Malnourished with no knickers
Sarah* visited Alison Burridge* in Bulawayo
What can you do?There are hundreds of people like Alison in today’s Zimbabwe.
Prices are high. ZANE cannot afford to help them all.
Save an old lady’s dignity and make a gift to Alison today.
Alison Burridge is 84 and a retiredschoolteacher. She lives in a tiny flaton the outskirts of Bulawayo. Herhusband Stephen was killed in theSecond World War. She has nochildren. All her savings andpension were destroyed in the greatinflation. She was trying to live on apound a day. When I found her aweek ago, she was malnourishedand ill. I arranged some food andoffered to take her to the doctor. But she refused to go!
I couldn’t understand it. A few dayslater, I visited her again. She seemedto be morbidly depressed. I couldnot establish the real reason. Thenyesterday, on impulse, I gave her anadditional $20. It wastransformational! Over a cup of tea,Alison slowly told me the reason forher depression. She was so poor, she couldn’t affordknickers! Poor Alison was proudand she did not want the doctor tosee she couldn’t afford underwear.

a difference
Growing old with
empty pockets
Local pensions for retired civilservants, now paid out in USdollars, have converted to less thana pound a day. Foreign pensions, previously exchanged on the blackmarket, now leave elderlyZimbabweans trying to survive onless than two pounds a day - notenough to pay for monthly homerentals, let alone utilities, food andmedical needs.
The work of ZANE1 ZANE does not supply money or food in bulk. Rather
ZANE is a “relational” charity, in that we gently means
test the 1,800 elderly people to whom we give aid. At
the same time, we give encouragement to often very
lonely people. That includes about 600 ex-servicemen
and their widows/wives. In this way, ZANE ensures
that only those in need of support receive it so we don’t
waste donor money.
2 ZANE has lost no donor money to corrupt officials
since its foundation in 2002. Support goes to where it
makes a vital difference.
3 ZANE employs 32 skilled and brave people in
Zimbabwe. ZANE is the only charity that offers help to
needy members across the community.
4 ZANE is the largest supplier of financial grants to the
pensioner community in Zimbabwe.
5 ZANE was the Daily Telegraph Group’s overseas
charity of the Year 2010/11.
6 ZANE is in effective partnership with all the UK
services’ charities in Zimbabwe. Since 2004 ZANE has
facilitated circa £1.6m in grants to WW2 veterans and
their widows (and others).
7 ZANE financially supports various Trusts which assist
the elderly destitute.
8 ZANE operates primary care clinics in the High
Density Areas around Harare, where there is extensive
disease and poverty and therefore limited access to
health care.
9 ZANE assists in the funding of an orphan prevention
programme, whereby it cares for widows, children and
orphans.
10 ZANE assists in a cholera prevention programme
funding boreholes to provide safe water. It assists with
a revolving credit system to enable people to become
self sufficient.

Michael* reports:
“The borehole and pump arefunctioning well and continueto provide drinking water to theresidents of Mabvuku, a highdensity township which hadalmost no municipal water andwas an area hard hit by cholerain 2008/9”.

Ex Rhodesian African Rifles
Patrick Olangi
I met Patrick, who served in theRhodesian Rifles for five years until1958. His character was describedas “exemplary”.He told me that he has threeorphaned grandchildren.
These ex-servicemen and widows of ex-servicemen of the Rhodesian
African Rifles arrived at the office in a group. They all served with the
British forces in the Malayan campaign in the 1950s.
Hope for Heroes – Please act today
What can you do?
ZANE has to buy essential food and medicines to help these brave people and their wives andwidows who have nowhere else to go other than ZANE.
We can’t help without you so please send us a gift today.
By doing so, you can be part of ZANE’s commitment to making a difference and saving lives.
They are amazing! They had travelled up to 300 miles from all overZimbabwe and slept on the pavement in order to seek ZANE’s assistanceand yet they were all so smart. They fought for the Crown in theMalayan campaign. We know that the UK services’ charities have beenmost generous, but what can we do to top up the aid? In the last yearour costs have leaped over 600% in real terms whilst demand forZANE’s services has risen 500%.Their savings have been destroyed by hyper-inflation.

Jumpfor Joy
Helen writes:
“I visit the ZANE Jump for Joy training course arrangedand paid for by ZANE to teach hundreds of nurses anddoctors how to cure clubfoot by the process ofmanipulation or surgery”. ZANE needs more money toextend the programme in Zimbabwe to be able to correctclubfoot in both Harare and Bulawayo so that morechildren can be cured.
There are up to 14,000 cases of untreated clubfoot inZimbabwe.
What can you do?
ZANE needs your money to continueto help children Jump for Joy.
ZANE needs to be able to fund morevisits from surgeons in the UK to
teach nurses how to cure clubfoot inZimbabwe.
Clubfoot Programme
Education Outreach
Elizabeth reports:
“Many of the children in ourcommunities are illiterate. This isironic in a country that used to havethe highest educational literacyrates in Africa.
The schools have almost allcollapsed in the economic turmoilthat Zimbabwe has experienced inthe past decade”.We are providing essential literacyand numeracy skills.
ZANE staffer Jemima* has beenattached to a learning centre. Shehas a great gift for working withchildren and a great passion to doso.

what others say . . .
Zimbabwe is still at a critical

ZANE is now the largest giver of aid of all the charities operating in Zimbabwe,
other than the international food agencies.
ZANE is the only charity operating in Zimbabwe that gives substantial aid
to both the white and the black communities.
ZANE supports communities with safe water projects, an education
programme, and encourages the formation of small business projects.
Dear Week Reader
Tom Benyon walked from Edinburgh to London - some 452 miles - from early
September until late October 2010.
In June 2011, Tom walked 350 miles from Land’s End to Westminster. Both walks
were to raise awareness of the plight of all those who find themselves imprisoned
in Zimbabwe.
Thank you for reading about ZANE’s work. To see more please visit www.zane.uk.com.
ZANE’s costs in Zimbabwe have risen 600% in the last eighteen months and at the same
time demand for ZANE’s services has risen 500%. So despite the fact that our donors,
particularly the services’ charities, have been most generous, we simply need more
money. We are already having to turn desperate people away.
Our work in the high density areas is essential and life saving. Alison and Patrick (see
pages one and three) came to the aid of the free world when we were in grave difficulty.
Now they are old and frail. Without ZANE’s help they face destitution, for we are their
only lifeline. Unless we can help them right now they will die for lack of food and
medicines.
In eight years, ZANE has lost no money to corrupt officials. Donor money goes to where
it makes a vital difference.
If you want to save a life, send a donation, or better still, make a monthly donation that
allows us to plan the future with confidence.
If you have some shares you would like to donate to ZANE, we would be pleased to
accept them with our grateful thanks.
Yours sincerely
Tom Benyon OBE
ZANE Director
