Mr Mirjanur Rahman has been the
owner of Royal Fried Chicken since
2009. He is engaged with providing

Maureen’s Pie and Mash is a family
run business and is managed by
Karen Patterson. The food they offer
is traditional to the East End.
• They provide smaller portions
for children
• The orange juice is sugar free
• Tea and coffee are made with
semi skimmed milk unless the
customer specifically asks for
full fat
• All the dishes are made on site
• Ms Patterson has attended the
free Healthier Catering work
shop

Eastenders Pie and Mash is

they offer is traditional to the East

Poncho 8’s Crossrail Place outlet is

borough. Alex Costa manages the
outlet situated in Canary Wharf.

number of years. James Paget owns
and manages the café. He has fully
embraced the need to provide

salmon (which is an oily fish) –
some regulars had never tried
salmon before so they liked this
• There are healthy breakfast
options such as porridge and
poached eggs

Curry Hut has been in Chrisp Street
for a number of years. Shahid Butt
owns and manages the outlet. Mr
Butt has embraced the Food for
Health Award.
• All food is grilled or baked where
possible
• Salads are provided to the
customer without an oil dressing
• There is a choice of rice, wraps
or lentils
• Any excess oil on dishes is
removed before it is re-heated
and served to the customer

The Professional Development
Centre (PDC) can be found on
Bethnal Green Road. It is managed
by Stacey Slattery-Thomas who has
moved the Café from the award level
through to the Gold by making small
but significant changes to what food
is offered.

• Stacey attended the free
healthier catering workshop
delivered by the council’s Public
Health Dietitian
• Butter is not used on bread
where sandwich fillers are made
with mayonnaise

The Curve and Senior Common
Room are in the grounds of Queen
Mary University. Debra Deering is
the Manager and is committed to
ensuring that customers have choice
in the food they choose. The team
has made small but significant
changes.
• Hash browns are oven baked
• Vegetables are grilled as part of
a main dish
• A selection of pre-packed
sandwiches are around
300kcals for people who are
trying to manage their weight
• As award winners, staff have
attended CIEH Level 2 Catering
hygiene training for free

Al-Barr is situated on Burdett Road.
Mr Abdul Azad is a new award
winner making significant changings
to his menus to ensure that provides
a heathier choice of foods to his
customers, he has done this by:
• Using healthier oils to cook their
food with
• He provides pri pri grilled
chicken
• He provides an oily fish dish
(sardines and rice ) at least
once a week
• Tea and coffee are made with
semi skimmed milk
• Mr Azad will be attending the
next healthier catering work
shop, which move him into the
Gold category

Huseyin Dag is a Gold award winner

customers, he has done this by:
• They use sunflower oil to cook
their food with
• He provides fresh grilled salmon
( an only fish ) on a daily basis
• The chips are chunky which
reduces the uptake of oil when
they are cooked
• The salads are served with
optional dressing
• They are a 5 in the Food

winner, they have making significant

preparation and cooking of food
• Salad dressings are served on
the side
• Water is available on the tables
• Rice, chickpeas and chapatti's
are available instead of chips
