With its technically advanced design, Free Spirit is a ‘one-of-a-kind’ custom construction combining the intricate detailing of multi-award-winning designer Pieter Beeldsnijder, Vripack naval architecture, and the renowned construction and engineering expertise of Bloemsma van Breemen.

From the private Owner’s Deck (a rare feature on a yacht of this size), to the unique ‘Crow’s Nest’ guest area, every part of Free Spirit has been meticulously conceived. The Owner’s Cabin is designed for space with the best views and complete privacy – an entirely private terrace goes all the way around the cabin, a feature usually only seen on yachts of 60 metres or above.

The sundeck is the second most important space on board with lots of well-conceived areas for sunbathing and relaxing. It also offers an enormous whirlpool with BBQ area and separate bar.

Free Spirit also gives one of the largest volumes on the market today for a yacht of its size – an impressive 499 gross tonnage.

Built by Feadship De Vries, designed by the renowned De Voogt Naval Architects and with sophisticated and versatile interior design by award-winning FPA Architects, GO is one of the most exciting motoryachts launched this year. A full displacement world cruiser with steel hull and aluminium superstructure, GO has full transatlantic range and can accommodate up to 10 guests in five cabins sailing with a crew of seven.

A sophisticated and bright interior draws on a variety of colours, textures and fabrics to create a calm and spacious atmosphere throughout the yacht. Flexibility is a major hallmark of her layout – two of the four guest suites can be transformed into full-width VIP staterooms complete with their own lounges. Oversized windows and glass doors aft deck provide some amazing views with every thought going into helping the owner and guests capitalise on an ‘outdoor-in’ lifestyle.

Jasmin is a striking example of the now much sought-after, expedition-style motor yachts. Built by the RMK Marine Shipyard in Istanbul in 2003 with naval architecture by Vripack, this 37-metre offers a spacious, light-filled interior and is in stunning condition.

Jasmin combines sturdy, ocean-going capability with classic, elegant comfort. With a GRT of 336, a range of almost 5,000 nautical miles and highly economical fuel consumption (147 litres/hr at 10.5 kts with two engines + one genset running), Jasmin has all the great characteristics of a much larger yacht…without any of the inconveniences.

Jasmin accommodates up to 10 guests in five staterooms including a Master Suite of almost 45 square metres featuring a king-size bed and ‘his and hers’ bathrooms. There is also an additional sixth ‘Nanny’ cabin and all four guest cabins are located on the upper deck affording guests stunning views. Well-appointed deck areas also offer a vast range of possibilities.

Bacarella represents a great opportunity to purchase a brand new 60-metre yacht without the waiting time normally associated with yachts of this size. Designed by Bannenberg & Rowell and with an interior built and installed by Metrica, suppliers to all the best Dutch and German shipyards, the feel throughout the yacht is one of quality and first-class workmanship.

Four full-height, oval windows in the Owner’s Suite, port and starboard, provide lots of natural light. Throughout the yacht elm, bronze and limestone work together to infuse the interior with a restful, sophisticated, and ultimately inviting air that is carried through to the five lower-deck guest cabins. All three accommodation decks are connected by an elevator.

A carved slate map of the world, commissioned from one of England’s leading calligraphers and stone carvers, greets you when you step out onto the bridge deck – look out for sayings from Yoko Ono and JFK.

The skylounge offers a huge space for getting together or watching the equally huge TV, or simply enjoying a drink at the bar while taking advantage of the spectacular views. A heli-pad and Jacuzzi™ complete the features of this remarkable yacht.

Conceived as a world cruiser for an experienced yacht owner, no expense was too great, no detail too insignificant when William Tai was being constructed. A finalist in The World Superyacht Awards 2010, her relatively shoal centreboard draft and balanced ketch rig, with twin engines, offers an ideal cruising configuration.

Equipped with in-boom furling technology and proprietary equipment, William Tai has been continually upgraded and beautifully maintained. The current Owners’ wish was that she be ready for a world cruise without having to undergo any extensive service or refit periods for the foreseeable future. This was achieved by taking the yacht back to the yard that built her, Royal Huisman, and ensuring her pedigree was maintained and the work undertaken to the yard’s renowned meticulous standards.

Now in the best condition since her launch, the new owner of William Tai can be confident in knowing they possess a unique vessel of undisputed quality and grace.

Destination Fox Harb’r is the latest in a line of performance cruising yachts designed by Dubois Naval Architects and built to exceptional standards by Alloy Yachts for international yachtsman Neville Crichton.

Extensive tank and wind tunnel testing went into the hull and keel designs. The result is a yacht of high stability, able to carry a powerful sail wardrobe and deliver superb performance. A carbon fibre mast, in-boom furling system and state-of-the-art sail-handling technology allow this sophisticated vessel to be operated by a small crew. Under motor, the easily driven hull provides fuel-efficient delivery passages with trans-ocean range.

Lionheart is the first of a new breed of aluminum J-Class yachts from the boards of Hoek Design in the Netherlands. Completed by Claasen Jachtbouw in Zaandam, she is the largest ‘J’ in existence, her tremendous 17-metre overhangs on a LOA of 44 metres creating a true ‘super J’.

No expense has been spared to ensure Lionheart is competitive on the race course, utilising Hall Spars’ vast experience to build the spars and Harkens’ race-proven carbon winches. Designed for cruising as well as racing, Lionheart has been built to MCA classification and incorporates two small deckhouses and two small cockpits for the Owner and ‘his and hers’ guests – a unique feature that provides added versatility to the use of the yacht, whether racing or cruising.

This stunning motor-sailer is immaculately maintained and offers the tranquillity of a sailing yacht but the comfort and space of a motoryacht. The interior layout features four spacious guest staterooms and an inviting entertaining saloon. On deck, she retains her huge guest areas with alfresco dining, sun bathing and more. Due to her Spanish registration, this large yacht is one of the few to be able to operate legally in Spanish waters and in the Balearics.

This aluminium-built CMN sloop was launched in 2003 by her proud owners who, to this day, keep her in immaculate condition. They wanted a yacht that would provide pleasure for their own families, as well as being popular with charter guests.

Doug Peterson designed sleek lines to combine optimum sailing performance with the comfort and security needed for families and guests. The wide deck offers an extra large guests’ cockpit for dining, but also for sunbathing. The crew accommodation is completely separated from the guest areas and crew benefit from their own aft entrance and small cockpit. Attimo has five crew, all dedicated to ensuring the best sailing and on-board service.

FJ: Yacht management is the support and expertise captains and owners have access to that ensures – and in some cases improves upon – the efficiency and cost effectiveness of running a yacht. It can cover all aspects of running a yacht from helping with improved discount provisioning or better yard time management, through to taking care of the yacht’s maintenance schedule, its accounts, payroll, human resources, insurance, ISM & ISPS issues, Owner VIP security, even 24/7 emergency call out. At its best, it’s like always having access to an expert second opinion supported by a team that can make things happen.

FJ: Yes it is…and if the industry wasn’t changing as fast as it is right now; if the yachts weren’t as sophisticated as they are now and if there wasn’t such a raft of legal and financial regulations coming into force, then it probably could have stayed that way. But you wouldn’t run a multi-million-dollar organisation with just one CEO and some non-industry experts to call upon – so it is now making more and more sense to surround captains with solid, experienced and informed marine expertise.

FJ: Many brokerage houses around the world, some with just one yacht manager some with 30 or 40, offer the service employing ex-captains or crew as yacht managers, each handling a certain number of yachts for the company.

FJ: I believe successful yacht management comes down to the person who is going to manage your yacht…and the approach of the company he works for. Ask how many yachts that person manages – often the more yachts per manager the less efficient the work. Ask about the experience and background of the manager in question. How well do they know the industry and yachts from the inside? Ask how the managers work with their captains? Many captains resent yacht management companies ultimately because the managers try to work over the captains rather than with them. Good yacht management does not micro-manage a captain – it supports him with all the connections, networks and know-how he needs to get the job done.

FJ: Results, track record and experience. Simple as that. We run fewer yachts per manager than most of our industry colleagues. Our managers are some of the most highly experienced and qualified in the industry: ex-Captains, chief engineers, naval architects and such. We have a good reputation for working with captains, not over them, to get results.

FJ: We have two products, both designed for maximum owner and captain support. The FREEDOM Option allows you to cherry-pick

the support you want from over 50 different specialist services. There’s no restrictions on what you pick – that’s unique in this industry – you choose what you need and pay monthly. The TEOMAKI solution – originally developed for commercial shipping – gives you a ship management software package that’s by far the most complete and the most reliable today. All the modules a captain and owner could need are there and because it is not a web-based system it is faster, more reliable and can be input on board and on-land.

FJ: If you feel more efficiency can be introduced into the way your yacht is run throughout the year then you should look into yacht management.

Who you choose to work with should depend on the experience you feel that company (and that manager) has with yachts like yours and ultimately on whether you feel the manager and his team have an approach that can properly work with your captain and crew to get the best out of them.

Oh, and do talk to YPI Management as part of your research we know one or two things about helping yacht owners, get the most out of their yachting and their yachts.

THE YPI SELECTION INTERVIEW

Getting the most out of your yacht and your yachting

It is one of life’s most memorable and rewarding moments – the day you finally take possession of your yacht.

However, in an industry that’s becoming increasingly more regulated and at a time when there is no longer the ‘luxury of excess’, the way in which yachts are being managed and how much they cost to run today, is the subject of much scrutiny by owners and their captains.

The YPI Selection (YS) spoke to Franc Jansen, YPI Director and Head of YPI Management, about the much debated role of yacht managers in today’s yachting and asks what difference it really does make for an owner.

What our clients say:“Yachting Partners support our yacht management, providing advice and practical assistance on a

wide range of technical, commercial and legal subjects, without interfering with the rather personal relationship between us, our yachts and our crew.”
