0 LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

St. Bernard's too strong for MarcellinStraight kicking wins as Blues press Ormond

By GEORGE McTAGGARTSt. Bernard's just about wiped out Marcellin's chances of making the four

in their first season in the top section when they scored a 31-point win overthem at Elsternwick Park last week .

University Blues hit back strongly in the last quarter at Ormond and itwas only the home side's straight kicking (10 .3) that won it.

The situation in B Section is rather remarkable - the ninth team is onlya game outside the four. And looking at it the other way - the fourth teamis only one game clear of the relegation zone .

Three of the four top teams in this section were beaten last week, whenthe weather and the grounds were not much better than the week before .

Ormond kicked 9-1 to the Blues'5-4 in the first half but managedonly 1-2 after the interval . The back-lines were right on top in the thirdterm as Ormond added a goal andthe Blues a point - only two scoringshots for the quarter .

The Blues made a bid for victoryin the last quarter but Ormond heldon to win by 8 points .

Marcellin got to the front againstSt . Bernard's shortly before the inter-val and held the Saints well into thethird term. Then St . Bernard's brokeaway for 4 goals late in the quarterand Marcellin made no impression inthe run home .

Caulfield Grammar started wellagainst North Old Boys and wereonly 9 points down at half-time . Butthey did little after that and werewell beaten.

De La Salle overwhelmed Old Trin-ity and Coburg were never in itagainst University Blacks .

Ivanhoe continued their winning runwith a 5-goal victory over the leaders,Old Scotch, who now hold top placeonly on percentage .

Ivanhoe moved up to second (levelwith Scotch) as Old Paradians went

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - July 2,

down by 15 points to Reservoir, whodisplaced Monash Blues from the four,as Monash were beaten by Old Hail-eybury by 19 points .

AJAX had only 15 points to sparefrom Kew and Uni . High ran OldXaverians to 22 points.

Old Camberwell turned in a mis-erable performance against Old Brigh-ton, and dropped from second tofourth, while Elsternwick did evenworse at Alphington .

Beverley Hills beat North Bruns-wick by 14 points, CommonwealthBank got back into the four with a bigwin over Thornbury, (who slipped tosixth) and St. Bede's beat BulleenUnited by 17 points .

In the Juniors, Ivanhoe thrashed St .Bernard's and Old Scotch beat NorthOld Boys by more than four goals, but lost their place in the four toUniversity Blacks, whose big winover Ormond lifted their percentageabove Scotch's . There are now fourteams level for third .

Several teams in the fours in theReserve Sections were beaten, in mostcases by teams outside the top brac-ket.

PREVIEWINGT®®ATV GAIMNIES

A SECTIO NStill a long way to go but I have a feel-

ing the' "four" will remain "as is" byAugust 20th - that gap Caulfield and theBlacks have to make up may be too great .

Today University Blacks should have littletrouble winning the "Battle of the Varsity" .My prediction that the 'Blues would im-prove before the year's over gathered somefoundation last week, but I can't see themgetting the points today .

Ormond at home will crush Old Trinityand take the opportunity to improve per-centage which still trails Caulfield, Univer-sity Blacks and Marcellin, while St . Bern-ard's will consolidate their grip on thirdplace by allowing Coburg no latitude .

"Match of the day" again skilfully pickedfor Elsternwick Park - Caulfield and Mar-cellin . Marcellin have not been so impres-sive in recent weeks, Caulfield however didmanage to contain North Old Boys to a rea-sonable score last week .

I fancy Caulfield - but they will needall their "big names" firing.

The top teams meet in the number onegame in Amateur football - North andDe La Salle.

De La Salle, at home will have a psy-chological advantage and a coach in BernieSheehy who has the knowledge of any off-chance there might be to upset the cham-pions . But while I expect the game to beclose, I can't select "De La" - that Northmachine is winning and still maintainingtop form .

SELECTIONS : University Blacks, CaulfieldGranm ., Ormond, St . Bernard's, North OldBoys - JIM FIDGE .

B SECTIONThere will certainly be, a terrific finish

to the season in this Section . Ivanhoe havejoined Old Scotch at the head of the tableand four clubs are going to have manyanxious moments in the relegation depart-ment.

Bottom rungers, St . Kilda meet Geelongwho are still precariously placed, nothwith-standing their excellent win last week .St . Kilda still appear to lack big man sup-port for Kevin White and I feel that Geelongwith Captain-Coach Ian Davis and StevieWells in top form will take the points .

Old Melburnians have a very importantengagement with Old Scotch as a great dealhangs on the result . The Dark Blues mustwin to prove a point that it is no usebeing the best side out of the finals. The Cardinals have a tenuous grip on top

spot and will be desperate .However O/M, with Cordner, Brown and

Pisarski in form, and Dave Urquhart very

likely to do better than the 1 goal 11 be-hinds he got last week, appeal as the likelywinners .

What a difference Mike Bates has madeto Reservoir . Three wins in the month ofJune have done marvels for team morale andI see them making the trip across to Heath-erton full of confidence .Old Haileyburians have the players to

make a real fight of it but I see Reservoir'sroving experience as the deciding factor .

Old Paradians have a home ground ad-vantage on side for their effort againstCollegians, who are struggling at the mom-ent and must be worrying Coach TedFarrell . The thought of slipping out of thefour should provoke Paradians to wrap thisone up .

After hitting section leadership at theend cf May, Monash Blues have caughtthe "wobbles" and have dropped out of thefour . Coming up against "in form" Ivanhoeat this point of time augers badly for thestudents, and I confidently predict a big winfor the Black and White boys .

SELECTIONS: Geelong, Old Melbu rnians,Reservoir O .B., Old Paradians, Ivanhoe -ALF KEAM

. C SECTIONHeavy conditions last Saturday produced

another crop of low scoring games, withall top four and fifth team Hampton eachtaking the points .

Today's round provides a few posers forthe Tipster with the two top sides playingeach other at Fawkner. Conditions look likebeing heavy for some time and Fawknerlook a little stronger than Old Xavs .

In what should be a "Finals" preview,I think Fawkner will win by a nose .

AJAX at home to Old Carey, appear toostrong and a win could possibly slip theminto second spot .

Parkside, even away, should have UHSOB'smeasure, giving them a chance to con-solidate fourth place .

Old foes meet at Forrest Hill, howevera Tipster can't rely on sentiment and Hamp-ton Rovers should collect four points fromMelbourne High .Kew and Old Ivanhoe - not an easy

game to decide. Kew's performance againstAJAX was quite a good one and on top oftwo previous good wins and a home groundadvantage I think they are capable of beat-ing Old I's and perhaps relieve relegation

strain. My Selections are :- AJAX, Kew, Part :

side, Hampton Rovers, Fawkner - ALi:XJOHNSON .

D SECTIO NElsternwick's game last week is best for-

gotten but Alphington are now clear on top-Old Camberwell are in the hot seat withtheir loss last week and this week theyface up to Alphington. State Bank fell intoa hole again.

This week Old Camberwell are home toAlphington and the home side must pullout all stops if they are to secure theirposition in the four . They have the homeground advantage but I don't think thatwill be enough ; Alphington to win .

Old Brighton at home to La Trobe Blacks ;no real problems for the home side .

Old Geelong at home to Assumption . Botheams have had a mediocre season so far

, d the result is as much as tossing a coin ;lssumption get the nod .

State Bank and Elsternwick both lost lastr . ek, games that both would prefer to

iorget . On that basis I select Elsternwickto win down at Albert Park .

The St. Kevin's and Power House gamewill be a real struggle . A win to PowerHouse could put them into the four . A winto St. Kevin's gives them some room tomanoeuvre in the four . St. Kevins havethe home ground advantage and perhapsc nough edge to win.

SELECTIONS : Alphington, Old Brighton,Assumption, Elsternwick, St. Kevin's -KEITH FINDLAY.

E SECTIONANZ Bank v Brunswick should result in

A win for the Bankers . This will keep~hem within reach of the finals although Iw ould want very long odds before riskin g

y en monopoly money on them for premiers .Old Mentonlans need a percentage builder

o catch up to Beverley Hills, so the A.M .P .could get a real "doing" this week .

Perhaps a bit more desire on the part ofthe Insurers would help . What about dis-tracting the opposition with a handful ofinsurance policies?

National Bank might be able to knock offNorth Brunswick who appear to be in abenelovent mood at the moment . Northallowed Beverley Hills to catch up lastweek, but I doubt if the mood will lastlong enough .Heatherton and West Brunswick should

provide an interesting tussle - perhaps arehearsal for a final series game . Heathertonhave been more consistent than West andshould be able to increase their lead onthe points table.

SELECTIONS : Heathe rton, ANZ Bank,Old Mentoni ans, North Brunswick - SYDWHITFIELD.

F SECTIONHeavy grounds make the task of the Tip-

ster more traumatic . However last week'sresults proved predictable, at least in FSection, so your scribe has held his posi-tion.

Thornbury now a game and percentageoutside the four will regard lowly placedGlenroy as means towards regaining topberth . At Darebin this afternoon Thornburyshould take the points and place themselvesready to move back into the top four .

The big game of the round will be atthe Har Trott Oval where CommonwealthBank wiryll play St . Bede's . St . Bede's willappreciate the spacious oval which will givethe quartet of leading goalkickers opportun-ity to convert their chances . Big MickRoberts will be anxious to continue his^ood form . Dangers to St . Bede's will cometrom the Banker's greater ground knowledgeas well as active forwards Dick and W. Me-Crimmon . Overall I must stick with the

strength and select St . Bede's whose over-all performances are the more impressive.

Leaders Bulleen--Templestowe journey toClayton to encounter giant killers, MonashWhites . The combine must keep winningto ensure top billing . The "Farmers" arecapable of causing another upset . HoweverI suspect Barry Murphy will be endeavour-ing to engender an all-out effort from hischarges. Bulleen-Templestowe thus are myselection .

Footscray I .T. make the long journey toBundoora to play LaTrobe Reds . The bigLa Trobe Ground will test the visitor'sfitness as well as the stamina of their mas-seuses . However the ten round details ofcomparative ability point to Footscray vic-tory.

Disappointing University Reds visit Bul-leen United. The home side will be awarevictory could place them in the four. Where-as a loss could well mean the end of afinal four berth . All form points to a bigwin by Bulleen United .

SELECTIONS : In hope of another five vic-tories - Thornbury, St . Bede's, Bulleen-Templestowe, Footscray I.T., Bulleen United- NORM NUGENT .

JUNIOR SECTION 1The excitement and pressure continues to

mount with five of the top six teams sep-arated by only one game. Discipline is thekey to this situation and only those whohave it will survive through to the finals .

In the first cut-throat match is UniversityBlues and University Blacks . Can the Bluesproduce the goods and make amends fortheir loss to the Blacks in 'the first halfof the season . I don't think they can . Itshould be a very closely contested matchwith the Blacks running out winners by anarrow margin .

After disposing of North Old Boys in finestyle last week Old Scotch will continueto make every post a winner and defeatCoburg by a big percentage booster.

St. Bernard's will still be reeling fromthe tremendous thrashing by Ivanhoe lastweek but should overcome that set backand take off those vital premiership pointsfrom Ormond who also suffered a humiliat-ing defeat last week by University Blacks .

The clash between North Old Boys andMonash University could be of interest .

North are not playing well and need agood win to restore their flagging confid-ence. I think they can do this at the ex-pense of Monash who have dashed theirchances of appearing in this years finalsafter showing good early season form.

SELECTIONS: University Blacks, OldScotch, St. Bernard's North Old Boys -CLIFF BASTOW .

JUNIOR SECTION 2Although last week showed an improve-

ment in the weather, it did not help yourtipster with his selections. The boys atKew did not produce the necessary goodsand maybe this only proves that form can- .not be beaten - so here goes for this week.

Today is another away game for Kew atthe Old Paradians' ground . Both sides havewon two games and while I have a feelingthat Kew will win, I am committed to selectthe home side on form.Hampton Rovers play host to Melbourne

High and should continue their undefeatedrun . It is interesting to note that the leadersin each of the Junior Sections are unde-feated.

Bottom side Alphington are at home toGeelong . The visitors had a good win lastweek and should consolidate their positionin the four .

Caulfield Grammarians visit Reservoir OldBoys . They will find the Reservoir groundmuch bigger than their own and in the heavyconditions will not be strong enough towin .

West Brunswick meet De La Salle in whatlooks like being a very good game . Westwill be desperate to win, but they will findthe skill and speed of the visitors too muchto overcome .

SELECTIONS : Old Paradians, HamptonRovers, Geelong, Reservoir Old Boys, De LaSalle - PETER NATHAN .

DOUBLE CENTURY TO ST . KILDAVETERAN

One of St . Kilda CBOC's greatest everclubmen, Jim "Alby" Esmonde, todays playshis 200th game. Con-gratulations Alby, and we look forward tothe next 50 .

200 AT ALPHINGTO NGreg Gale one of the well known names

around Alphington today plays his 200thgame . Greg first started with the Juniorsand it wasn't long before he was promotedto the Seniors where he has turned in manyfine performances . Congratulationson your great efforts in the past and fortoday from all at Alphington .

U RA PIRE'S CORNER"This week week are honouring three of our umpires who have reached

milestones in their "whistle-.blowing" careers - Trevor Rowe, David Hindleand Brian Goodman.

Trevor umpires his 200th game and David his 150th game today and Brianwhistled his way through his 100th game last Saturday .

Trevor, one of the "top" umpires iniiie V .A .F.A . for many years, joined theAssociation in 1967, so he is enjoying his11th "'man-in-white" season . He is one ofour keenest and most dedicated impries, having maintained a complete record ofevery match at which he has officiated dur-ing his career .

He is also the proud possessor of theonly V .A .F .A. blazer in the Umpire's Assoc-

lio n

Trevor Rowe David Handl e

"Rawey" has umpired in A Section fora number of seasons, and has been incharge of 23 Finals in various sections of:he Association .

One of his greatest thrills was being ap-pointed to the 1975 A Section Grand Final,

but he feels that umpiring the Interstatematch between Victoria and Tasmania atElsternwick Park the same year as thehighlight of his career to date .

David Hindle, one of the fittest umpireson our list, joined the V .A .F.A . UmpiresAssociation in 1969, following five yearswith the V .F.L. Reserve Grade panel, so

he is now in his 14th season of umpiring. He is currently putting in one of his best

seasons, having probably reached the peakof his career, aided by his many years ofexperience officiating at matches in mostgrades of senior footbal l

David has umpired five Finals in theV .A .F.A ., including the Junior Section 1Grand Final in 1976 . He has also had thedistinction of "running the boundary" infive consecutive A Section Grand Finals(1971 to 1975) - a tribute to the high levelcf fitness he has managed to maintain overthe years.

Brian (Benny) Goodman joined theV.A .F .A. Umpires "brigade" in 1971 afterplaying for six seasons with Brunswick,so he has been associated with AmateurFootball for quite a long time .

He was never reported during his playingcareer, although some of our "older" um-pires say that "Benny" used to disagreequite loudly with some of their decisions .

Brian has climbed through the ranksrather rapidly with consistent performancesand has already umpired five Grand Finals .

But he says his highlights were the ASection Second Semi-final in 1975, and be-ing appointed Emergency Umpire for the1976 A Section Grand Final .

All members of the Umpire's Associationas well as players and supporters of clubscongratulate Trevor, David and Brian on`heir achievements, and wish them all wellin their future careers .

LOOKING BACKby NOEL 2LUNDLE

5 YEARS AGO - 1972Only undefeated teams were Reservoir Old .

Boys (C Section), Brunswick (D Section)and Old Camberwell (F Section) .

'Medicine man' Steven Cordner organiseda 'trots' night for Umpires with PhilipRowell turning out quite a punter and big-gest winner for the night .

Geelong (B Section) suffered their secondsuccessive defeat when they went under by33 points to Ivanhoe . Geelong finished well, kicking 7 goals in the last quarter but theyhad given Ivanhoe too big a start andwere 10 goals behind by three-quarter time .

In another surprise Collegians (B) (17.10),seventh on the list, trounced Univ. Blacks(2nd) (7.15) .

Reservoir continued their unbeaten runwith a goalkicking spree against Old Xav-erlans kicking 3327 to 5 .7 . Main scorerswere Martin 10, MeCrohan 6, and Archer 5 .

Don Oaso game s

served on the committee for manyyears and was president for 3 years . Ormondveterans to also reach 150 were John Meek-ing and "Bobo" Finlayson.

10 YEARS AGO - 1967After 8 straight wins, Old Paradians (5 .13)

crashed against M .H .S .O .B. (14,12 - Harley6, Gilbert 3) who also beat them in the open-ing game.

Old Scotch (11 .14 - G. McLean 6) gota point right on the siren to draw withCollegians.

Top goalkickers after 9 games were Shark-ey (St . Bernard's - C Section) and Brady(Toor-Malv - E Section) with 52 each .

'B' Section coaches were Les Hughson(Uni . Blues), Tom Baird (Footscray Tech .),John Maunsell (Geelong), Greg Keenan (St.Kilda CBOC), Jim Francis (Old Melb.),Jack Ellis (U .H .S .O .B .), Bob Spurling (NorthR-----~

Old Boys), Ian McCann (Comm . Bank), TedFarrell (Ormond), and Peter McCormack(De La Salle) .

Stuart Bully' Hayes played game 150for Collegians While John Elliott set a clubrecord for Old Carey with 146 games ,

100 games to Ray Hewat (Footscray Tech .),Tony Dart (Old Trinity), Ian Job (Kew),and Peter Lemon (as trainer with O .G .G .'s)

25 YEARS AGO - 1952Shocking conditions continued - only 4

teams in 'A' section scored more than 50points .

John Thwaltes, playing his 100th gamefor University Blues, starred on a half-back flank in their defeat of Collegians5 .4 (34) to 1 .7 (13) .

Collegians' press correspondent claimedthat they nearly won the game - a realoptimist !

Leadsr at this stage were Ormond (9 winsand one loss) in 'A' Section, Ivanhoe andMelbourne High (9/1) - 'B' Section, Coburg( 9/1) - 'C' Section and Caulfield Gramm.(10 wins) -'D' Section . Ormond 9 wins inthe Juniors - the only Senior team yetto break the ice was Collegians in 'A'Section .

Leon O'Brien played his 100th game forSt . Kevin's O .B .

Fifty gutsy games by one of the stal-warts of Old Geelong, Johnno Mollard . Con-gratulations from everyone at Como . Theonly back player to wipe-out on an iron-ing board .

Power House congratulate Graeme Alcockon playing his 50th game with the clubtoday. Whether in the seniors or reserves,Graeme has played mostly as a rover oron the half forward flank where his pace andexcellent disp osal are seen to best advant-age. He rarely misses a training night andalthough worried by injury lately, he isplaying excellent football and was best onthe ground last Saturday ,
