ZDHC Laboratory Programme Continuous Improvement

• Implement ZDHC Wastewater SAP, Sludge SAP and Electronic Data

Reporting.

• Support and respect data integrity in ZDHC Gateway – Wastewater Module

○ Provide reporting limit with ND

○ Provide calculated reporting limits (not ZDHC discharge limit)

• Implement ZDHC specific DQI’s/DQO’s.

• Due Diligence - including random data audits.

Why is Data Quality Important?

2020 is around the corner.

Report on: 1. Progress

2. Impact

Which supports us in updating ZDHC Tools.

Page 21: ZDHC Wastewater Laboratory Sampling and Analysis Plan …

Why Data Quality?

Why Now?

page021© Stichting ZDHC Foundation. 2019. All rights reserved.

● There are 3,200+ wastewater test reports on

ZDHC Gateway Wastewater Module

● Programme & Task Team have:

○ Review & analyse test data in different

aspects and in different angles

○ Found it difficult to analyse & draw

conclusion from results

● Therefore, data quality is the key moving

forward.

● Test Reports submitted in the Gateway between Nov 2017 – April 2019

● Analysed for different purposes such as Impact Reporting, Task Team Work, etc

WHAT HAVE WE ANALYSED?

Examples: (Data Period: Nov 2018 - Jan 2019 - Snapshot Only)• Overall Inconsistency

• Data Errors (Example: “No Unit”, “o” instead of “0” etc.)

• Blank Information (no idea if not tested or not filled in)

• Unsure where results come from (Example: Result listed as “0”)

• Leaving incoming water out, even when there are failures in

discharge wastewater.

• Not testing all parameters:

• Sample missing or not requested

• Not enough sample, not requested etc.

• No information why not tested (requested by customer or sample issues)

To be able to measure progress or to compare we need ‘standardised’ data. Standardised Data would mean all parameters to be tested / no omissions / no personalisation.

page025

We have found 74% Reports audited with following issues

1. Analyte: Persistent Foam – Visible or Not-

Visible is a drop down option in Gateway.

Analyte is usually left blank instead of choosing

the correct drop-down item in Gateway.

2. Standard Test Method – usually tagged as “-”

or “Standard Test Method” in Gateway

Example:

Missing Fields

BLANK FIELDS● A persistent & critical issue observed in the

Gateway.

● Affects the clarity of the ClearStream report as

readers would not know

○ If there was no detection on that specific

analytes, or

○ If testing was not done or

○ If it was unintentionally leftout

● This hinders credible data analysis

AIM & OBJECTIVES:• Identify the scale of the data gaps and areas where data are prone to errors

• Put forward this errors to the accepted laboratories can responsible to amending data issues

• Clean-up existing data so they can be usable for future data analysis

• Draw future improvement plans

• Select & commission a third party data specialist.

• Specify project & data scope

Third party data specialist to:

• Identify and categoriseerrors,

• Conduct initial cleansing on obvious mistakes such as:

• Obvious typos, • Double spacing,

• Commas instead of dots for decimal places

ZDHC will reach out to ZDHC Accepted Labs to correct identified errors that the third party data specialist cannot correct. For example:

• Gaps in facility names

• Missing data points

• Other significant errors…

What is Electronic Data Reporting

(EDR)?

page035

● Background○ Currently, labs have to enter test results

manually onto ZDHC Gateway Wastewater

Module

○ A time consuming exercise and prone to

manual entry error

● What is Electronic Data Reporting?○ A system where data are transferred

(almost) automatically from Laboratory

Information Management System (LIMS) to

Gateway

○ To increase data accuracy and reliability

○ Improve productivity of ZDHC, Task Teams

& Accepted Labs

Data Upload Specification

page042

File Format: .xlm

Data Upload System: Drag & Drop Via ZDHC Gateway

(Looking into the possibility of Secured File Transfer Protocol – SFTP)

Maximum file size: 10 MB

(ADEC will need to run tests on the system to ensure speed for data

transfer and validation speed can be ran at an optimal level)

Others: Possibility to upload multiple test reports within

one data template at the convenience of the lab

!

Note:The entire dataset will be rejected in

case of an single data error. In this

case, labs may consider upload test

report one at a time before they are

confident that the data are always 100%

correct

What does Data Validation In The

Wastewater Module Involve?

page043

AUTOMATIC CHECK OF DATA CONSISTENCY BEFORE ACCEPTING THE DATA ONTO THE SYSTEM

HAS DATA BEEN ENTERED ACCORDING TO THE STANDARDISED DATA RULE?• Correct and complete entry of ALL analytes

• In case certain analytes are not analysed, need to provide reasons for not testing

• Correct use of decimal points

• Correct number significant figures in test results and reporting limits (maximum 3 s.f.)

• Correct entry of units

MULTIPLE TESTING LESS THAN A 3 MONTH GAP?• System will flag up that this is the case

• Actively ask the lab/suppliers if they want to upload this round of test data (but not

blocking the upload)

What does Data Validation In The

Wastewater Module Involve?

page044

AUTOMATIC CHECK OF DATA CONSISTENCY BEFORE ACCEPTING THE DATA ONTO THE SYSTEM

INCORRECTIVE INFORMATION BEEN ADDED OR CONFLICT OF INFORMATION?• The system will flag up the issues and block the upload until they are rectified or resolved

directly on the system (either by labs or suppliers)

WHAT ELSE DOES DATA VALIDATION DO?• Applying testing & sampling rule according to WWG & based on the facility’s discharge type

and/or material type

• Conclude the outcome (i.e. foundational, progressive & aspirational) based on the limits of

latest WWG & specific industry requirements (e.g. MMCF, Leather, PU Coated Fabric, Textile

etc.)
