Clean the interference filters with a c lean and dry cloth. The ideal is a lens or glassescleaning-cloth.
Never open any of the systems components. By doing so, theuser may inadvertently damage the system and the ZScanner800 will have to be recalibrated. Only ZCorp staff or authorized
technicians are qualified to work on the scanner. Nomaintenance is required by the end user. If the system shows
any troubles or malfunctions, it must be sent back to ZCorp or toan authorized reseller.
Unauthorized manipulations on the scanner will void thewarranty.
Software Presentation
Positioning Features
In order to position itself in space, the ZScanner 800creates a positioning model from the positioning targets. At all times, the scanner needs to be able to see at least 4positioning features. These features are the positioningtargets that were placed either on or around the objectbefore scanning.
There are two different ways to acquire these targets:either by using the Scan Featuresmode or by detecting
features interactively in the Scan Surface mode. Theformer enables the acquisition of the targets only, whilethe latter concurrently acquires the targets and the surface of the object. The resultingmodel, whether it has been acquired in Scan Surface or Scan Featuresmode, can thenbe exported for later use.
During scanning, if a target is detected more than once, the ZScanner 800 will updatethe position of the target with the new detected position, therefore increasing theprecision of the positioning model during the scan. The user can also choose to activateor deactivate the use of a positioning feature in the positioning model in order toexclude that target from the calculation of the sensor's position or orientation.
ReferencesTo represent the space in which the object is positioned, the scanner needs a 3D coordinate system. By default, 3Ddata is represented in the "Sensor Reference Frame",whose origin is set to be the scanner's position when theuser starts to scan.

The user can change the coordinates system either automatically with the auto-detected reference model, or manually by creating another reference with the AddReference tool. This wizard allows the c reation of references from existing features in thescan.
Each reference available in the selected scan can be renamed, deleted or set to be
used as the origin of a new reference frame. Exported features or facets will then belocated in that reference frame.
Surface and Volume
Scanning with the ZScanner 800 takes place in a virtualcube called Scanning Volume, which is represented by abounding box on the screen. In order to be represented, the object has to be located in that volume. It is possible
to adjust the size and position of that volume through theSurface view. It is also possible to set the resolution of thevolume in order to match the level of detail needed onthe object scanned.
Facets, Edition and Multi-resolution
Facets represent the final output of the scanner which isstructured as a continuous mesh of triangles. Contrary tomany scanners, the ZScanner 800 does not rely on a pointcloud that is later triangulated but generates direc tly asurface.
Prior to generating the final result, it is possible to edit thescan inside ZScan. However, ZScan being mainly anacquisition software, the editing tools are not meant toreplace those offered in post-processing software, but are
rather aimed to improve the facets to produce a cleanerresult.
The software allows to remove facets and to increase or decrease resolution on selectedparts of the object. For example, the user may want to get a higher resolution on aspecific detail on the surface to see its edges more cleanly, or remove trianglesbelonging to the background. Those deleted facets are transferred into the Recycle Binand can always be restored later.

The final file may be saved as a .STL file, which is a standard file used by most post-processing software.
File Types
ZScan uses different file types to store the result of its actions.
.CLF License file that makes ZScan functiona l. A specific license isneeded for each ZScanner 800.
.CST Configuration file that contains data specific to eachZScanner 800. The file contains calibration parameters andinformation needed to create a new session
.CSF Session file containing all the data related to a session, such asthe scans, the resolution parameters, the deleted fac ets, etc.
.STL File format used to export facets.
.TXT Text file used when exporting the positioning modelcontaining all positioning targets.
.OBC File produced by AICON 3D Systems software that can beused to import a positioning model acquired byphotogrammetry.
General Considerations
ZScan is a software that takes advantage of modern computer architecture. Almost alloperations are multi-threaded to take advantage of the dual-core processors in thecomputers.
Due to constraints in Windows, there is a limit to the amount of memory that can beallocated to a single program. That limit is set to 1.4 Go in Windows XP and to 1.6 Go inWindows Vista 32 bits. In Vista 64 bits, the limit is function to the total amount of memoryavailable in the computer. For a computer with 4 Go of RAM, the limit is set to 3.7 Go.
If you go past these limits, ZScan will display an error message prompting you to reducethe resolution or to increase the volume. It is important to note that the data in thesession is not lost. It will reappear when the volume is changed back to a morereasonable setting. It is also possible (and recommended!) to save the session at thatpoint.

In all modes, a right click in the 3D Viewer will open a contextual menu with relevantfunctions for the user. Once again, the contents of this menu depends on the currentmode of the scan tree.
At all times, the following three functions will be available.
Reset Viewpointwill move the viewpoint back to its original position. It is a quickway to get the whole piece in the 3D Viewer when zoomed on a detail orsomehow lost the model from the current view.
Lock Zoom allows the user to set the level of zoom on the piece and still allow theviewer to follow the movements of the scanner during the scan. This function isuseful when scanning on small details on a part. The default value is unchecked.
Lock Viewpointallows the user to lock the viewer in its current position. From thatmoment, it will no longer move automatically when scanning. However, you canzoom and rotate at will and the viewer will remain static while the acquisition is inprogress. This can be useful when trying to acquire data on small details on apart. The default value is unchecked.
Show Volume Bounding Box controls the display of the volume bounding box. Ifunchecked, the bounding box will no longer be displayed. In its default position, the bounding box will be shown.
Change Display Colorsgives the user the choice of the colors used in the 3DViewer as it is shown in the following figure. Change will prompt the user to selecta new color and Restore will revert the color to the one used before opening thedialog. The Defaultbutton will revert the colors to their factory value. ZScan 2.0offers to parameter all possible colors in the 3D Viewer, so you can customize the
scanning experience to your needs.

Two expanding panels are available when the Positioning Features mode is selected inthe Scan Tree.
The Positioning Features Detailspanel givesinformation about the total number of featuresin the current scan and the number of c urrentlyobserved features.
The Positioning Features Parameterscontainstwo parameters available to the user: theFeature Type and the Optimize PositioningModel algorithm.
The Feature Type allows the userto choose between the type ofpositioning feature currently in
use. The default value is the type of features that was shipped with thescanner, but it can be changed to work with other positioning features byZCorp Please note that only ZScanner features can be used with thescanner. Contact your reseller for more information about the differentchoices in positioning features.
The Optimize Positioning Model algorithm will consider all of theobservations of the positioning targets and optimize their position. This willallow a better precision in the resulting positioning model, henceincreasing the accurac y of the scanned surface.

Reference Mode
The ZScanner 800 is self-positioning and must find its position inspace by itself; to do so, it must determine an origin for eachscan. The scanner will use the first detected position to fix thecoordinates system. When the first targets are detected, thescanner uses its internal position to define the system with "X
pointing down (red), "Y pointing at its left (green) and "Zmoving away from the scanner (blue).
Even if this positioning method works perfec tly in the ZScanner800 world, it is often very practical to be able to use another reference, or simply addone. For example, a user may want to scan in a pre-defined positioning system to avoidhaving to a lign the scan afterward in a third party qualification software for comparisonpurposes. It may also be very useful in the case where multiple scans need to bepositioned together.
When expanded, this mode will show all the references available in the current scan.
Each of them can be renamed and set as the origin of the current scan. While inReference mode, the 3D Viewer shows the references and the facets. The current origin islabeled (Origin) in the scan tree.

to set the surface settings and to visualize the result during the acquisition process.
Since ZScan 2.0, the rendering of the surface has been redone and improved for moreperformance and better looks.
When this mode is activated, the surface functions are activated in the toolbar. These
functions are summarized in the table below.

Edit| FitVolume

Surface Mode Expanding Panels
When in surface mode, two expanding panelsare available to the user. They containinformation about the surface that is in the 3DViewer as well as additional functions.
The first expanding panel is the Surface Detailspanel. It displays a summary of the surfacereconstruction settings, such as the volume sizeand the resolution. This expanding panel is onlyexplicative.
The second expanding panel is the Surface
Parameterspanel. It allows the user to adjustsurface reconstruction settings according to hisneeds, such as the volume size. The Fit Volumeand Center Volume functions are also availablevia this expanding panel. Note that the volumesize affects directly the resolution of the scan.
A temporary volume bounding box is created inthe 3D viewer when these parameters are changed, and the c hanges are applied only

23
when the Apply or Optimize surface button is clicked on. That way, the surfacereconstruction a lgorithm is launched only once, saving a considerable amount of time.
It is also possible to specify a position and an angle for the volume bounding box byediting the fieldsPositionand Angle. In the position fields, X, Y and Z represent translationalong their respective axis. In the angle fields, the value represents a rotation around the
X,Y and Z axis respec tively.
The Optimize surface functionality uses the neighboring laser curves and looks forinconsistent data to try to remove it. As it is an iterative process, the calculation will go onuntil the user decides to stop or until no further improvement is possible. The surface willthen be rebuilt with the new parameters. This function has be reviewed and improved inZScan 2.0.
Higher resolution does not necessarily means better results. Planesurfaces could end up noisier, as more unwanted imperfections
could be caught.
Facets Mode
When the Facetsmode is selected in the Scan Tree, the 3DViewer will show the final result of the scan. The facets arestructured as a STL file, which can later be exported. Moreover, the Facet Editing toolbar and the Facet Detailsand FacetParametersexpanding panels bec ome available.
Even though ZScan is mainly an acquisition software, it featuressome mesh edition functions, which are summarized in thetable below.
Facets Mode Functions
Some of the functions presented here can only be executed in Edition mode. This modecan be activated by clicking on the Edit Facetsbutton on the toolbar or with the Edit |Edit Scanmenu. When this mode is activated, the selection tools become available inorder to selec t which facets to edit. Please refer to the Selection Mode section to learnmore about the selection tools.

Sensor Calibration
Even under normal use, the ZScanner 800 may need to have its calibration optimized. Thistool is used to verify and optimize sensor calibration. To complete the optimizationprocess, follow the procedure depicted in the following figure.
1. Press the Acquire button to activate the sensor.2. Lay the calibration plate on a stable plane surfac e. Position the scanner at
approximately 10 cm (4 in) from the calibration plate.3. Use the Previewbutton on the ZScanner 800 to position the laser cross in the white
cross of the calibration plate.4. Press the trigger and slowly move the scanner away from the plate, to an
approximate distance of 60 cm (24 in) or until the 10 measurementsare taken.Make sure that the laser cross stays in the white cross of the calibration plate.
5. Follow recommendations displayed in the Sensor Diagnostic area.

It is possible to see your factory calibration date as well as last optimization date. Pleasenote that for you to see your fac tory calibration date, your scanner must have beencalibrated after the ZScan 1.3 release date (J uly 1st, 2007).
Press the Defaultbutton to reset the sensor calibration to itsfactory settings. Use this functionality only if, for some reason, theoptimization process fails to give valid results. It is also possible to
restore the scanner to the factory settings via the SensorManager.
Sensor Configuration
This tool is used to configure the sensors laser power and the cameras shutter timeaccording to the type of surface you wish to scan. Since each surface has differentreflec tion properties, it is important to adjust the sensor's parameters to get an optimal
detection of the laser lines. The figure below shows the sensor configuration dialog.
To configure the sensor correctly, hold the scanner at the nominal distance from theobject (~30 centimeters) and press the trigger. The laser lines will be displayed in grey, yellow or red, depending if they are exposed correctly. The parameters should be set so

that a majority of detected laser points are included in the reliable zone (yellow). If thelaser lines are underexposed, they will not be detected entirely. On the other hand, iflaser lines are saturated, there will be a lot of noise in the resulting scan and the laser lineswill not be detected prec isely.
It is possible to adjust the parameters through the two sliders at the bottom of the dialog.
The Laser Powerslider controls the output power of the laser. It is expressed as apercentage of the peak laser power. A higher value will result in less points beingunderexposed. The Shutterslider controls the exposure time of each frame and isexpressed in milliseconds. A higher value in that slider means that more light will comefrom the laser line, and it will appear more saturated.
The Auto Adjusttool will adjust the scanner parameters and find which parameters will beoptimal for the object the user is trying to scan. This works well if the laser lines are entirelycontained within the object to scan. It can be used as an initial approximation if the laserlines are only partially enclosed within the object to scan.
The Save button can be used to save a template of parameters, which can later beloaded with the Open button. It can prove to be useful when scanning similar objec ts.
Sensor parameters can be restored to their default setting by hitting the Defaultbutton. Itis possible to reset the parameters to what they were before opening the sensorconfiguration tool by hitting the Resetbutton.
Sensor Manager
At the end of the installation process, or at all times after that, it is possible to access thesensor manager in order to manage the configuration and license files for your scanner. This utility is available through the menu Configure | Sensor Manager.
The figure below shows the main sensor manager window. The main feature of thiswindow is the Sensor list, which include all the sensors installed on that particularcomputer. It is possible to install more than one scanner on the same computer, as in theexample below. The Configurationand License columns show the status of theconfiguration and license files for one particular scanner. If the files are correctly installed, there will be a mark in the respective checkbox.
The column Active indicate whether a particular scanner is currently active. In order toimprove ZScan's loading time, it is possible to deactivate scanners. The improvement inperformance when starting the software will be most noticeable if many scanners areinstalled on the same computer. Please note that having many active scanners won't
impact on ZScan's scanning performance.
In the example below, the scanner OKis installed correc tly and is currently active. Thescanner Inactive is correctly installed, but cannot be used as it is currently deactivated. The scanner NoConfig cannot be used as its configuration file is missing and is thereforeinactive.

Scanning Techniques
Object Preparation
Applying targets
It is essential to prepare the object prior to scanning. Reflective targets must be affixedrandomly on the object with a minimal distance of 20 mm (0.75 in) between them. Forsurfaces with a low curvature, the distance between each target can reach 100 mm (4in). Those targets will enable the system to position itself in space. Positioning targets mustbe applied on plane surfaces, keeping at least 12 mm from the edges on every side.
Here is an example of proper target distribution.
-

38/51
ZScan Manual
34
For better digitization, any object that is shinny, black, transparentor reflec tive, (mirror, shiny or metallic surface) might need to be
covered with white powder in order to give it a matte finish.
Proper target distribution may be difficult to obtain, particularly forsmall surfac es (small objects). It is then suggested to distribute the
targets on a plane (preferably black/dark and matte) and toplace the object on this plane.
Importing Positioning Features
It is possible to import in ZScan a previously acquired positioning model or positioningfeatures acquired by the ZScanner 800 or by a photogrammetry system. The two types of
files that can be imported are .txt and .obc files.
The text files (.txt) to be imported must include three columns (X, Y, Z), separated with aSPACE. The three c olumns represent the center of the target. Files exported by ZScan areexported in the right format and can be used natively by the software.
The .obc files are files produced by AICON photogrammetry systems. These files can beimported directly into ZScan.
Imported targets will then appear as spheres in the 3D Viewer as it is impossible for ZScanto know in which direction they are. The scanner will use the positioning targets patternto position itself in space and will add the normal after detecting the targets for the firsttime. Please note that only ZScanner targets can be recognized. Any other type ofreflective target will not be usable in ZScan.
Using Sensor Configuration
Depending on the color and finish of the part to scan, the ZScanner 800's parametersmay require a little tuning. These adjustments are necessary to allow acquisition and tolimit the level of noise in the data. While the default laser and camera parameters are setfor a wide range of surfaces, it is possible that they need to be c hanged in order toacquire the data properly. Moreover, when the part to scan includes more than onecolor or finish, adjusting laser parameters becomes more complex.
Three situations can occ ur when trying to scan:
Under-exposition: The reflection of the laser is not or is weakly perceived by thecameras. There is not enough information gathered by the software to calculateand build a mesh from the physical surface.
Saturation: The reflection of the laser is so intense that the cameras are blinded. The laser line is not clearly defined and may lead to an improper surfacereconstruction, or an unusual amount of noise in the data.
-
7/29/2019 Zcorp Series Zscanner 800 User Guide Manual En
39/51
ZScan User Guide
35
Reliable: The laser is reflected as a clean and defined line. Surface calculation isdone under ideal circumstances.
Before starting the acquisition proc ess, it is important to optimize the configuration of theZScanner 800 for the part being scanned. An adequate scanner configuration will ensurea good detection of the laser lines and a proper reconstruction of the surface. Please
refer to the Sensor Configuration section for more information on the SensorConfiguration dialog.
Since it is possible to change the configuration of the sensor during the scan, manystrategies can be adopted for scanning multi-shaded parts. If the contrast is low, acompromise can be reached between the different colors and still get a good result onthe laser lines detection. However, if the contrast on the piece is high, it is best to scanone part of the object, change the sensor configuration and finish the scan with the restof the scan. Please note that it is not necessary to stop the scan to access the SensorConfiguration dialog.
Calibrate Scanner
The ZScanner 800 being a high prec ision measurement instrument, calibration is crucial toensure the quality and accuracy of the results. J ust like for any standard measurementinstrument, ca libration is made using a known reference. When on the field, because ofchanges in the environment of the sensor, calibration may be affected. These changesare mostly due to variations in temperature or pressure, and result in modifications of themechanical c onfiguration.
The glass plate is used to compensate for these changes. The software optimizes thecalibration in order to get back to the initial measuring characteristics, but in a differentenvironment.
-

40/51
ZScan Manual
36
When acquiring data of the calibration plate, it is important to be as perpendicular tothe plate as possible and to keep the laser cross in the white area of the plate.
Ten measures of the targets on the plate are taken. That data is compared to the knowndata of the initial ca libration. Depending on the results of the comparison, the calibrationmay be accepted or rejected. If accepted, the sensor is ready to scan.
If the calibration fails, some details need to be checked before concluding to adec alibrated scanner:
1. There are no reflective objects near the calibration plate. Detection of a falsepositioning feature is likely to make the process fail. In that case, remove theobjects and try again.
2. Verify that the calibration targets are in good condition. Every target on the plateshould be in perfect condition. Even only one damaged or misplaced target willproduce an Optimization failed message.
3. Click on the Defaultbutton in order to restore the calibration to the factorysettings and try the optimization again.
If all these steps fail, please contac t Customer Support for further help.
The reflective targets of the calibration plate do not have thesame coating than the ones used for scanning. Because of this, their sensitivity to exterior contaminants is greater. It is thereforeimportant not to touch them with your fingers or any other oily
substance.
Proper Scanning DistanceWhile digitizing, a meter displayed on the left of the screen indicates the distancebetween the scanner and the object. This meter is also represented on the scanner by 3LED located on the upper part of the ZScanner 800 (red, green, red). The table belowillustrates the relationship between the distance meter in ZScan and on the ZScanner 800.

Note: Your scanner model might differ from the illustration, but the mechanism remainsthe same
When the scanner is too close to or too far from the surface, itloses tracking. This means that the cameras can no longer position
the targets or that the target distribution is incorrec t.
If tracking is lost, reposition the scanner in front of a surfacealready scanned and trigger again or try to redistribute the
targets differently on the surface.
When a temporary malfunction occurs,it is indicated by 2 red LEDslocated on the upper part of the ZScanner 800.
Editing the Scan
ZScan offers some editing functions in order to clean the 3D model before publishing afinal result. The available functionalities are described below.
Deleting facets
During digitization, it is possible that undesired surfaces be acquired. Sometimes, a shinysurface or a specular reflection can produce noise in the scan. Before publishing a final
-

42/51

38
result, it may be necessary to delete these undesirable facets. It can be done in twodifferent ways.
The small facets can be removed with the Remove Isolated Patchesslider in the FacetsParametersexpanding panel. In the example below, a specular reflection createdartifacts in the STL. By increasing the value of the slider, the small patches are removed
automatically. The algorithm identifies the largest object and removes smaller patcheswhose size is determined by the value of the slider.
The bigger patches (or the smaller patches that are somehow connected to the mainobject) can be removed via the Recycle function. In the example below, the hand ofthe person who was scanning was mistakenly scanned. The Freeform Selection tool was
used to select the unwanted triangles. Then, the Recycle button from the toolbar wasclicked on to send the unwanted patch to the recycle bin. It is also possible topermanently delete triangles using the Delete function.
Increasing Resolution
-
7/29/2019 Zcorp Series Zscanner 800 User Guide Manual En
43/51
ZScan User Guide
39
If you want more details on a particular part of a piece, it is possible to increase theresolution locally. The Increase Resolution function will increase the resolution of theselected facets by 4. As you can see in the figure below, the resolution of a part of thepiece was increased in order to have a better view of the details. The effect of thatfunction is much more drastic than changing the resolution of the volume, hence itshould only be used locally because of memory constraints.
With the ZScanner 800, if you want to increase the resolution on a part of the piece, use
the High Resolutionmode on the scanner. This option will turn on the third camera of thescanner and acquire the laser curves directly in high resolution for better precision andaccuracy in these zones.
Decreasing Resolution
If some regions in the scan have had their resolution increased, it is possible to revert thissurface to the original resolution by using the Decrease Resolution function. As with theprevious tool, this acts on a selec ted set of triangles, which is, partially or completely, inincreased resolution. The following figure shows the decrease in resolution for a particularzone. It is important to note that the selection made in this case was larger than the zonethat was ac tually decreased. The transition between increased and normal resolutionzone is done automatically and in a way as to make it as smooth as possible.
With the ZScanner 800, the laser curves acquired in high resolution mode can bedecreased in order to keep the high resolution only on the interesting details. This can beuseful to prevent unwanted details from being displayed on the digitized surface.

Any facet removed using the Recycle function or the Remove Isolated Patchesslider willbe put in the Recycle Bin.
In the case of facets deleted with the Recycle Facets function, enter the Facets Editionmode and right-click on the corresponding mode in the Scan Tree. The Restore functionwill become available.
If the facets were deleted with the Remove Isolated Patchesslider, it will not be possibleto restore them from the Recycle bin. Instead, you must go back to the SurfaceParametersExpanding Panel in the Surface mode and change the slider to a moreconservative value. The deleted facets will then be restored in the STL, depending on thenew value of the slider.
Facets permanently deleted with the Delete facets function will not appear in theRecycle binand it is impossible to restore them.

First, make sure that you are scanning your calibration plate properly. You can alsocheck for any reflective object as far a 2 feet around the plate on each side. You canalso try to "Reset" your Configuration File by using the Default button in the CalibrationWindow.
I had a "Out of memory" error and now there is no surface or facets in my session.
Your data was not lost in the process. The new memory manager will inform you that it isout of memory and was not able to rebuild the surface/facets. You can set yourresolution to a lower level and try to rebuild the surface. If this is unsuccessful for anyreason, set the resolution to Low, save your session, restart ZScan and try to open it again.
Some holes appear when I increase the resolution.Increasing resolution requires more data. Holes can be created if there is not enoughdata to reconstruct the surface at this resolution.
My surface doesnt appear completely when in Facets view. The part you are scanning may be too large or may not be centered in the scanningspace. Make sure that your scan is properly positioned using the functions available inSurface view.
Scanning Techniques Solutions
I am not able to scan small parts.Smaller parts require more data. Contrast is very important for the scanner to detectwhat to scan and what not to scan. If it looks like it is not catching the surface, try using abackground that is the same color as the part you are trying to scan.
I have some trouble scanning the darker surfaces or parts of the surface. It is very important to adjust the laser power and shutter time according to each surfaceto scan.
Miscellaneous Solutions
