Zanzibar and Pemba Islands are just off the East coast of Tanzania in East Africa. Zanzibar is famous for beautiful sandy beaches, good hotels, scuba diving, dolphin tour and spices. Its long history started thousands of years ago when it became a trading base for Arabia, India and Africa. The first mosque in the southern hemisphere was built here. Spices, ivory and the slave trade were important pillars of the economy. Pemba is famous for its cloves and has good fruit and vegetables available. The population of these two islands are over 1 million. The main religion is Islam, comprising 96% and the Christian comprising 4%. There are multiple health challenges including an infant mortality rate of 84/1000 live births. The only other medical service is the local hospital which is always overcrowded, inadequately staffed and never enough medicines. Adventist free medical and dental camps are conducted for three days every year. This medical outreach program is funded by ECD Health Ministries Department, Global Mission, Tanzanian Union and East Tanzania Conference. More than 2,000 people are seen each time.

Medical, dental, eye and free Voluntary Counseling and Treatment (VCT) services are offered. The government are asking us to upgrade our services and we want people to know the health giver Jesus Christ.

We need to re-establish the empty hospital on Pemba; build staff housing; provide equipment. On Tanzania we need to renovate the buildings; provide new equipment; find doctors and improve the quality of care. The commitment is already there. We can present a strong focus on the mission of the church.

Health Ministries is the ‘right arm of the gospel’—here is the golden opportunity.
