IntroductionYour Students’ Union is here to help you have a great time whilst you are here. We are here to help you in a variety of ways, from helping you make new friends, representing your University on the pitch, taking part in representing other students and ensuring that you’re supported when you need it most. This booklet is designed to ensure you know about all of the opportunities available to you as a students.

Sport at York St John is improving year on year, with the development of our new multi-million pound Sports Park. It’s a great time to get involved. With a focus on four pathway stages of sport; participation, community sport, BUCS and Excel we aim to involve every student. SW5 is our Sport England funded participation programme that delivers cheap or free activities for all students. Community Sport offers team to compete across the county in locally ran leagues whereas BUCS offer formal league structures that allows 37 teams to compete against other universities across the country every Wednesday with the aim of winning both leagues and cups.

Our Excel programme focuses on three teams, providing them with high quality coaching, conditioning and expert advice and support. Finally, our annual Varsity against Sunderland is not to be missed, with a 31:10 win in 2014, who will be this year’s victor?

Societies becomes more interesting and diverse every year. Performance & Musical Production Societies put on an extravaganza of a show each year at the local Rowntree Theatre, entertaining over 300 people over the course of the week, whilst Primary Education welcomed the Educating Essex star Mr. Drew onto the York St John Campus to talk to the society about his experiences in the teaching sector. With the first Society Varsity against York University, this year is shaping up to be one of the best.

York St John Students’ Union is ever growing and as such, not all of our opportunities will be found within this booklet, if you can’t see it within this booklet then come and have a chat to either the Sabbatical Officers or staff and we will work with you to develop your opportunity.

Here are York St John Student’s Union there are 4 different ways to get involved: SW5, societies, sports teams and various ways to volunteer. This booklet will aim to answer any questions and solve any queries you may have about signing up to take part in an activity. if the answers cannot be found, feel free to contact the relevant staff member below.

Programme Reps

What is it?

Programme Reps are elected by classmates to represent the student view within meetings, in one on one sessions with tutors.

How does it work?

We will be coming round to students through September and October to elect in class and inform of all the great things that reps can achieve. Becoming a rep means you will gain a greater sense of how the university and your faculty works, you will have the opportunity to develop skills for your employability as well as receiving some great freebies. We will provide you with a pack that includes all the general information, comprehensive training and last but not least…a free hoody!

Ways to get involved:

Elections as mentioned take place in class and will be run by either a member of the Students’ Union or your own tutors. If you are interested in the role you can also speak to people at Freshers Fair who have been involved with the system.

Elections &Campaigns

What is it?

As a democratic and charitable organisation, YSJSU incorporates a number of alternative methods to engaging with students and raising awareness of particular issues. Goverened by our Trustee Board and Sabbatical Officers we aim to run a number of campaigns which focus on local and regional campaigns.

How does it work?

These campaigns are led by the three Officers and cover a variety of areas including; academic affairs, activities, government actions and student welfare. Campaigns are held throughout the year and can’t become a success without your help.

Ways to get involved:

We also hold annual elections to bring in the new officers and you can get involved in these in a number of ways such as joining a campaign team, working with the Membership Engagement Team on stands and around campus to engage students in the process and even looking to stand for one of the eight positions available.

VolunteeringWhat is it?

We have a wide range of voluntary activities you can become involved with. Why not become a part of a community project, or fundraise within the Students’ Union, you could even work alongside us with a growing number of opportunities we have available.

How does it work?

Is there an area you would like to fundraise for, maybe you would like to help campaign for one of the many charities in York or have a proposition for a new voluntary position with the Union. You can easily become involved in a large number of ways. We will promote positions and opportunities for all students via the Students’ Union and University websites.

How to get involved:

It’s simple, see something you like and contact the relevant staff. If there is something you think we should offer that you don’t see then get in touch via the contacts below.

If you would like to get involved there are several ways you can. Why not come along to Fresher Fair and see what is available, visit the Union website at www.ysjsu.com/jobsandopportunities or even e-mail our Student Engagement Co-ordinator, Harrison Rimmer to find out more at [email protected]

CommitteesWhat is it?

As a Students’ Union we have three committees that all students can become involved with to deliver effective programmes across the year which interact with fellow students, staff and external members alike.

How does it work?

•Equality and DiversityThe committee work to ensure students are not excluded and regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, whether you are a mature student or international we offer you ever opportunity to become involved in an ever growing community at York St John.

•Sustainable CommunityThe committee work to ensure the sustainable working of both the Students’ Union and University, working with the Green Impact initiative, involving students in local community campaigns the SCC work to make sure you are a part of a sustainable and economically friendly environment.

•Entertainment (Ents) Committee Responsible for all the Union events, the entertainment team is run for students, by students. Events run on a weekly basis and currently include, Karaoke, Open Mic, Quiz night as well as a number of annual events such as Halloween party, Winter Meltdown and the traditional Archies Day!

Ways to get involved:

To get involved with any of the committees above all you have to do is contact the chairs or staff members associated with the committee. It quick and easy and you can become involved with essential areas of the Students’ Union for your time at YSJ.
