Commercial wind turbines

• Capacity is between 10kW and 100kW

• Made for manufacturing facilities, large retail, farms, commercial and government buildings.

• produce electricity to power a residential home

• Typical tower height is less than 60 feet

Page 3: Zephyrgy

How do they work?

To put it into simple terms:• Wind hits the

front of the blades

• This action turns the blades

• Which spin a shaft

• That connects to a generator

• Thus making electricity

Page 4: Zephyrgy

Today's wind turbines

Page 5: Zephyrgy

Vertical axis wind turbine

• Vertial-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft is set vertically and the main components are located at the base of the turbine

• Advantages of this arrangement include :o Generators and gearboxes can be placed close to the

ground which makes these components easier to service

and repair Do not require as much wind to generate power By being closer to the ground they are easily

maintained and can be installed on chimneys and similar tall structures

o VAWTs do not need to be pointed into the wind. Thus collecting air from all sides. Less Drag, and

more efficiency

Known for its excessive curled seed shell, the Pine Turbine will use it as the back side of the blade to resemble the appearance of a pine cone.

Austriaca Pine cones

Page 8: Zephyrgy

The Pine cone

• Mimicking the pine cone's seed shell.

• taking the "cup" part and the "arm" part as the blades

• Allows the air to catch it from all angles and gives the Pine Turbine an appealing look. The ends of the

shell are rounded outwards

Page 9: Zephyrgy

The darker colored lines show where the bend over the center axis point is.

Page 10: Zephyrgy

The Eastern White has an unusual shape. Most pine cones are oval or round. But this pine cone's seed shell is nearly straight

• The Pine Turbine will be placed in high wind areas- especially near the coast. o Our target is to build the Pine

Turbine for commercial and residential use to power homes.

• Being in the water on the coast allows the Pine Turbine to gather both sea breeze and land breeze!

Page 12: Zephyrgy

During the day the Pine Turbine will be powered by the sea breeze

Page 13: Zephyrgy

During the night, the Pine Turbine will be powered by land breeze.

Zephyrgy plans to make the Pine Turbine a safe alternate energy source.

1. At the top is an empty 2ft. Here will go a bird box. They are used to keep birds from landing on places they shouldn't. The sound it releases scares them away.

2. Also on pieces of the blades will be Irri-Tape. Which is a shiny reflecting surface that is primarily used on agriculture farms to repell birds.

Responsibility

Page 16: Zephyrgy

• Each layer will have its own brake system to stop the Pine Turbine when wind speeds are greater than 55 mph. This brake system will lessen the risk of a total malfunction.

• Breaks will be located on the ball bearings and work like car breaks

• There are three layers, each layer consisting of three blades. Each layer moves independently.

How would it work?

Page 17: Zephyrgy

• The Pine Turbine will be roughly 25 feet above ground.

• The total circumference of The Pine Turbine's uppermost structure will be 14 feet wide.

• The tower will have a diameter of 4 feet. Made out of Galvanized steel for structure and a truss system built in the middle for support

Page 18: Zephyrgy

• Truss: support system, that takes up most of the weight and vibrations from the turbine.

• Each truss will be 1 foot wide, consisting of sides built from 4 inches of steel and 2 inch thick steel bars that will form the truss

• There will be four trusses in the base, leaving enough room in the center for the cables and wires.
