Welcome to Leitax, this is our Zeiss/Contax for Sony page. As you know, this site is focused to give morepossibilities to our film or digital cameras and, finally, with our replacement bayonet, we can use a selectionof Contax lenses on our Sony/Minolta cameras.

The same as with Leica lenses, this conversion is fully reversible and will not damage the lens nor thecamera. The Zeiss/Contax lenses will focus to infinity, and, adding an appropriate chip to the bayonet, ourcameras will give focus confirmation, will meter in Av mode (stop down), and will stabilize the Zeiss/Contaxlenses.

Unfortunately, the Contax lenses present a variety of different bayonets models and sizes, and the gradationof difficulty goes from easy to almost impossible. So lets start with the easy ones, the Contax MM type withnarrow diameter bayonet.

which is said to be as good as primes, and this is the way to use it on a Sony camera.Warning: this one is a bit risky, I would recommend only for professionals and really daring and advanceddiyers. Take a look here.

- Some of the newer Sony cameras will need to communicate with a chip to work at all. You can easily gluea chip yourself or make it to be sent to me, I will install the chip on your Leitax bayonet for free.

- As far as I know, the A100, A700 and A900 still can work in manual mode without a chip.

- To have the Super Steady Shot system working properly, you'd have to order the correct chip with themax. aperture and focal length of your Contax lens pre-programmed in it. - I recommend the more advanced chip (the thinner model -M42C) from James Lao http://www.eadpt.com/ ,if you want me to glue the chip in your bayonet, please add "Leitax" in the text box when ordering in his webshop and he will send your chip to me. Or you can find him in Ebay ( james_dn )

- To glue yourself the electronic chip, just support it to the left or to the right in the precisely machined sloton our Leitax Contax-Sony bayonet, depending of the chip model (take a look at the pictures below).

- The Leitax bayonet also accepts simpler chip models that you can find in Ebay.

- For metering, I use the stop-down method in Av mode, to have an accurate metering, remember to set thewidest aperture on the Sony camera.

- NEW! I've discovered that my A350 can take pictures without the chip. In Manual mode, just turn thecontrol wheel to set the speed and you will see the scale in the viewfinder showing the current exposurevalue.In Manual mode, the camera will take the picture and will save it in the memory card. If you have a differentcamera model and can try it, please tell me if it works too.But we don't have focus confirmation and the anti-shake works correct only for the 50mm default value.

You may need a genericSony/Minolta rear lens cap. 2 Euro

-It has a rubber O-Ring that sealsthe lens from dust and moisture.

-The O-ring also forms tightfriction, it will avoid losing the cap.

Now, unscrewthe three upperbayonet screws.Use a goodscrewdriver, notthose cheapones fromhobby shops,these screwsare glued to thethreads and it isnecessary tomake enoughpressure andturn themcarefully.

And remove it.

Now, unscrewthe bayonet.

When they areapart, look forthe bearing ball,it should benear its place,over the smallspring.

Now look at thisspring, we needto uncouple thisside from thehook.Usually, there isa bit of glue tosecure it, don'tpull the spring,it can bedeformed orbroken, justscratchpatiently theglue with apointed tool or aneedle.

The spring isfree now.

With the plastictool, lift a bit thesteel ring.

And push it tothe right, so itcan be removedfrom the Contaxbayonet.

In case thesteel ringdoesn't move tothe right, itmeans it gotglued justunder thesquare slot.This is becausethey droppedglue over thatscrew and someglue went underthe steel ring.Also could beglued aroundthe roundholes, from thebayonet screws.So we need toremove thatscrew and thesquare piecethat it attaches .

Now, to ungluethe steel ring,use the plastictool to avoidscratches. Put itlike the pictureand turn it.Please don't tryto remove thesteel ring liftingit by theopposite side,you will bend it.

This lever willinterfere withthe rotating oneat the Sony orMinolta camera.

Also wouldinterfere withthe chip in caseyou install one.

This lever isattached withtwo screws onalmost alllenses.

Please lookhere at theother type oflever'sattachment.

Here you cansee the mark Idid with theneedle, now wecan replace thelever exactly atthe same placeif ever needed.

Put thediaphragm ringon the lens, youwill see a leverinside thatcommands theblades, whichgoes inside thisu shaped pieceof clear metal.Now you mustbe able to openand close thediaphragmrotating thering.

Put a little bit ofthe specialgrease on thissmall spring, sothe bearing ballwill get stickedto it.

Bring the smallball to its place, better don'tuse tweezers ,the tip of yourscrewdriver withsome greasewill not lose it,

And the ball ison the spring,leave an smallamount ofgrease on theball.

So we caninstall the newSony bayonet,be careful now,first find thecorrect positionlooking at thechip machinedslot in thebayonet, it goesin front the lensscale center.Then check ifthe screw holesare wellaligned, andfinally put theSony bayonetlowering itvertically.And, finally,tight the fourscrews in crosspattern

So we can useseveral Zeiss/Contax lenseson our Sonyand Minoltacameras.
