sowing the seeds of Change

2 YWCA CANADA ANNUAL REPORT 2013

A MESSAGE FROM LYNNE KENT AND PAULETTE SENIOR

THIS PAST YEAR, YWCA Canada tended to the foundation of our association—the roots that sustain our work.

We planted the seeds of change through building public awareness of the issues women face, the capacity of our Member

Associations and the leadership skills needed to end cycles of violence for the next generation.

From our roots we build both our movement and supports that strengthen women and girls.

We tended to the foundation of our association—the roots that connect and sustain YWCA Canada. Tied to our strategic

directions of strengthening the local capacity of Member Associations, we unveiled a five-year strategy to attain excellence in

governance across the movement. We developed tools and resources to assist Member Associations in building more effective

governance oversight to achieve their vision of improving the lives of women and girls.

This year there were many milestones and landmarks in the movement, such as undertaking a public role in reconciliation

with First Nations. YWCA Canada’s Expression of Reconciliation on September 20, 2013 at the Truth and Reconciliation

National Event in Vancouver committed us to ending violence against Aboriginal women.

At our Annual Membership Meeting, we celebrated the rebirth of the YWCA in Newfoundland and Labrador, by welcoming

YWCA St. John’s into the movement as a provisional member. With deep roots in the community, the rapid growth of this

organization has inspired and excited many in the Atlantic region and across the country.

YWCA Canada strengthened our work and collaboration with other organizations. For example, we facilitated a consultation

with youth from across the country on behalf of the National Alliance on Children and Youth. We solicited their input on a

framework that will hopefully lead to action by all levels of government to address many of the most pressing issues facing

children, youth and families today in Canada.

Our growth is made possible with the commitment of our dedicated staff, board of directors, volunteers, and partner

organizations.

We offer our sincere thanks and gratitude for your ongoing support of YWCA Canada as we change outcomes and lives of

women and girls for the better.

Lynne Kent, YWCA Board President

Paulette Senior, YWCA Chief Executive Officer

SOWING THE SEEDS OF CHANGE

OUR DEDICATION TO ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS is a key factor in achieving gender equality and drives

everything we do. Our projects and initiatives are designed to challenge and change entrenched cultural and societal attitudes

that foster inequality for women and girls. Our projects build networks and capacity to overcome barriers, make public what is

hidden, and nurture every woman and girl to act as a change agent in their own lives and their community.

At our core, we develop and deliver projects that advance the leadership skills of women and girls, build capacity for service

provision, and confidence and capacity for women to take on decision-making roles in their communities.

YWCA Canada projects and initiatives to reduce and prevent violence against women are delivered through multiple

channels in many forms. We’re pleased to share the highlights of our work in 2013.

GROWING AWARENESS & CAMPAIGNING FOR CHANGE

ROSE CAMPAIGN 2013 www.rosecampaign.caTHE ROSE CAMPAIGN, YWCA’S ANNUAL CAMPAIGN to end violence against women, launched on Parliament Hill with a call for

a National Action Plan on Violence Against Women, beginning with a National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous

Women. Over the course of the campaign, YWCA Canada released infographics that featured information about the cost and

prevalence of violence and the cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women. The success of our online campaign led to

an invitation to YWCA Canada to host a portion of UN Women’s global Tweet-Up to wrap up their 16 Days of Activism against

gender violence. YWCA was the only Canadian organization asked to host.

OUR PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES ARE DESIGNED TO CHALLENGE AND CHANGE ENTRENCHED CULTURAL AND SOCIETAL ATTITUDES THAT FOSTER INEQUALITY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS.

HOMES FOR WOMEN CAMPAIGNwww.homesforwomen.ca IN 2013, YWCA CANADA LAUNCHED HOMES FOR WOMEN (H4W), a broad-based, long-term,

national campaign to prevent, reduce, and eventually end women’s homelessness. A press

conference on Parliament Hill in February kicked off the campaign, followed by coordinated

events across the country. On National Housing Day—November 22 —the Homes for Women

campaign took to social media to draw attention to women’s homelessness, circulating an

infographic connecting women’s homelessness to violence against women. Hundreds of

individuals and organizations have signed on to support ending women’s and girls’ homelessness.

The social media campaign reaches 464,722 Canadians and generated over 1,000 click-throughs.

WEEK WITHOUT VIOLENCEwww.weekwithoutviolence.caAS WE MARKED THE 17TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL WEEK WITHOUT VIOLENCE, YWCA

Canada challenged Canadians to end violence and promote positive change through an

engaging social media campaign focusing on kindness. Supported by the Muriel McQueen

Foundation, the online campaign embodies our belief that every act is a choice and raised

awareness about violence against women and girls, body shaming, discrimination and

harassment in the workplace. The campaign reached 464,722 Canadians and generated

over 1,000 click-throughs to the campaign website.

TOOLS, RESOURCES & RESEARCH

SUPPORTING ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR ABORIGINAL WOMEN DEALING WITH VIOLENCEwww.vawlawinfo.caOUR POLICY REPORT, LIFE BEYOND SHELTER highlighted the connection between violence and women’s homelessness,

identified critical barriers that prevent women from leaving violence and recommended the implementation of women’s

advocates to guide women through the leaving process, including legal services. The report also highlighted the vulnerabilities

of women in Canada’s north, and the needs of First Nation, Métis and Inuit women dealing with violence.1

In 2013, YWCA Canada’s project, Building Service Capacity: Supporting Access to Justice for Aboriginal Women Dealing

with Violence sought to implement some of the report’s recommendations. With support from the Law Foundation of Ontario,

we partnered with local YWCAs and legal consultants to develop a curriculum and deliver legal training workshops for violence

services workers at Member Associations and over 100 partner organizations in 10 locations in four provinces and two territories.

YWCA Canada secured additional support from Justice Canada to expand this training in Iqaluit, Nunavut hosted by

YWCA Agvvik Nunavut, that allowed us to work with a local—Inuktitut-speaking—legal consultant on design and delivery of the

Iqaluit workshop and to include Nunavut service workers from outside Iqaluit to attend.

“ The training was incredibly important for the women from the small communities. I can’t tell you how many times they said things like, ‘we didn’t know any of this’, including the information about Emergency Protection Orders, the availability of funding for women in crisis (from the NWT Emergency Victim Fund—even if a crime isn’t reported) and the fact that they are entitled to legal counsel in the child welfare context. The participants also commented on how useful it was to meet each other and to learn about and build (human/personal) relationships with lawyers and service providers. ”

EMPEZAR DE NUEVO www.empezardenuevo.ca CURRENTLY, 25% OF SHELTER RESIDENTS ARE SPANISH-SPEAKING WOMEN fleeing violence. As part of YWCA

Canada’s ongoing work on anti-violence tools, we initiated Emepzar de Nuevo, a Spanish-language resource based

on the successful English and French versions, Fresh Start and Nouveau Depart. We conducted focus groups and

interviews with Spanish-speaking women to ensure the content was relevant and reflective of their experience in

the Canadian context. Funded by CAW, Social Justice Fund, Empezar de Nuevo contains information from Spanish-

speaking women with lived experience, service providers, and community partners. This guide helps women create a

safety plan, make informed choices, learn about their rights, and how to access and navigate resources and services,

including justice system services.

“ What I liked about the focus group was the opportunity it provided us to construct and support the Latino community even more. These types of activities are definitely important and enriching as they contribute to our development. Knowing that Latina women try to get informed and can share their experiences so that other people can use that information for the future is very empowering. These focus groups should happen on a regular basis. ”

EFFECTIVE PRACTICES IN SHELTERING ABUSED WOMEN WITH MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION ISSUES YWCA CANADA RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE FEDERAL HOMELESSNESS PARTNERING STRATEGY of Employment and

Social Development Canada to research policies and practices adopted by Violence Against Women (VAW) shelters, in

order to better support abused women with mental health and addiction issues. YWCA Canada worked with a researcher to

document innovations in policy and practice that are opening shelter doors for abused women with mental health and addiction

challenges. Effective Practices for Sheltering Abused Women with Mental Health and Addiction Issues documents this research

and reframes the data into actionable changes that can be adopted by VAW shelters and transition houses in order to prevent

homelessness and provide services to this population of women.

TENDING TO OUR ROOTS: FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE

YWCA CANADA BUILDS LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND CAPACITY IN YOUNG WOMEN as a way to prevent violence, build futures

and create change. We invest in the development of young women and girls so that a future without violence, oppression and

poverty is possible for all women. Part of that work is teaching girls how to take action in their communities, how to utilize

communication, co-operation and coordination of resources to achieve goals and make an impact. Developing this sense of

empowerment and self-direction is a central element in prevention.

BLUEPRINT PROJECTTHE BLUEPRINT PROJECT, a partnership between YWCA Canada, YWCA Halifax and YWCA

Moncton, delivered leadership projects to help women develop the knowledge, skills and

experience necessary to take on leadership and decision-making roles in their communities.

Through the development of long-term partnerships with other participating organizations,

schools, businesses and stakeholders, the project was expanded to include groups of women

that often face cultural barriers to participation, such as new Canadians, Francophone,

Aboriginal, rural and young women.

Participants in these programs—both facilitators and attendees—indicated that their

self-esteem and confidence in their leadership and other skills improved, as well as their

understanding of the gender-based barriers to women’s leadership. Participants also found a

safe space in which to exercise their new skills and form new alliances.

“ GirlSpace to me is a reason to look forward to school on Mondays. ”“ I love that it was just us girls and that it showed that others have been hurt too.

It feels good when we talk and let it all out. ”

LEADERSHIP KNOWLEDGE SKILLS EXPERIENCE

8 YWCA CANADA ANNUAL REPORT 2013

THINK BIG. START SMALL CAMPAIGNwww.thinkbigstartsmall.ca THE THINK BIG/START SMALL CAMPAIGN sprouted from Y Act Up. Funded

by Canadian Heritage, the Y Act Up project provided young women with the

opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, build community and become

agents of change, while improving their connection to their community, Canada,

and each other.

Through social media and an interactive website, YWCA offered young

women information on leadership, inspiring stories of young activists, creative

activities, and an introduction to key issues important for young women to

understand. These include ending violence against women and girls, ensuring women’s economic equality, protecting the

environment, fighting for sexual and reproductive rights, ending racism, and supporting the equality and rights of Indigenous

peoples.

“ It has a very powerful message, it gets girls to realize how important they are, and it was fun to get involved. ”

On March 1, 2013, we hosted the first Day of Big Change, a national community

engagement day where young women across the country coordinated rallies,

vigils, events, workshops, online activities, blogs, and all kinds of creative actions.

Our continuing goal is to raise awareness about the power of young women to

address key issues and improve their communities. While the Y Act Up project was

completed in 2013, the Day of Big Change will continue.

NORTH AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN REGION’S YOUNG WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP SUMMITIN JUNE 2013, YWCA CANADA SENT A DELEGATION OF 21 YOUNG WOMEN AND THREE ALLIES to the first ever YWCA North

American and Caribbean Leadership Summit in Bridgetown, Barbados. YWCA staff and volunteers supported the planning and

coordination of the summit both on the ground and through a year of advance planning.

One hundred and ten young women, representing YWCAs from the Caribbean, the US and Canada, participated in the

summit. Young women exchanged ideas, knowledge and experience, and enhanced their skills with the support and empowerment

of YWCA leaders from around the world. Summit session topics included HIV/AIDS, women’s sexual and reproductive health

and rights, violence against women, advocacy, capacity building, women’s economic justice, and North/South partnership.

Together, these young women contributed to the development of an action plan to strategize around the challenges they

face and their commitments to resolve them. The final report is entitled “Young Women Can, Safe. Included. Connected.

Respected. Skilled. Young Women Leading Change”

The impact on the young women is best described in their own words:

“ I now see myself as a leader and I understand that my perspectives and experiences are of value. I also have realized that even though I am still learning, I myself am a mentor and a leader. ”

Rights and Leadership, Membership, Identity and Movement-building, and

Sustainability and Funding.

UNITED NATIONS COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN CSW 57YWCA Canada’s delegation to the 57th United Nations Commission on the

Status of Women gained profile and momentum in 2013 due to two significant

sessions led by YWCA Canada:

• Young Women in Front: Ending Violence Against Women through

Next Generation Leadership, which we co-sponsored with the World

YWCA. Panelists in this discussion came from the World YWCA and

YWCAs in Canada, Australia, Tanzania and Palestine.

• Engaging Men and Boys in Ending Violence Against Women, which we

co-sponsored with Status of Women Canada and the White Ribbon
