I am currently a senior attending Slippery Rock University,
majoring in Exercise Science with a minor in Sport
Management. After completing the rest of my
undergraduate courses and required internships, I will
graduate in May 2014. I will then be attending graduate
school in order to attain a M.S. degree in Strength and
Conditioning. My future career goal is to either be a strength
and conditioning coach or manage a fitness facility.

experiences While attending SRU, I have volunteered as an aide for
the physical therapists at WestArm Physical Therapy
located in Leechburg, PA, and as an assistant baseball
coach for the Kiski Valley Junior Legion Baseball team.
WestArm Physical Therapy
My duty as a physical therapy aide was to help the
patients by preparing heat and ice packs, ensure the
equipment was being used properly, and keep track of
the progression charts (i.e., how many repetitions were
performed, what weight was used for strengthening
exercises).
Kiski Valley Junior Legion Baseball
My duties as the assistant coach are to evaluate talent,
teach proper fundamentals, coordinate drills, assist the
other coaches with game strategy, first base coach, and
help with field maintenance.

experience Sport Management minors are required to complete a practicum prior
to graduation. I used my experience as an assistant coach for the 2012
Kiski Valley Junior Legion baseball team as my practicum. This
practicum suit me very well because I was exposed to both the coaching
and management functions of a sports team. I really enjoyed coaching
and being around the game of baseball, a sport that I have participated
in as a player, umpire, and now coach since I was 5 years-old. I will be
returning as assistant coach for the 2013 team.
The 2012 team advanced to the section semifinals. It was the first time
the Kiski Valley Junior Legion team made the playoffs since 2007.

SRU Strength and Conditioning Association (SACA)
SACA is a student-run organization that provides students
with opportunities to learn more about the field of strength
and conditioning. These opportunities include guest speakers,
workshops, and participating in events that are coordinated by
the SACA election board (e-board).
At the beginning of my senior year, I was elected to be the
club’s Historian. This e-board position is responsible for
keeping track of all club meetings and events and
communicating with the rest of the e-board to ensure all tasks
are completed on time.

The Sport Management Alliance is a student-directed
organization dedicated to enhance the professional
development of future sport managers. While education is a
vital ingredient to achieving success, SMA provides Sport
Management majors/minors with outside university
experiences. Students are able to meet academicians and
practitioners in the Sport Management field through attending
conferences. These conferences give students the opportunity
to not only meet and speak with professors and practitioners,
but also meet other Sport Management students from across
the United States.

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
In the summer of 2012, I passed the NSCA CSCS exam. The
exam consisted of questions about general exercise science
principles, nutrition, exercise prescription, and exercise
technique. The prerequisites for registering for the CSCS
exam include pursuing or attainment of a bachelor’s degree
and holding up-to-date CPR and AED certifications. My
having this certification will significantly increase my
chances of working in the field of strength and conditioning.

Class Projects
During my tenure as a student at SRU, I have completed
several projects for both my Exercise Science and Sport
Management classes. I utilized different software
programs for these projects, including Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft PowerPoint, Wix, and
Audacity. As I reflect on the amount of assignments I have
completed, I am confident that I will be prepared for any
tasks assigned to me in both graduate school and the real-
world. I have provided examples of the various
assignments I have completed.

Rocktober Open Flyer It should be noted that the students of the class handled every
component of organizing this charity golf outing. We were able to raise
$3,500 for Make a Wish as well as raise money for the SRU Sport
Management Scholarship Fund. My role was public relations, and
created the main flyer that was used to advertise the event. I also
helped a classmate create the event program and contacted the Grove
City Premium Outlets for a donation.

Reflection
Statement I remember my first day of college like it was yesterday. I had no idea
what to expect. All I knew was I did not like my roommate. I ended up being late
for a few classes and quickly recognized the fact I was not going to like some of my
professors. By the end of the first week of classes, I realized I had begun a whole
new chapter of my life. I have learned more about myself and the real-world in the
last 3.5 years than I learned in the first 17. I have learned plenty in the
classroom, but I have also become more street smart. Perhaps the most valuable
lesson I have learned is that hard work and perseverance are the two most
important factors for being successful in all aspects of life.
Additionally, I realize that personal development is a never-ending
journey that has its highs and lows. I still need to enhance my relationships with
those who will help me get a job in my desired career field and improve my time
management skills. However, my work ethic, dedication, and desire to be
successful will continue to be my guide that lets me reach my goals.
As I reflect on where I am in my life, I am happy with the path I am on.
Prior to graduating from Slippery Rock University, I must complete 2 more
semesters of undergraduate coursework and 2 internships. After this, I will be
attending graduate school, and then I will be released into the real-world. I am
nervous about coming to the end of my tenure as a college student, but I am also
excited about the endless possibilities that will be before me. Above all, I am
confident that my former and current professors and bosses, friends, family
members, and personal experiences will have me well prepared to make something
of my life. However the rest of my life turns out, I truly believe it will be a damn
good one filled with countless positive memories and moments of happiness.
