IELTS Exam Pattern

IELTS listening testLasts for about 30 minutes. It consists of four sections, played on cassette tape, in order of increasing difficulty. Each section might be a dialogue or a monologue. The test is played once only, and the ques-tions for each section must be answered while listening, although time is given for students to check their answers.

IELTS Reading test Lasts for 60 minutes. Students are given an Academic Reading test, or a General Training Reading test. Both tests consist of three sections, and in both tests the sections are in order of increasing difficulty.

IELTS Writing testAlso lasts for 60 minutes. Again, students take either an Academic test, or a General Training test. Students must perform two writing tasks, which require different styles of writing. There is no choice of question topics.

IELTS Speaking testConsists of a one-to-one interview with a special-ly trained examiner. The examiner will lead the candidate through the three parts of the test:

An introduction and interview, an individual long turn where the candidate speaks for one or two minutes on a particular topic, and a two-way discussion thematically linked to the individual long turn. This interview will last for approxi-mately 11 14 minutes.

TOEFL(TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

Page 7: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

TOEFL(TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

Is a standardised test of English language proficiency for non-na-tive English language speakers wishing to enrol in U.S. universi-ties. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academ-ic and professional institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being the IELTS.

• Listening (40 – 30 minutes) The Listening section consists of 3 parts. The first one contains 30 questions about short conversations. The second part has 8 questions about longer conversations. The last part asks 12 questions about lectures or talks.• Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes) The Structure and Written Expression section has 15 exercises of completing sentences correctly and 25 exercises of identifying errors.• Reading Comprehension (55 minutes) The Reading Comprehension sections has 50 questions about reading passages.• Writing (30 minutes) The TOEFL PBT administrations include a writing test called the Test of Written English (TWE). This is one essay question with 300–250 words in average.

TOEFL PAPERBASED TEST

Page 8: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

TOEFLIBT TEST

• The TOEFL iBT test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points.• Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) receives a scaled score from 0 to 30. The scaled scores from the four sections are added together to determine the total score.• Each speaking question is initially given a score of 0 to 4, and each writing question is initially given a score of 0 to 5. These scores are converted to scaled scores of 0 to 30.

• The final PBT score ranges between 310 and 677 is based on three subscores: Listening (68–31), Structure (68–31), and Reading (67–31). Unlike the CBT, the score of the Writing component (referred to as the Test of Writ- ten English, TWE) is not part of the final score; instead, it is reported separately on a scale of 6–0.

• The score test takers receive on the Listening, Structure and Reading parts of the TOEFL test is not the percentage of correct answers. The score is converted to take into account the fact that some tests are more difficult than others. The converted scores correct these differences. Therefore, the converted score is a more accurate reflec- tion of the ability than the raw score is

GMAT GRADUATE MANAGEMENTADMISSION TEST

Page 12: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

INTRODUCTIONThe Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a computer adaptive test conducted round the year at test centers throughout the world. The GMAT exam measures verbal, mathematical, reason-ing and analytical writing skills. The test is designed to help graduate management programs assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management.

The Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) is needed for admission to an MBA programme or a business-related field such as finance.

AT was originally a paper-and-pencil test, it is now a computer-adaptive test (CAT), where Examinees sit at a computer in a testing center. The computer-adaptive test format means that the difficulty of the questions faced are based upon the test performance.

QUANTITATIVE SECTIONThe GMAT Quantitative section measures the ability to reason quantitatively, solve quantitative problems, and interpret graphic data. Two types of multiple-choice questions are used in the Quantitative section:

1. Problem solving 2. Data suffciency

Problem solving and data sufficiency questions are intermingled throughout the Quantitative section. Both types of ques-tions require basic knowledge of:

• Arithmetic. • Elementary algebra.

• Commonly known concepts of geometry.

Page 13: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

VERBAL SECTIONThe GMAT Verbal section measures the ability to read and comprehend written material, to reason and evaluate arguments, and to correct written material to conform to standard written English. Because the Verbal section includes reading sections from several content areas, you may be generally familiar with some of the material; however, neither the reading passages nor the questions assume detailed knowledge of the topics discussed. Three types of multiple-choice questions are used in the Verbal section:

1. Reading comprehension

2. Critical reasoning

3. Sentence correction

GMAT EXAM 2014 ELIGIBILITY1 - Applicants with bachelor degree from a renowned university can appear for GMAT test

2 - Anyone can appear for GMAT 2014 exam with no limit of age condition, but if Applicants below 18 years of age necessity to submit a written form duly sign up by their parents or guardian.

COURSE : ARABICWHO ARE THE BENEFICIARY

This Arabic course is designed for non-native students who are eager to learn Arabic outside of a traditional classroom, restricted location, and pre-set schedule. The narration in our Arabic lessons is mostly in Arabic because of our strong belief that any foreign language must be taught in that particular language. As for the terminology used, we adopted both English and Arabic Terms used in the Arab world and in the West. We did not limit our Arabic lessons to what is considered as the STANDARD practice in the field. Our goal here is very simple: to present serious instruction for serious students. SPECIAL FEATURES:

• Choose your own time for studying, evenings, weekend etc. • Repeat lessons, and go back to previous ones whenever needed. • Vocabulary with each session. • Exercises, practices and reviews with each session. • Cost affective.

The Arabic course adopts a multi-level methodology that integrates the skills of reading, writing, listening, grammar, vocabulary and conversation. These skills are reinforced at all levels and Arabic is the only teaching language used in class, except when it is necessary to facilitate the explanation of a grammar rule or lexical phrase to a beginner.

For an interactive and creative learning environment, each course sets up its:

• LANGUAGE CLUB

The objective of language clubs is to enhance students’ creativity & active participation.

The purpose is also to create opportunities for them to learn outside class setting and thus rehearse their language skills in real life environment.

Page 28: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

• FIELD STUDY TRIPS AND EXERCISES

Through field study trips and exercises, students enrich their experience and their ability to function in real life language situations, assimilate everyday life issues and immerse in the host culture. Field study assignments are done both individually and in groups. Examples may include:

• Souks: to rehearse bargaining • Cafés and restaurants: to rehearse how to order a drink or food • Museums and monuments: to learn about historical sites and handicrafts • Bus stations, railway station, beach, stadiums etc to learn about means of transport and places of leisure

• GUEST SPEAKERS

The course also integrates a series of lectures in Arabic which reflect different aspects about life in UAE.

• GROUP DISCUSSIONS

Group discussions are designed for intermediate and advanced levels for students to discuss a variety of topics in Arabic among themselves or with UAE locals.

BEGINNING LEVELMuch of time is devoted to oral dialogues and conversations about how basic interactions are run. In this respect, the course will cover different issues related to daily life such as: Greetings, introducing oneself and others, presenting family members, describing things and people, directions and locations in terms of space (as in the street), bargaining and ordering (in the market, café, restaurant…etc), weather, schedules (daily or weekly activities: permanent events), hobbies, narration and the like.

We also place much importance on the grammatical and structural aspects of the language, where the learners will cover tenses (present, past and future) mainly using regular verbs, sentence structure (noun sentence and verb sentence) and some cohesive devices. The focus is also on the writing and reading, for a better mastery of script and pronunciation. To reach such a goal, we will start focusing on, correct articulation and pronunciation of sounds, assimilating the letter positions to combine them into words and therefore acquire a set of very useful vocabulary items, forming meaningful sentences and ending by writing and reading simple texts related to the above mentioned conversational situations.

In the very first two weeks, the course proceeds by focusing more on the communicative level by introducing dialogues about real life themes. However, an introduction about alphabets, in each session, will intervene as part of the lesson. For a better mastery of the script, the learner continues with the alphabets even as the course progresses. Students are expected to do exercise such as: connections, dictation, reading and pronunciation. Our concern at this level is not the use of short vowels, except in the case endings such as adverbs, negations…etc. but to help participants read easily Arabic documents, announcement, signs…etc which do not utilize vocalization.

Page 30: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

INTERMEDIATE LEVELThe objective in this level is to give students more in-depth background about daily life issues and endow them with proficiency and mastery of the language skills critical to realistic pursuits of life. At this stage, we will go through topics such as: travelling, relationships, ceremonies, services (especially public administrations), speaking about careers (personal achievements), biography/ autobiography and functions of speech. Besides these objectives, the course also looks at some abstract subjects as an introduction to cultural and literary subjects. Meanwhile and for the student to be able to run discussions about the previously mentioned themes, it is necessary to go through other skills to meet the needs and expectations of the participants. The course tackles syntactic structures useful to drafting very correct paragraphs which consist of a variety of grammatical complex sentences. More focus is put on the lexicon that is necessary for the production and understanding of texts related to the themes of culture and literature as well as authentic real life situations.

ADVANCED LEVELWhile the previous levels focus on the daily life perspective through an emphasis on conversational and communicative approaches, this course addresses the very advanced topics in Business environment like sales conversations, negotiations, more fluent conversation etc. The emphasis falls also on the structural and syntactic pursuits of language as these are very necessary linguistic tools for the improvement of the learners’ proficiency and fluency. The course, therefore, is a completion and review of previously learnt rules. The overall intended learning objective of this course is to endow students with an ability and a sense of critical and analytical mind through the use of different language functions such as: expression of opinion, agreement and disagreement…etc.

The Importance of Strong Business Communication SkillsThe Importance of Strong Business Communication SkillsVirtually everyone communicates at work. No matter what the field, and no matter how much you know about your job,

specialized knowledge alone isn't enough to guarantee success; communication skills are also vital.

Subscribers to the Harvard Business Review rated "the ability to communicate" the most important factor in making an

executive "promotable," more important than ambition, education, and capacity for hard work. Research spanning

several decades has consistently ranked communication skills as crucial for managers. One 20-year study that

followed the progress of Stanford University MBAs revealed that the most successful graduates (as measured by both

career advancement and salary) shared personality traits that distinguish good communicators: a desire to persuade,

an interest in talking and working with other people, and an outgoing, ascendant personality. As students, these achiev-

ers developed their communication skills by choosing courses such as business writing, persuasion, selling ideas,

negotiation, and speaking.

Hence, the importance of communicating effectively on the job is clear. Strong written, and oral, business communica-

tion skills will make you more competitive, more promotable, and more productive on the job.

If you are in business, the course will greatly improve your ability to communicate in English in a wide range of

business situations. If you are a student of business, the course will develop the communication skills you need to

succeed in business and will enlarge your knowledge of the business world. Everybody studying this course will

become more fluent and confident in using the language of business and should increase their career prospects.

STARTING UP You are offered a variety of interesting activities in which you discuss the topic of the unit and exchange ideas about it.

VOCABULARY You will learn important new words and phrases which you can use when you carry out the tasks in the unit. A good business dictionary, such as the Longman Business English Dictionary, will also help you to increase your business vocabulary.

DISCUSSION You will build up your confidence in using English and will improve your fluency through interesting discussion activities.

READING You will read authentic articles on a variety of topics from the Financial Times and other newspapers and books on business. You will develop your reading skills & learn essential business vocabulary. You will also be able to discuss the ideas and issues in the articles.

LISTENING You will hear authentic interviews with business people. You will develop listening skills such as listening for information and note-taking.

Page 35: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

LANGUAGE REVIEW This section focuses on common problem areas at upper intermediate level. You will become more accurate in your use of language. Each unit contains a language review box which provides a review of key grammar items.

SKILLS You will develop essential business communication skills such as making presentations, taking part in meetings, negotiating, telephoning, and using English in social situations. Each skills section contains a useful language box which provides you with the language you need to carry out the realistic business tasks in the book.

CASE STUDY The case studies are linked to the business topics of each unit. They are based on realistic business problems or situations and allow you to use the language and commu- nication skills you have developed while working through the unit. They give you the opportunities to practice your speaking sills in realistic business situations. Each case study ends with a writing task. A full writing syllabus is provided in the Market Leader Practice File.

Language Training Approach Language Training Approach Most participants start Zabeel’s language courses with an existing knowledge of the English language. However, they

invariably struggle with the difficulty of using their knowledge in a practical way. The main objective of our language

courses is to guide participants from KNOWLEDGE to USAGE. The focus of our trainer’s work is to make participants

use English in particular situations related to their everyday work and life. This is done in four steps, progressing from

easier to more complex language skills:

Step 1: Review & Learn (Vocabulary & phrases, idioms used by native speakers

Step 2: Practise(Actively using vocabulary, phrases and idioms with high fluency and accuracy

Step 3: Apply (The language content of the course to realistic professional situations

Step 4: Develop(The skills of self-correction, problem solving and self confidence while using english

Page 36: Zabeel Language Academy Courses Brochures

Measuring Language CompetencyMeasuring Language CompetencyWe place great emphasis on measuring the language level of participants before, during and after the training. Our

testing and measurement system helps trainers to compare the level of participants before they enter the training,

during the training and at the final evaluation in a precise way. Also, the system allows us to provide our clients with

clear and reliable reports about placement (assigning participants to different groups) and training progress.

The four different language levels that we use to compare stages of language competency are based on a number of

internationally recognized systems of English language testing. Although most of these systems are designed to test

general English language ability, they are also useful to demonstrate how our practical and skills-based trainings

contribute to the progress of staff that will use English in their professional tasks.

To keep our trainings focused on English used for professional purposes, our trainers use a Language Competency

Matrix, based on the six language levels, to measure participants’ levels in eight different communication skills. With

the help of the Matrix, our clients and trainers can gain a detailed idea not only about participants’ language level in

general, but also about the differences in their passive grammar, vocabulary, and understanding, reading and writing

skills. If our clients wish to emphasize on of these skills during the training (for example understanding fluent speech

or writing skills), our system allows us to monitor the progress made in those skills more closely.

students relevant and immediate communication skills. The course teaches a variety of general business vocabulary

using authentic and up-to-date texts and engaging and motivating activities. Students then re-use and recycle these

key items of vocabulary throughout the unit and the course.

Business Result also provides skills and strategies for different business scenarios, such as talking to suppliers,

entertaining customers, or updating colleagues. These help students to communicate confidently in everyday

situations. They focus on key expressions, and then build up to a final task in which they put the new language into

practice. Language and skills practice is available through activities in the Student's Book, exercises on the interactive

The ability to communicate clearly is an important skill. Many of today’s inter-personal communi-cation take place through writing. Targeted, concise and persuasive text can make all the difference when trying to convince someone of your ideas, services or products. Achieving results through proposals, reports, technical texts, emails, memos, etc. depends on your ability to successfully persuade your readers and help them understand your ideas and act on them.

This comprehensive course focuses on all aspects of writing business texts, documents, reports, etc. that are used regularly in most jobs and professions. It covers the full life cycle of writing, starting from understanding the audience, collecting material, planning the structure, organising, writing clearly, styling, presentation and the general strategy required to make the text more convincing and targeted.

The course contains a variety of detailed sessions, each focusing on different aspects of this life cycle. Each session provides step-by-step guidelines on how to approach the subject and is followed by exercises where delegates can immediately practice the skill.

Research shows that the best way to learn is by example. All sessions contain specific examples that show exactly how recommended guidelines can be implemented in practice. Examples of good & bad text are carefully constructed to show what works & what doesn’t, so delegates can quickly apply those guidelines while participating in training exercises & later to real-world scenarios.

SELLING YOUR IDEAS How to write to sell? How to structure your text to convince your audience of your cause? How to appeal to emotions?THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND REPORT WRITING TRAININGMany people find writing difficult. Some will do anything to avoid writing reports. This could largely be due to bad approach. Many people believe that writing starts from a blank page. Although possible, this is not an ideal approach as it is quite difficult to think of the whole material in your head and organise it before dumping it on paper. The solution is to use a systematic approach. Deal with the subject using tools that allow you to divide it into smaller, more manageable chunks. Research shows that once people are able to structure their thoughts and imagine the desired flow of their text, they find writing vastly easier. This course aims to make writing easier for delegates by helping them focus on each of these smaller tasks individually and master them. The collection of these skills would then allow the delegate to write any text of any length with ease while increasing its impact and persuasiveness. Examples, in particular bad examples, are a great a source to help people understand what works and how specific techniques are used in practice. The course relies on these examples along with their associated exercises in line with accelerated learning principles to teach delegates as many related topics as possible in the given time.
