INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE SPEAKER: GABRIELLA GOMEZ-MONT

Gabriella Gomez-Mont was the founder of Laboratorio para la Ciudad (2013 - 2018), the award-winning experimental arm of the Mexico City government. Now she directs The Urban Task Force: a new type of nomadic and creative office specialized in cities – and that constantly shifts shape to accommodate high-level, transdisciplinary collaborations across the world. The tailor-made teams that congregate for each project or challenge work in the context of complex and dynamic realities, exploring new paradigms, creating unique knowledge structures for urban inquiry, experimentation, participatory practices and governance.

Besides her fascination with all things city, Gabriella is a journalist, visual artist, and director of documentary films, as well as a creative advisor to several cities, universities and companies.

She has received several international recognitions for her work in different fields, such as the first prize in the Audi Urban Future Award, the Best Art Practice Award given by the Italian government, The Creative Bureaucrats Award by the German government, and the TED City 2.0 Prize, among others.

She is an MIT Director´s Fellow, a Yale World Fellow, a TED Senior Fellow, a GeorgeTown University Visiting Fellow, an Institute for the Future Fellow, a Salzburg Seminar Fellow, a Fabrica Alumni and a World Cities Summit Young Leader.

Gabriella is also part of the international advisory committee for the Mayor of Seoul on Social Innovation, as well as NACTO’s Streets for Kids, The XXII Triennale of Milan, C40´s Knowledge Hub and UNDP’s Lab Accelerator. She was also named one of the 100 most creative people in business by Fast Company magazine. She is now working on a book called The Experimentalists: Cities, Political Imagination and Social Creativity.

David has over 25 years experience in place making. He is

a passionate designer, artist, author, communicator, and

social inventor, best known as the creator of the Walking

School Bus.

PPS in New York describe him as “one of the world’s most

inventive thinkers on creating vibrant public spaces”.

Nothing gives David greater joy than working with

communities to breathe new life into dead spaces.

Suzanne Waldron

Suzanne is a behavioural change facilitator whose masters

research focused on moving ideas into action through

pro-social leadership. Working with senior leaders across

Australia her focus is on explicit communication and solid

peer to peer relationships.

and Co-founder/director of short doco series Stories Out

Loud. A published author and media contributor. Suzanne

has been nominated for Western Australian of the Year

2016 and twice 40 under 40.

Adrian Fini has been involved in the Perth property

industry for over 30 years.

He is a current Board member of the University of Western

Australia Business School Board, the Perth Festival and a

in 2014.

He was awarded West Australian of the Year and Western

Australian Entrepreneur of the Year in 2016.

Tobias Volbert

Tobias Volbert is a Registered Landscape Architect and

Open Space Planner educated in Hanover, Germany.

Prior to his move to Australia in 2006, Tobias was involved

in community consultation and landscape architecture

projects in Germany, New Zealand and Australia.

Passionate about sustainability, permaculture and

inclusive design, Tobias has Co Founded the 7 Senses

Foundation and has been publicly speaking about the

merits of 7 senses design around Australia for over 6 years.

He is currently involved in two research projects regarding

Intergenerational park design for active and engaged

communities and Gamification for environmental learning.

Sarah Landro

Sarah Landro is currently the Gallery Manager at Perth

Centre for Photography and Co-founder and Director of

Camera Story Ltd. Sarah has worked in the WA arts sector

for the past eight years and during this time, she has

volunteered, worked for and collaborated with various

arts organisations and has been involved in several major

community arts projects.

Most recently she has been focused on a large on-

going project entitled Women Standing Strong - A

portrait photography collaboration with women in Derby,

Mowanjum, Pandanus Park and Perth, celebrating the

positive representation of women. Sarah continues to

maintain a documentary photographic practice, working

on photomedia projects in Bangladesh, whilst bringing

photographic resources to rural communities in both India

and Bangladesh.

Prof Ted Snell AM CitWA

Over the past four decades he has made a significant

contribution to the national arts agenda. He is currently

Chair of the Fremantle Biennale and on the board of the

UQ Art Museum and ANAT (Australian Network for Art &

Technology).

He has published several books and has curated

numerous exhibitions, many of which document the

visual culture of Western Australia. Ted Snell is a regular

commentator on the arts for ABC radio and television and

writes regularly for The Conversation online journal.

Shaun NannupDirector, Wisdom is your Life

Hans OerlemansLandscape Architect, Urban Designer & Urban Planner

Shaun is a Whadjuk Wardandi Nyungar man who through

his old people, has great depth and knowledge of culture,

liaison and inspirational speaking. His work in such areas

as mentoring, leadership and healing are highly referred

and respected, within both Indigenous and mainstream

community’s.

Educated in the Netherlands, he worked on a wide

range of projects throughout Europe, Australasia and

the USA. Hans led designs, masterplans and research

projects for urban centres and precincts, differentiated

living environments, innovative industrial parks, reuse

of heritage precincts and revitalisation of cultural

landscapes. Many of these projects won awards and

were published in books and international magazines.

Hans has taught at Universities and Design Academies

in Amsterdam, San Francisco and Perth, among others.

Before immigrating to Australia in 2011, he worked for 17

years as founding partner at OKRA Landscape Architects,

where he developed the unique Scenario Game method

for community participation.

Guerlaine BingwaSenior Strategic Projects Planner, City of Canning

She is inspired by resilient, adaptive and creative cities

that allow people and the environment to thrive. She also

seeks to create them. While she has worked on more

traditional strategic planning like City’s first Local Planning

Strategy, she has also been working with colleagues to

implement innovative and creative urban interventions at

the City.

Samantha Choudhury

Samantha is a highly accomplished urban strategist and

placemaking specialist with over 14 years experience

in the creation and management of places that attract

people. With experience both in Australia and the USA,

Samantha has worked on a range of scales including

city-wide urban renewal to greenfield communities right

down to place management of mainstreets and business

improvement districts and community-led planning and

placemaking. Since starting at CoDesign Studio, Samantha

has had a hands on role in the work of The Neighbourhood

Project which she is excited to share with everyone at the

Town Team Conference 2019.

David MacLennanCEO, City of Vincent

David MacLennan is the CEO of the City of Vincent. He

has extensive public sector experience with a career

covering State Government, Commonwealth and foreign

Government levels.

He was most recently the Assistant Director General at the

Department of Planning. David is a former diplomat with

the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with overseas

posting experience in the UK, Peru, Mexico and Papua

New Guinea. David is a graduate of UWA and has a

Masters of Management from ANU. His passions are family

and fitness.

Jon DenaroFounding Director, SculptureChairperson, Pickle District Town Team

As an advocate of cultural leadership and the

development of sound educational and training programs.

Rhys strives to work in environments that can and do

create holistic healthy and substantial changes. Rhys has,

over time witnessed many positive outcomes primarily

within the domain of Indigenous education.

Rhys’s focus is to now bring a modern adaptation of

traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture into

the wider Australian community in an effort to connect

Australians with our common culture – people culture.

Western Australian Sculptor and Painter Jon Denaro

creates contemporary metal sculptures often finding

inspiration in found objects that play an intricate part in

the story of the resulting piece of art. Enjoying the hands

on process of making, Jon Denaro’s sculptures maintain

a unique individuality, they look “hand made” and non

reproducible, opposing the streamlining that technology

offers.

Jon is highly experienced in complex installations and has

the necessary skills to coordinate and plan the operational

requirements of projects.

Peter CiemitisPrincipal WA, Roberts Day

Awarded PIA Planner of the Year (WA) in 2014, Peter

specialises in the design of urban precincts, waterfronts

and residential development. He is a sought-after advisor

in the design, arts and culture sectors, having held key

positions on over 20 Committees, Panels and Boards,

including the State Design Review Panel. A genuine

advocate for the Arts, Peter Ciemitis is also a visual

artist who has won the Black Swan Prize in 2010, and

was a finalist in the Archibald Prize twice. His artwork is

represented in major collections, from the National Portrait

Gallery to the National Museum of Art in Latvia and most

recently the 18th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh.

Dr Eko Pam

Eko Pam has worked as an interior designer for the past

eleven years on significant projects including the Grove

Library in Cottesloe, the Albany Entertainment Centre and

the Supreme Court in Perth. She is currently working as

a lecturer in Environmental and Spatial Design at Edith

Cowan University and Murdoch University. Last year

she completed her PhD in the area of interior design for

retail spaces from a triple bottom line perspective on

sustainability. The research explored this topic through

practice by using three cases studies which were small

business retailers in Perth.

Melissa ShawPlace Activation Advisor, City of Wanneroo

Melissa is a community planning specialist with over 15

years’ experience across a variety of fields. She has a

passion for all things place and has extensive experience

interrogating the various aspects that help grow an

authentic, distinctive community and place. Throughout

her professional career Melissa’s diverse experience

has given her unique insights into different communities

from various perspectives including community

facilities planning, open space planning, placemaking

and activation, urban design and planning, community

development and community engagement.

Peter Ciemitis

David WallerPlace Development, City of Perth

David is currently working in the Economic Development

team in the City of Perth with a focus on Place

Development. He is a relative newcomer to Western

Australia, having previously worked in numerous roles in

the Queensland Governments Trade and Investment and

Tourism Investment agencies, and for the City of Ipswich in

the Business and Investment Attraction portfolio.

David GallowayDirector, Ferart & former Chairperson, Leederville Connect

David has over 30 years experience in Australia and

overseas working for government, industry, business,

community groups, NGO’s and individuals. He has degrees

in engineering, environmental science, sustainability and a

Doctorate in design and sustainability.

His current work is strongly focused in design, working at

the front-end of large projects to make them go beyond

being purely sustainable and to become fully regenerative

and productive.

His experience is in project design and management,

regional and urban planning, community liaison, ecological

engineering, vision creation, issues management, natural

resource management, and policy.

David DoyManager Place Planning, Town of Victoria Park

David is one of a number of urban professionals leading

major change to the way Local Government operates

- from siloed service delivery to an integrated focus

on place and a commitment to delivering good urban

outcomes for people.

He played a key role in an emerging place group known

as the Beaufort Street Network. He moved across to the

City of Vincent in 2014 creating the national award winning

Place Management Program, worked with and helped

establish Town Teams across the City.

He made the shift across the river to the Town of Victoria

Park in the newly created role of Manager Place Planning.

The Town of Victoria Park and it’s team of Place Leaders

will be industry leading in their focus on and commitment

in delivering great place outcomes.

Andrew BrodieSenior Associate at Roberts Day & Vic Park Collective Committee member

Andrew’s combined passion for Vic Park and urban public

spaces, inspired him to lead the community engagement

for and preparation of the Streets Ahead Action Plan for

Albany Highway. His focus now is on collaboration to make

it happen. By day, Andrew is a Senior Associate at Roberts

Day – Planning | Design | Place. He has over 20 years

experience working as an urban planner and designer in

Sydney, London and now Perth. Andrew played a leading

role in the Bentley 360° regeneration project, which is

entering an exciting new phase, and Reconnect East Perth

Phase 2, which helped shape the City’s Draft Planning

Strategy. He is a guest lecturer at UWA, having also

performed this role at UNSW and other universities.

Jimmy MurphyDirector of Relationships, Town Team Movement

Jimmy is the Chair and animating force behind the

formation of the Town Team Movement. As a Councillor for

the City of Vincent he enjoys bringing his energy and ideas

to life.

He chairs the Arts Advisory Board who has set a new vision

for Vincent to become the Arts Capital of WA. He is also a

member of the City of Vincent Business Advisory Group

and represents Vincent on the Tamala Park Regional

Council as an alternate member.

Jimmy’s day job is as Co-Founder, Director and Festival

Producer of Upbeat Events which builds small to large-

scale,iconic, sustainable events that inspire, connect and

empower communities across Western Australia.

Dean CracknellCEO, Town Team Movement

Dean has worked professionally as a strategic planner for

12 years. He helped to prepare the Better Beaufort Action

Plan in conjunction with the Beaufort Street Net- work and

was Deputy Chair for 4 years.

Patrick WalkerExecutive General ManagerAdvocacy and MembersRoyal Automobile Club of Western Australia (Inc)Patrick Walker commenced his current position as

Executive General Manager, Advocacy and Members at

the RAC in July 2011. Immediately prior to this, he was the

Director General, Department of Indigenous Affairs from

2008.

Patrick was a Commissioner at the Australian Competition

and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Commissioner

for Consumer Protection and Prices Commissioner in

Western Australia for 10 years and during this period

he was also a member of the Legal Aid Commission of

Western Australia, the Medical Board of Western Australia,

a Trustee of the national Travel Compensation Fund and

Chairman of Workpower Incorporated, which provides

employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Patrick has also had extensive management experience

in local government, with his most recent position being

Chief Executive Officer at the City of Subiaco (1993 to

1998). During this time he was elected as State President

and as a National Director of the Local Government

Managers’ Association. 25

Urban forests excite Heather, particularly working in the space that fosters multi-

stakeholder partnerships to bring community outcomes such as improvements in

social well-being and civic participation. She believes strongly that everyone has

a skill they can share and that those in the community who choose to share their

skills should be supported and valued appropriately to build the capacity and

resilience of the community as a whole.

During the last 2 1/2 years Heather has volunteered her time in writing both

the expression of interest and request for quote for the urban forest strategy,

marketing and social media, developing content and running workshops for

community consultation along with Dave Lindner from the Vic Park Collective

and Millennium Kids Inc, co-authored the Town of Victoria Park Urban Forest

Strategy along with Vicki Caulfield and Jim Mellor, coordinated the 40 volunteers

that supported the project during its development and made numerous

presentations to Town of Victoria Park staff as well as the World Forum on Urban

Forests held last year in Italy.

Heather is a current member of the Transition to Implementation Working Group

who are working on the implementation Action Plan for the Town of Victoria

Park’s Urban Forest strategy. She also currently sits on the Vic Park Collective

committee, the Millennium Kids Inc volunteers with community groups Vic Park

Urban Foresters in supporting greening initiatives that both increase urban tree

canopy and build stronger communities.

Caroline RobinsonFounder And Ceo Of The Wheatbelt Business Network

Caroline Robinson is the founder and CEO of the

Wheatbelt Business Network, the largest business

association in the region. The WBN aims to connect

businesses and spends time investing in business

owners, who then invest in their business and help

to make communities successful. Caroline is also a

volunteer Business Manager of the Narembeen Co-Op, a

community owned café which is a space for community,

conversations and good coffee.
