The Essentials of Prayer

November 7 – 13, 2016

Memory Verse “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.’” – Matthew 6:9

Tuesday, November 8, 2016 Matthew 26:36-43

Please write the answer for these questions:

How did Jesus pray?

How can prayer prevent us from falling into temptation?

Daily Declaration:

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” – Matthew 26:36 Daily Challenge: In Jesus’ toughest moments before He was betrayed He went with His disciples to pray. He was so troubled that He prayed the same thing before God three times – that God’s will would be done. Today, regardless of the situation, trust in the Lord with all your heart and acknowledge Him like Jesus did. The Bible says that if we do, He will make our paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6)! Daily Prayer: Lift up a prayer of dependence on the Lord as you place your trust in Him to be in control of everything.

Monday, November 7, 2016 John 15:5-8

Please write the answer for these questions:

What does Jesus say we can do if we remain in Him and His words remain in us?

What is the purpose of these promises (v. 8)? Daily Declaration: If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. – John 15:7 Daily Challenge: This week we will learn about prayer. In John 15, Jesus tells us that in order to bear fruit, we must abide – or remain in Him. Apart from Him, we can do nothing! Prayer is our main means of communicating with God. Today, spend an extra 5 minutes in prayer and in God’s word. Know Him. Enjoy Him. Love Him! Daily Prayer: Ask God to give you a heart that thirsts after Him more and more – a heart that desires to know Him more.

Wednesday, November 9, 2016 Luke 18:1-8

Please write the answer for these questions:

Why did Jesus tell this parable?

What does it say about God’s character when Jesus says He won’t keep putting off the cries of His people?

Daily Declaration: And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? – Luke 18:7 Daily Challenge: In this parable, Jesus explains how even unbelievers will do something for someone if they keep on bothering them about it. Earlier this week we read that God will do whatever we ask for if we remain in Christ. When you pray for something, believe that God is able to do it and willing to. Do you truly believe that God will answer your prayers? From this week’s lessons, He promises to do so – don’t give up if He doesn’t answer right away! Daily Prayer: Pray for God to do something radical. For the rest of the week, continue to pray for it and believe God will do it!

Saturday, November 12, 2016 Matthew 6:9-13

Please write the answer for these questions:

How does Jesus start off His prayer?

In comparison, when does Jesus pray for Himself? Why is this important?

Daily Declaration: “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,’ – Matthew 6:9 Daily Challenge: Jesus says that God’s very name is hallowed – worthy of honor and respect. Some people pray to look good in front of others by saying fancy words – others, just to get something off their chest. However, our God, the creator of Heaven and Earth still hears and is mindful of everyone’s prayers – even the silly ones! Today when you pray, pray with honor and respect for our great God! Daily Prayer: Pray that God will give you a heart that fears and honors Him!

Thursday, November 10, 2016 Matthew 6:5-6

Please write the answer for these questions:

Why do you think Jesus says we should not pray “on the street corners to be seen by others?”

Why do you think Jesus says we should pray in private? How might it benefit us?

Daily Declaration: But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. – Matthew 6:6 Daily Challenge: In these two verses, Jesus gives us a great picture of how we should pray. When we pray, we are not doing it to look holy in front of anyone. We pray so that we can talk to God and hear what He has to say to us! Today, continue to spend an extra 5 minutes alone with God in prayer and in His word. Daily Prayer: Pray that God will reveal Himself to you in an awesome way – and wait in His presence until He does!
