Our church and community has been shocked this week
by the tragic deaths of Tommy, Joyce and Jamie
Wellington. The Wellingtons died from injuries
sustained in a car accident Monday morning. Tommy
and Joyce were devoted Christians who loved First Baptist Church,
Lumberton and Robeson County. Tommy was a generous steward
of a beautiful voice. He comforted and inspired us as a soloist and
member of the Chancel Choir. Joyce was a devoted student of the
Bible and faithfully shared her wisdom as a teacher of the Ladies
Fellowship Class. Jamie was attending another church in the
county and was happiest when his children and grandchildren were
around him. We are a better church and community for the lives of
Tommy, Joyce and Jamie and are thankful for all the ways they
shared the light and love of Christ. I ask that you pray for the
Wellington family in the days ahead. They will need our support
and encouragement as they grieve their loss.
Each time I am confronted by a tragic death I think of James 4:14
which says What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a
little while and then vanishes. James is reminding us of the frailty
of life. We may live many years, but no matter the length of our
days, our lives are frail and pass quickly. In the larger context of
the passage (verses 13-17) James tells us that we have no guarantee
of tomorrow, therefore we should not be arrogant in planning our
lives. The message I take from James’ instruction is that we
should not postpone any good deed. He makes this point very
clear in the last verse of the text when he says, “Anyone, then, who
knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, commits sin” (v.17).
James was never one to mince words. If the Lord has put some
good deed on your heart then you need to do it and you need to do
it now. Don’t put off to tomorrow what the Lord has given you to
do today.
Jim Elliot was one of five missionaries who were killed in 1956 as
they tried to share the gospel with the Huaorani people of Ecuador.
Elliot is credited with several wise statements about the Christian
life and the one that I most admire is a statement that reflects the
wisdom of James 4. Elliot said “When it comes time to die, make
sure that all you have to do is die. The only way to make sure of
that is to live every day as though it were your last.” I do not
know if Tommy, Joyce and Jamie did all the good they knew to do
before they died, but I do know they were good people who had
put their trust in Jesus Christ, who loved their family and were
willing to do anything within their power to help people in need. I
also believe that, while their deaths were tragic, they have taught
us the valuable lesson that life is a vanishing mist and that this day
is the only day we have. I pray we all live long, fruitful lives and
die peaceful deaths, but let’s also make the most of everyday by
doing the good we know to do.
Grace and Peace,
David

“Living the Questions” John 6:60-69
For the past couple of weeks we have
focused on what was a difficult teaching
for the disciples of Jesus to understand.
Jesus has announced that he is the bread
of life that has come down from heaven.
The Jews who heard Jesus say this do
not understand. They begin to mutter to
themselves and then they argue with
Jesus. In today’s text the confusion
reaches the point that some of the
disciples walk away. As they leave,
Jesus asks the other disciples if they
were going to leave. Peter gives a great
answer when he says, “Lord, to whom
can we go? You have the words of
eternal life.” Peter is admitting that he
does not understand everything that
Jesus has said, but he knows that Jesus
is the source of life and wisdom. Peter’s
answer and faithfulness is a lesson that
the Christian journey involves Living
the Questions.
