The Skin’s Structure The Skin’s Structure

• Dermat/o = The Skin

• Moving from the outer surface to the inner the skin has three layers

• Epidermis is the thin outer membrane layer

• Dermis is the middle, fibrous tissue layer

• The Subcutaneous layer is the innermost layer containing the fatty tissues

Melan/o = BlackMelan/o = Black

• The basal layer that contains special cells called melanocytes which produce the black pigment melanin

• This pigment is not only responsible for the color of the skin but it also protects against damage from the ultra rays from the sun

• Dark skinned people have more melanin and are less likely to get wrinkles & cancer

• The fibers that make up hair are composed of the protein Keratin the same hard protein material that fills the cells of the epidermis and is alike in formation.

• Hair root contains the deeper cells that force old keratinized cells to move upward

• Hair shaft is formed during this process• Hair follicles comes from the shaft• Arrector pill muscle is formed on the hair.

• There are six major parts that make up the nail• The nail body, nail bed, nail root, cuticle, lunula,

and free edge• The nail bed can be used to check patients for

low oxygen levels in the blood by observing its color.
