still stands thine ancient sacrifice, An humble and a
contrite heart (Hymns, no. 80). I hope that we shall ponder with subdued feelings the talks to which we have
listened. I hope that we will quietly reflect on the wonderful things we have heard. I hope that we will feel a little
more contrite and humble. All of us have been edified. The test will come in the application of the teachings
given. If, hereafter, we are a little more kind, if we are a little more neighborly, if we have drawn nearer to the
Savior, with a more firm resolution to follow His teachings and His example, then this conference will have been a
wonderful success. If, on the other hand, there is no improvement in our lives, then those who have spoken will
have in large measure failed. Those changes may not be measurable in a day or a week or a month. Resolutio
are quickly made and quickly forgotten. But, in a year from now, if we are doing better than we have done in
the past, then the efforts of these days will not have been in vain. We will not remember all that has been said,
but there will arise from all of this a spiritual uplift. It may be indefinable, but it will be real. As the Lord said to
Nicodemus, The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it
cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit (John 3:8). So it will be with the experienc
we have enjoyed. And perhaps, out of all we have heard, there may be a phrase or a paragraph that will stand
out and possess our attention. If this occurs, I hope we will write it down and reflect on it until we savor the depth
of its meaning and have made it a part of our own lives. President Gordon B. Hinckley, "An Humble and a
Contrite Heart", October 2000 General Conference.
