What is Zentangle?

Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity.

What’s the difference between tangling and doodling?“There has been much debate over what Zentangle really is. There are those who think it’s nothing more than ‘mindless doodling.’ Which then escalates to asking, ‘Can doodling really be considered an art form?’ I view doodling and Zentangle as totally different exercises, each serving a specific purpose.

Why do it?

Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being.

Assignment 1: Squares

Assignment 1

Create 24 or more Zentangle

squares on two sheets. Squares are 1”x1”. This is a great way to begin experimenting.

More Squares

How to Begin Squares

Assignment 2: Abstract Design

• Crate a square paper of at least 6”x6” and fill with Zentangles.

• You may add color to highlight certain areas, however, the creation should be a balance of light and dark.

Assignment 3: Concrete design

• Create a picture using an object that is recognizable.

• Fill it with Zentangles.

• You can create a background to fill the page or use color to accent your picture.
