    1.0IntroductionCongratulationsonyourrecentpurchaseoftheOceanscienceZBoat1800.TheOceanscienceZBoat1800isaremotelyoperatedelectricboatdesignedtomakesafe,unmannedmeasurementsofbathymetryTherearetwomodelsofZBoat1800,the1800andthe1800(HighSpeed).TheZBoat1800operatesindisplacementhullmodeattopspeedwithasingle200Woutdriveanda12VNiMHbatterypack,producingatopspeedofaround1.8m/s(6f/s).TheZBoat1800(HighSpeed)operatesinplanninghullmodeatmaximumspeedwithtwin750Woutdrivesandthree24VNiMHbatterypacks.Withthestockpropellers,topspeedis5m/s(16f/s).TheZBoat1800hasanABSplastichull.

    2.0SafetyandCautionsSafetyisamajorconcernwhenworkingaroundmovingpropellers.ExtremecautionmustbeobservedwhenworkingonoraroundtheZBoat.Thepropellerscanrotateatmorethan3,000RPMandproduce750W(1.0HP)each.Thereisextremedangerofinjuryifthepropellersaretouchedwhileoperating.Alwaysstayclearofthepropellerswhenthebatteriesareonboard.Thelargeredemergencystopswitchcanbedepressed(forwarddeckofboat)toimmediatelycutpowertothemotorsinanunexpectedevent.WhenpoweringuptheZBoat,alwaysturntheradiotransmitteronbeforepoweringtheboatitself.If,whenpoweredup,thereceiverontheboatdoesnotdetectacontrollersignal,theboatmayunexpectedlyenterthefailsafemode.Thiscouldbeextremelydangerous,dependingonthefailsafesetting.Thoughcustomizableinthefield,theZBoatsdefaultfailsafebehavioristotravelinawidecircleuntilRCcontactisreestablished.Conversely,whenshuttingdownalwayspowerdowntheboat(usingtheredbatteryswitch)beforeshuttingdownthetransmitter.Again,ifthetransmitterisshutoffbeforetheboat,unexpectedandpossiblyverydangerousmaneuverswilllikelyoccur.Improperlyinstalledinstrumentscancausetheboattofillwithwater.NevertrytooperatetheZBoat1800withoutproperlyinstalledinstruments.NOTE:THEZBOAT1800HASADRAINPLUG.ALWAYSCHECKTHATTHEDRAINPLUGISFULLYSECUREPRIORTODEPLOYINGTHEBOAT.

    TheZBoat1800isshippedwiththeoutdrive,skeg,andoptionalGPSmountremoved.ThissectionprovidesinstructionstoattachtheoutdriveandskegtotheZBoat1800,toconnectthesteeringlinkageandhowtoproperlychargeandinstallthebattery.

    4.1OutdriveandSteeringLinkageInstallation(ZBoat1800)

    4.3ChargingtheBatterySystems(ZBoat1800)

    TheZBoat1800isnormallyequippedwitha12V30AhNiMHbatterypackandaHitecAurora9transmitterwitha7.2VNiMhbatterypack.Itisimportantthattheuserfullychargeeachbatterysystembeforedeployment.

    Thepropulsionbatteriesoperatingendurancebetweenchargesrangesfrom70minutesto240minutesdependingonoperatingspeedanduseofsteering.Tochargetheremotecontroltransmittersbatterypack,pleaserefertothetransmittermanufacturersinstructionmanual.

    1. DisconnectallshipboardconnectionstothebatteryandremovethebatteryfromtheZBoat.

    Placethebatteryinawellventilatedareaawayfromflammablehazards.

    2. Ensurethe3to1adaptercablehasbeendisconnectedfromallthreewhiteMolexconnectors,ordischargeterminals,asshown.(Seefigure4.9)

    Important:ThebatterychargeterminalsconsistofthreeTamiyaconnectorsthataretintedgreenishyellow.Therearetheconnectorsthatwillbeusedforcharging.ThewhiteMolexconnectorsareusedfordischarge(runtimeoperation)onlyandshouldneverbeusedtochargethebattery.Dependingonthebattery,oneorbothtypesoftheseconnectorsmayhaveidentifyinglabels.(Seefigure4.10)

    3. Connectthethreechargingadapterstoeachportonthe12Vbatterycharger.Eachadapter

    isa2pieceassembly.EnsurealladaptersterminateingreenishyellowTamiyaconnectorsthatmatcheachbatteryschargeterminals.(Seefigure4.11)

    4. Selectthedesiredchargingrateoneachportviaswitchesonthepanel.Chooseeithera

    0.9Aor1.8Achargingrate(slowandfastchargerespectively).Bydefault,thechargersshipwitha1.8Achargingrateselected.

    5. Connectthethreegreenishyellowchargeterminalsonthebatterytothethreechargingadaptersonthecharger.(Seefigure4.12)

    6. Verifythatthechargersinputpowerrequirementsarecompatiblewithyourregionsline

    voltagebeforeproceeding.ConnectthechargersACcordtotheoutletandturnonthefrontpowerswitchtobegincharging.Thechargerindicatorlightswillshowredduringchargeandgreenwhenchargingiscomplete.(Seefigure4.13)

    7. DoNOToverchargethebatteries.Batteriesshouldbesupervisedwhilechargingandshould

    notbeleftunattended.Ensurethatthebatteriesaredisconnectedassoonaschargingiscomplete.

    8. Underrarecircumstances,thechargermayfinishthechargingcycleprematurelybeforethe

    batteryhasbeenfullycharged.Verifythatthebatteryhasbeenfullychargedbymeasuringthevoltagesacrosseachofthe3dischargeterminals.Allvoltagesshouldberoughlyequalandshouldbehigherthanthebatterysratedvoltageof12V.Also,factorinthedurationofchargewhendecidingwhethertotrustthebatterychargersautomaticcutoff.Forexample,a30Amphourcapacitybattery,iffullydepleted,shouldrequireaminimumof5.55hourstochargeifeachofthe3chargeportsaresettochargeatarateof1.8A[30Amphours/(3*1.8A)=5.55hours].Inpractice,ittakesbatteriesabout50%longertochargethanthetimespentdischargingthem.Ifyoususpectthatthechargingcyclemayhaveterminatedprematurely,disconnectandthenreconnectthebatteriesandrestartthechargeprocess.

    9. Onceeachmonth,thepropulsionbattery(s)shouldbefullydischargedbeforerechargingtoavoidmemoryproblemsthatmaybecausedbyrepeatedlychargingpartiallydischargedbatteries.

    1. Loadthe12vNiMHbatterypackintotheZBoat1800hullwiththeleadsfacingtowardtheelectronicsbox,asshown.(Seefigure4.14)

    2. StrapthebatteryinusingtheinstalledVelcrostrap.

    3. Connectthe3to1dischargecabletothedischargeportsonthebattery.

    4. ConnectthesinglelargeAndersonconnectortotheCCMasshown.(Seefigure4.14)

    3. Removethe#10hexnuts(coloredred)fromthesteeringlinkagescrewsanddiscard,thesenutsareprovidedtoshowtheproperassemblyofthesteeringlinkagecomponents.

    4. Connecttheshortandlongsteeringlinktotheportoutdriveusingthe#1032x1screw,#10splitwasher,and#10spacer.(Seefigure5.4)

    5.3ChargingtheBatterySystems(ZBoat1800HighSpeed)

    TheZBoat1800(HighSpeed)isnormallyequippedwiththree24V10AhNiMHbatterypacksandasmallerbatterypackinsidethehandheldRCtransmitter.Itisimportantthattheuserfullychargeeachbatterysystembeforedeployment.

    Thepropulsionbatteriesoperatingendurancebetweenchargesrangesfrom30minutestoover240minutes,dependingonoperatingspeedanduseofsteering.Onceeachmonth,thepropulsionbattery(s)shouldbefullydischargedbeforerechargingtoavoidmemoryproblemsthatmaybecausedbyrepeatedlychargingpartiallydischargedbatteries.Tochargetheremotecontroltransmittersbatterypack,refertothetransmittermanufacturersinstructionmanual.1. Disconnectallshipboardconnectionstothebatteriesandremovethebattery(s)fromthe

    boat.

    2. Placethebatteriesinawellventilatedareaawayfromflammablehazardsensuringthebatteriesarespacedsufficientlytoallowproperairflowduringcharging.

    Important:ThebatterychargeterminalconsistsofaTamiyaconnectorthatistintedgreenishyellow.Thisconnectorwillbeusedforcharging.TheredandblackAndersonconnectorsareusedfordischarge(runtimeoperation)onlyandshouldneverbeusedtochargethebattery.Dependingonthebattery,oneofbothtypesoftheseconnectorsmayhaveidentifyinglabels.(Seefigure5.10)

    3. Plugeach24Vsmartchargerintoanacceptablewallunit,theLEDlightonthefrontofthe

    unitsshouldilluminategreen.4. ConnectthegreenTamiyaconnector(chargeterminal)totheoppositeTamiyaconnectoron

    thecharger.Insurethatpolaritiesarecorrect(blackblack,redred).ThechargersLEDwillbeginflashingred.

    5. Connectthesmallredthermistorconnectoronthebatterytotheoppositeredthermistor

    connectiononthecharger.ThechargersLEDwillnowilluminateasteadyred.Thisindicatesaproperlychargingbattery.

    6. WhenchargingiscompletetheLEDwillchangetoilluminategreen.7. DoNOToverchargethebatteries.Batteriesshouldbesupervisedwhilechargingandshould

    notbeleftunattended.Ensurethebatteriesaredisconnectedassoonaschargingiscomplete.

    8. Underrarecircumstances,thechargermayfinishthechargingcycleprematurelybeforethe

    batteryhasbeenfullycharged.Verifythatthebatteryhasbeenfullychargedbymeasuringthevoltagesacrosseachofthe3dischargeterminals.Allvoltagesshouldberoughlyequalandshouldbehigherthanthebatterysratedvoltageof12V.Also,factorinthedurationofcharewhendecidingwhethertotrustthebatterychargersautomaticcutoff.Forexample,a

    30Amphourcapacitybattery,iffullydepleted,shouldrequireaminimumof5.55hourstochargeifeachofthe3chargeportsaresettochargeatarateof1.8A[30Amphours/(3*1.8A)=5.55hours].Inpractice,ittakesbatteriesabout50%longertochargethanthetimespentdischargingthem.Ifyoususpectthatthechargingcyclemayhaveterminatedprematurely,disconnectandthenreconnectthebatteriesandrestartthechargeprocess.

    6.0DeploymentoftheZBoat1800

    TheZBoat1800issimpletooperate,butsomebasicrulesandprecautionsshouldbefollowedtodeploytheboatsafely.Pleasereadthroughalloftheinstructionsbeforebeginninganywork.SEEZBOATOPERATINGMANUAL

    6.1ConductingaRangeTest

    ItisimportanttotesttherangeoftheZBoat1800transmitteratthesitewheremeasurementswillbemade.Environmentalfactorscanaffecttransmitterrange,anditisimportanttoknowofanylimitationsbeforedeployingtheboatinmovingwater.Powerlines,largemetalobjectsandotherobstructionscanaffecttransmissionrange.

    Toconductarangetest:

    1. PoweruptheZBoatandhaveanobserverholdtheboatfirmlyinplace

    2. Theobservershouldmonitorthesteeringservoperformanceastheoperatorwalks

    awayfromtheboatwhilecontinuallymovingthesteeringjoystick.

    3. Continueuntilthesteeringservonolongerrespondsorthedesiredrangebetweenoperatorandboatisreached.

    6.2LaunchandRetrievaloftheZBoat1800

    TheZBoat1800shouldbelaunchedsternfirst(backend).Thiswillprotecttheoutdrivefromaccidentalgroundingandpossiblepropellerdamage.

    1. Thoroughlyfamiliarizeyourselfwiththewaytheboatrespondstothecontrolsbefore

    deployinginfastmovingwater.

    2. Whentheboatistravelingawayfromyouitwillrespondtocontrolsignalsasexpected.

    3. Whentheboatisinbound(travelingtowardyou),thesamecontrolsignalscreatearesponsethataninexperiencedoperatormaynotexpect.Aninexperiencedoperatorsfirstresponseinanemergencymayguidetheboatinanunintendeddirection.

    4. Toprolongthelifeofthebatteries,accelerateslowlyandminimizetheuseofrudders;

    therudderservoconsumessignificantpower.

    SomeZBoatsareequippedwithanEmergencyStop(Fig.6.1).Pushingthisbuttonwillquicklyshutdownthepropulsionsystem.ToenablethemotorsaftertheEmergencyStophasbeenpressed,thebuttonmustbepulleduptoitsnormalposition.Ensurethatthebuttonisupbeforereleasingtheboatintothewater.Otherwise,themotorswillnotfunction.PayloadelectronicssuchasathedepthsounderandGPSareunaffectedbytheEmergencyStopandwillremainpoweredevenafterthebuttonhasbeenpushed.WhenperformingmaintenanceontheZBoatwherepersonalsafetymightbeatstake(ifclearingdebrisfromthepropellers,forexample),thesafestactionistofirstturnoffthemainpowerswitchontheCCMandtodisconnectthebatteries.Note:TheEmergencyStopcablemustbepluggedintotheCCMasshowninFig.2.2inorderfortheEmergencyStopbuttontofunction.Ifthiscableisdisconnected,themotorswillcontinuetorunevenaftertheEmergencyStophasbeenpressed.TheEmergencyStopshouldalsobetestedperiodicallytoverifypropershutdownofrunningmotors.

    7.0Maintenance

    TheZBoat1800isdesignedtobeeasytomaintain.

    1. ToprolongthelifeoftheABShullandfinish,washwithmildsoapandwateraftereachuse.

    2. Lubricatethesteeringballjointswith3in1orequivalentoilandregularlycheckthetightnessofallboltsandconnectors.

    3. Checkthedecklidgasketforcuts,cracksordeformation.Thisgasketsealsthe

    instrumentationareafromwaterintrusionandshouldbecheckedfrequently.4. Ifoperatinginsaltwater,rinsehullandmotorswithfreshwateraftereachuse.

    8.0ZBoatWarranty

    TheOceanscienceGroup,Ltdmakeseveryefforttoassureitsproductsmeetthehighestquality,reliabilityanddurabilitystandardsandwarrantstotheoriginalpurchaserorpurchasingagencythateachZBoat1800befreefromdefectsinmaterialsorworkmanshipforaperiodofoneyearfromdateofshipment.

    Warrantydoesnotapplytodefectsduedirectlyorindirectlytomisuse,negligenceoraccidents,repairsoralterationsoutsideofourfacilities,useoftheZBoatforpurposesotherthanwatermeasurements,orusewithinstrumentsweighingmorethan25lbs.

    Oceanscienceisnotresponsibleforlossofboat,instruments,damagetoproperty,injuryordeathassociatewiththeuseofanyofitsproductsorproductsthatmaybeincludedorusedwithOceanscienceproducts.OceansciencedoesnotwarrantthirdpartyproductssoldbyOceanscience.ThesemayincludeGPS,depthsoundersandotherancillaryequipment.
