A native of Clinton, Charlet is co-owner of Charlet Funer-al Home in Zachary and has more than 20 years of experience as a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Louisiana.

Zachary Historical Association Planning Fundraising EventsBy James Ronald skains

“The latest project we are involved in is the William Bartram Trail Marker that will be located on the grounds of the Plains Presbyterian Church,” Betty Tucker, longtime Chairperson of the Zachary Historical Association, told the members in attendance at the April meeting of the association. “Randy Har-relson, historian and writer from New Roads and member of the Louisiana Bartram team, contacted me about the project.”

“He and Cindy Deshotels visited with me at the City of Zachary Archives Buildings to look at some old records of the Plains area. I also gave them a tour of the Annison House before we visited Plains Presbyterian Church to meet with Jane Burk and a committee from the church. The Plains Church Committee agreed upon a location on the campus for the Bartram Marker. The Bartram Trail Marker that marks the northern point that Bartram traveled to in Louisi-ana will be installed in August or Sep-tember at no cost to the Association or the Church.”

“Our annual Association Home Tour will be held on Sunday, October 18th,” Betty Tucker pointed out. “We have three houses lined up now for the tour and will probably have more by the time our plans are finalized. One of the historic houses we would really like to have on the tour is now on the market for $1.5 million. Perhaps, if we can get it on our tour, it will give them a little added exposure to interested parties. Another of the homes we are excited to have for the tour is the historic and recently renovated Nelson House on Main Street, which is owned by Daniel and Adonica Duggan.”

Jean Byers, Director of the Zachary Historical Village was invited to attend the April 7th meeting of the Zachary Historical Association. Byers, at the in-vitation of Betty Tucker, gave a detailed report of the new agenda planned for the Historic Village in downtown Zachary. Byers asked for the help of the Associa-tion to make the Agenda for the Village become a reality.

“We have always supported the Vil-lage and the things the City has wanted

to do to upgrade the Village,” Betty Tucker noted. “As an Association, we have raised and spent considerable monies for not only the Village, but also for the Annison House. The Association has provided a significant amount of furniture for the Annison House.”

“It was the work of the Association that really helped the Annison House become a reality. If you will recall, we applied for and received a considerable size grant for the Annison House Proj-ect. We are looking at fundraising op-portunities to secure money to continue our efforts in financially supporting historical projects in Zachary and the Plains.”

Byers presented the concept for the Boudreaux Memorial Area next to the Train Depot. “It will be green space with

flowers, grass and crepe myrtles,” Byers explained. “The Boudreaux Memorial Concept will be located at the rear of the existing Train Depot building. “

Preliminary drawings show a walk-ing pathway that will intersect with the Boudreaux Memorial area, giving visitors access the Historic Village. The walking path, which ends at an arbor as per plans, will use concrete etched into shape of cross ties to make the walk-ing path appear as an authentic railroad track.

The city’s agenda for improvements to the Historic Village includes painting the interior of the McHugh House, re-moving gutters and repair of soffit and fascia and sodding the lawn with new grass. The Bauman House is scheduled

School Board Freezes Pay, Approves Field Cost Overage, Honors Students at MeetingBy Jen Bayhi-GennaRo

Superintendent Scott Devillier and the School Board met for their regularly scheduled workshop and board meet-ing, beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Everyone was glad to see Superintendent Devillier back after a weeks-long absence due to a medical issue.

The meeting, which started at 7 p.m., was a packed house, filled with students and family members to watch the ceremonial recognition of students of the year from each school, the math Olympiad students, the Girls Divi-sion 1 Indoor State Champions, Zach-ary Principal of the Year, and Zachary’s own Alexis Granville, who competed on American Idol—all of whom have made Zachary proud.

But first, the workshop began with a review of an unusually long person-nel update. Several of the vacated posi-tions will not be filled due to mandatory budget cuts since the March 28 sales tax was defeated.

The first major discussion pertained to the Step Increase for 2015-2016. The district-wide salary step increase was frozen last year due to budget concerns. The Superintendent explained that cur-rently, teachers’ salaries are budgeted “down to the penny.” Board member Heidi Vessel said her paramount con-cern is “to take care of who we have now than to try to implement an in-crease to be attractive.” Board member Hubie Owen made a motion to freeze the Step increase, and it was seconded.

The biggest news of the night was that the lowest bid for Zachary High School’s Track and Multipurpose Field Project came in $175,000 over the ap-proved budget of $975,000, bringing the total project cost to $1,150,000.

Global Synthetics Environmental (Geo-Surfaces) had the lowest bid by a consid-erable amount. The project is to start on or about May 1, 2015, and the contract allows for 100 days to be given to com-plete the job. The firm will be assessed a penalty of $1500 per day for any over-ages, barring any torrential and repeated downpours that significantly delay the project beyond their control. The field is to be complete by the first home game on August 21.

“I know this is a large amount of money, but I know the benefits it has provided for every one of our kids,” said Board Member Beth Kimmell. “If we

don’t do it then we have a track we can’t use,” she said. Vessel said the $975,000 has already been allotted out of the gen-eral fund and is a “done deal” anyway. It was decided that the budget would be amended to allow for the $175,000 over-age to also be allotted from the general fund. Both the budget amendment mo-tion and the acceptance of the lowest bid passed with all in favor.

It was also discussed and voted on

in the meeting that the new Athletic Ad-ministration Building will be named in honor of our past ZHS principal, the late Jerry Boudreaux.

And on a similar note, Gaynell Young commented on the recent passing of Jesse Spears, who was “very instru-mental to our having our independent school system.” Adonica Duggan made a film on Spears that is now officially part of the fourth grade curriculum.

Students of the Year are pictured with Superintendent Scott Devillier and Board President Hubie Owen. The students are: Zachary Early Learning Center - Carson Southall, Northwestern Elementary School - Louis Martin, Rollins Place Elementary School - Isa-iah Smith, Zachary Elementary School - Skylar Campbell, Copper Mill Elementary School - Christopher Masterson, Northwestern Middle School - Tala’ Spates, Zachary High School - Eddie Veal and Zachary Career and Technical Center - Deontre’ Goodie.

“I hope the Zachary Historical Asso-ciation can continue to help the Zachary Historical Village as it has in the past. The Association has done a great job in helping the Village,” Byers noted.

Perhaps the Association can begin meeting in the Annison House to help make better use of the house.”

Ryan Southall, a Zachary High His-tory teacher and Quiz Bowl team spon-sor was re-elected as Secretary/Treasur-er of the Zachary Historical Association. He was re-elected to that position at the April 7th meeting held at the Archives Building across from the Village. ZEPTO Race to the Finish a Soggy, Successful EventMother Nature tried to rain out

the Zachary Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (ZEPTO) Race to the Finish, but over 720 runners and volunteers would not let that happen last Saturday morning.

The 2nd Annual event was pre-sented by Lane Regional Medi-cal Center and Colonial Pipeline Company and sponsored by Carrie Godbold at Keller Williams Realty in Zachary, Superior Ford, Dana Hanchey at UPS Store Zachary, Jett’s Food Mart, Cardiovascular Institute South, Dr. Mark Garon Pe-diatric Dentistry Zachary, the Free-man Family and Charlet Funeral Home Zachary.

“We had an overwhelming turn-out based on the weather,” accord-ing to race organizer Lianne Craw-ford. “Our numbers were fantastic overall.”

Of the many highlights of the day, the one that stood out most was the Zachary Fire Department run-ning the Mile with full gear includ-ing masks on, and firemen running the 5k race with full gear.

In addition, Ainsley’s Angels Riders were incredible and people were cheering wildly as they crossed the finish line. The introduction of Ainsley’s Angels was new this year and hopefully will become an an-nual fixture to the race. The race had 5 Ainsley’s riders, even in rainy weather, participate - and Superin-tendent Scott Devillier presented them all with custom made medals at the finish line. Ainsley’s Angels is an organization that runs with peo-ple who have developmental dis-

abilities to ensure that everyone can be involved in endurance events.

The youngest 5k participant was 3-year-old Seth Turner. He is a ZELC student who is taught by Ms. Candace Copeland. Young Seth was running in support of his cous-in, an Ainsley’s Angels rider. Seth did not stop and ran the entire 5k course with his teacher. Along the way, he got a helping hand from lo-cal Firefighter Jordan Charlet who picked him up and was encourag-ing him to keep going. When Jordan crossed the line he went back out onto the course looking for Seth. They crossed the finish line together with Seth shouting, “I’m a winner, I’m a winner.” Seth’s mother, Kan-dis Turner and father Alton Turner post-race were absolutely elated that a community such as Zachary could

pull together and give her son an ex-perience that enabled the cousins to share the same course at such young ages. Kandis is a lifelong Zachary resident and was over the moon that Jordan Charlet gave Seth something to remember for the rest of his life.

“Each year we hope to create memories that everyone in the com-munity will remember and cherish for years to come. Seth Turner and Jordan Charlet were the perfect ex-ample of community solidarity,” added Crawford.

All five ZEPTO Principals were present even in the rain. They were running, volunteering and cheering on their teachers and students.
