He further congratu-lated the University on the strides it has made in provision of quality education to thousands of students over the years.

The PeakAdditionally, the University awarded its first Honorary Degree to Samchi Group Chief Executive Dr. Esther Muchemi for her exemplary contribution to the country in the areas of business, inno-

vation, technology and leadership. The spirited entrepreneur is the founder and CEO of the Samchi Group of com-panies, a diverse Kenyan conglomerate spanning telecommunication, microfi-nance, hospitality, real estate and ICT.

Commenting on the move, Vice Chan-cellor Professor Njenga Munene noted that Dr. Muchemi was a worthy candi-date following her contribution to the world through entrepreneurship and innovation.

Prof. Munene also used the opportunity to urge the Government to provide free internet across the country to enhance innovation and use of technology, with Maara Member of Parliament Hon. Ka-reke Mbiuki announcing that he would sponsor a motion on the same.

The University was privileged to celebrate the 2019 global Cus-tomer service week in style from

7th to 11th October 2019, at all cam-puses. The eventful week was charac-terised by service-based activities and exchange programmes among staff with the Vice Chancellor Prof Njenga Munene taking the lead by serving at the Students’ Finance desk in receiving and receipting accounts.

The annually celebrated Customer Ser-vice Week promotes customer satisfac-tion by going the extra mile in enhanc-ing customers’ experience and building brand loyalty.

Packed with fun activities, games, com-petitions and awards, staff and students appreciated the vital role customer sat-isfaction plays in growing a brand and enhancing the client experience.

Commenting on the initiative, the DVC Academics, Research and Student Affairs Dr. Alice Njuguna, who served students at the Library, appreciated the Zetech family for a successful cam-paign. “As a University, we are proud to walk with our clients throughout their

campus journey and we are committed to offering them the best service,” she said.

Parent SurpriseThe University crowned the initia-tive with a surprise campus visit by IT student Dolphine Odira’s parents, Mr. George Odira and Mrs. Elizabeth Odira, to the University. The surprise was an unforgettable experience for them as they enjoyed special sessions with the DVC Academics, Directors and other Deans.

Mr. Odira’s family who were received by Dr. Alice Njuguna and Executive Director Corporate Affairs Mr. Moses Maina, enjoyed the opportunity to in-teract with staff as they received brief-ings on the operations of the University at different levels.

Thankful to Zetech for the noble move in appreciating parents, the Odiras en-joyed getting updates on their daugh-ter’s progress even as they learned about the different milestones the Uni-versity has achieved in recent months.

The University is celebrating var-ious innovators following the launch of the Zetech Innovation

Hub designed to provide the requisite environment for eager students who want to change the world through tech-nology.

One such student is Brian Mbuvi, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology trainee who derived a concept from a fidget spin to develop a modern 3D hologram fan, a 3D pro-jection that exists freely in space and is visible to everyone without the need for 3D glasses.

Brian, who is passionate about anima-tion and Artificial Intelligence, notes that the journey began early 2019 when he realized that he could create a beau-tiful innovation that would later receive attention from the Country.

“I was using my fidget spin when a light bulb came on and I realized it is pos-sible to create something that can be seen through the rapid spins. This is what triggered the start of an ongoing journey to serve the world through cut-ting edge technology.” said Mbuvi, who doubles up as an animation expert.

Upon conception of the idea, he em-barked on developing his first fan and contacted several manufacturers; this resulted in a finished product done in China that Mbuvi got to display during the Trend, an entertainment show aired live on NTV from the main campus.

According to Mbuvi, he decided to en-gage his friend Ronald Ambundo to as-sist him on a few things which turned out to be the beginning of his journey in taking an entrepreneurial approach to his project. “Ronald has been a great asset and is now a partner in this ven-ture. With his help, we engaged the Dean, School of Business Prof. Kibas-who loved our project and started link-ing us with potential partners.” said Mbuvi, adding, “We then registered a business, Advaclick, that runs the project as we seek investors to partner with us in development of the products which we have patented.”

The aim of these eager entrepreneurs is to become a leading source of technolo-gy in Africa. Mbuvi added that they are keen on scaling up to create 7D images that will revolutionise how Africa ad-vertises events, products and services.

Zetech and Cytonn set pace for Entrepre-neurship

Varsity invests in free Diabetes screening and counseling

Varsity Upgrades Student Management System

The University, focused on ensur-ing that students get both soft and hard skills as they invent

their future, hosted Cytonn Invest-ments Chief Executive Edwin Dande for an entrepreneurship talk.

The public lecturer was held to chal-lenge students to leverage on viable op-portunities to start a business.

Starting off the talk, the VC Professor Njenga Munene noted that that he was humbled to be engaged in a life chang-ing motivational talk that promoted the drive toward sustainable development in the country,

“Our hope is to compete globally and ensure that our students transition to their desired industries within the shortest time possible. We want our trainees to be proactively involved in the current industry trends.” said Prof Munene.

Focusing on the development of an “Entrepreneurial Mindset”, Mr. Dan-de began by cautioning that it takes more to build an entrepreneurial cul-ture than a money making culture. He said, “For one to gain the right focus, one ought to look at four things: pain points to sort out, team, strategy and

desired results. Identify the main rea-son you want that sort of investment and the impact it will have.”

He added that entrepreneurship does not always mean bringing a new thing in the industry. “ For instance, you can consider improving on an existing business like what Uber did resulting in a revolution of the taxi industry.” said Mr. Dande.

Calling on the students to fight dis-couragement, he noted that when you have people seeing the impossibilities in the gap you want to fill, it is a sign that you are on the right track,“Work-ing alone may produce negative results; it is therefore important to identify a good team and work together to grow your enterprise.” he said, adding, “You cannot manage others if you cannot manage yourself. It starts with you.”

He lauded the University for ensuring students observe grooming which is critical in the professional and business world.

At the close of the event, DVC Dr. Alice Njuguna thanked the Cytonn team and urged the students to implement what they learnt.

In a bid to improve services, Zetech University has invested in a new Student Management System de-

signed to efficiently handle data. Im-plemented at the close of 2019 by a sea-soned software development company in the country, the management tool has empowered the office of the Reg-istrar to effectively document, review and maintain records.

“We have adopted this new system to build on our management of student records in a secure and efficient way. This is one of our ventures in boost-

ing customer satisfaction and improv-ing delivery of service,” said Dr. Alice Njuguna, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Research, Extension and Student Affairs. She noted that the new trainees have already been absorbed in the system.

To ensure the whole student popula-tion is covered, ongoing students at the various campuses; have already been incorporated in the new system.

Commenting on the shift, Mr. Peter Osumba, Registrar Academic at the

University noted that student details have already been migrated and it will enhance provision of services.

Indeed, through increased investment and student focus, the University con-tinues in its vision to be a leading Uni-versity in the world.

Diabetes has been prevalent and is rapidly rising in middle and low-income countries, caus-

ing blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb ampu-tation among patients. In response to this, and in the wake of the National Diabetes Month, the Zetech Leo Club in partnership with the Lions Club of Ruiru held an awareness event at the Thika Road campus for the community, students and staff.

The programme included free screen-ing and counseling sessions for the community by experts that served to educate the community on the con-dition and encourage them to live a healthy life.

Highlighting the need for creating awareness in the community, President of the Ruiru Lion club Mr. Peter Kari-uki echoed what Rosalynn Carter once said, “Do what you can to show you

care about and you will make our world a better place.” He thanked the Zetech Leo Club for contributing to develop-ment of a healthy community, saying, “I pass my gratitude to the team leaders and our partners who made the event a success. I especially appreciate the Ze-tech Leo Club, led by Timothy Wang-we, for enhancing awareness around diabetes and providing free counseling and checkups to the Ruiru Communi-ty.” said Mr. Kariuki.

Zetech University in honour of the International Charity Day celebrated annually across the

world, held a successful Charity visit at the Good Samaritan Children Orphan-age and Rehabilitation Center based in Mathare.

Led by a team of students and staff who participated in the event, the Zetech fraternity responded to a call to bring donations and gifts to the Home.

In the drive, the Zetech community managed to contribute in cash and in kind to address current needs of the home and took time during the Charity Day to spend time with the Good Sa-maritan family.

During the initiative, the volunteers took time to prepare meals, clean the Home, feed and play with the kids as well as engaging in one on one ses-sions with the wonderful children. The friendly family could not hold their joy as most of them interacted with the vis-iting team and enjoyed the treat.

While thanking the University for the visit, Founder and director of the Home Ms. Mercy Thuo, thanked Zetech for the love and support, noting that the donations delivered were timely and will be used to enhance the lives of the 150 children housed at the facility.

She commended the students for lead-ing by example in society where drug abuse and criminal activities are on the rise due to unemployment among youth, “You are very special to us be-cause you are doing something to help

your community. Being an ambassador to this home makes me happy because I started this home as a door to rescue children who go astray due to wrong peers and lack of mentors. I look for-ward to putting a mark in Mathare be-cause when you give an orphan educa-tion, you have impacted a big family.” she said.

Commenting on the campaign, Moses Maina, Executive Director, Corporate Affairs appreciated the team for taking part in the noble venture, “We wish to appreciate staff and students for par-ticipating in the drive that has touched the lives of many in Mathare.” He said, adding that his office is working on ad-ditional community engagements.

The University remains committed to support avenues that are geared to in-fluence and uplift the Community, as it is said, “if you want to go fast, then walk alone and if you want to go fur-thest, the walk with others”.

The University Leo Club in part-nership with Partners for Care and Lions Club of Ruiru Pioneer

held a mobility cart handover at Thika Road campus last December where at least 10 mobility carts were issued to the beneficiaries from Kiambu County.

Speaking at the ceremony, the VC, Pro-fessor Njenga Munene read Matthew 25:33-36 as a call for a transformation of minds in allowing everyone to serve without discrimination. In his state-ments, “I am pleased to see that the mobility carts will help more persons living with disability to expand their horizons in fulfilling God’s given po-tential in their lives.” Professor Munene said. Alluding to the benefits of the mobility carts, Director at Partners for Care Mr. Samuel Wanjau, urged the beneficiaries to have use the carts not just to navigate more efficiently, but also to run their businesses with ease.

Celebrating the move, Mr. Peter Kari-uki, President of the Lions Club - Ruiru Chapter said, “Today has been a good day especially in line with our agenda to empower lives. These carts will make life more enjoyable for our dear benefi-ciaries,” he said.

Lifted“I am so excited to have received a mo-bility cart which will help me with my

day to day activities while comfortably seated on the tricycle, unlike when I had crutches,” said Mr. David Muth-omi. “Many thanks to Zetech and Part-ners for care for the continuous love and support.” he added. Appreciating the key role played by the Leo Club members in identifying community-based programmes that promote understanding of the special needs of people living with disabilities, Dean of Students Elizabeth Muhia, not-ed that Zetech is ensuring students play their role in uplifting communities.

She thereafter thanked all the stake-holders for the collaboration. “We are grateful for the support and I sincerely believe that these mobility carts will be used effectively.” she said. The University remains committed to be on the fore front of promoting ac-ceptance in giving equal rights and op-portunities to the less able in the com-munity. Fun Tips for the New Month

8 tips to become a successful campus student

High School Hook-up

Choosing the Right Course

1. Rely on systems not motivation:Students who do well do not wait until they are in the study mood before they get down to work. Neither do they wait until they feel motivated before they start preparing for an exam. Instead, successful students rely on systems to ensure that they get the work done even when they do not feel like it.

2. Exercise regularly:Regular exercise helps you to remem-ber information better, enhances your concentration and makes you more creative. Better creativity will make you a better student. Find creative ways to stay healthy and feel good, to do better in school.

3. Develop good posture:Good posture improves your mood and also enhances your memory and learning. So, sit up, pull your shoulders back, lift up your chin and you will per-form better.

4. Be organised:Students who are not organised end up wasting precious time looking for items or notes, or doing last minutes work they forgot about. Learn to plan your day, week, month and semester to excel on campus.

5. Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night:Yes, it is possible. Students who per-form well are effective learners. Sleep boosts memory and enhances learning. So go to bed at roughly the same time everyday and make it a priority to get eight hours of sleep a night.

6. Keep track of important dates, deadlines:Note important days of upcoming tests or deadliness for submission of your assignments. This will reduce panic and low quality work as well.

7. Manage your thoughts and emo-tions:Students who lose focus or motivation are typically discouraged. They are of-ten discouraged because they feel as if they won’t do well academically, so they lose hope, Visit the University Coun-seling office and get the help you need.

8. Make time to relaxDoing well is not about getting good grades and outperforming your class-mates. It’s about leading a balanced life that is focused on contributing to oth-ers. To lead a balanced student life, it’s important to set aside time to relaxa-tion and do not burn out.

Choosing a career could be tough especially if you are fresh from high school. Given that it is

a long term decision, we understand the pressure that it comes with it. This week, we share a few tips on how to make the decision easier.

Zetech University cares and that is why we want to share some tips:

1. Understand yourselfFirstly, you need to know and under-stand your personality, skills set, in-terests and values. These are very im-portant as they help you decide which course to take and ensure your fall in love with your career of choice.

For example, if you are great at net-working and talking to people, you can opt to pursue a career in Media Design and Arts, Business or even Hospitality.

2. Choose a career you will commit to:In the corporate world, you have to work hard and with a lot of passion

in order to secure a good job, and thereafter advance to a higher level. Sometimes, there are seasons that are tougher than others and if you are not passionate, it may become frustrating. Think about a profession you can do all your life.

3. Get a mentorMentorship is the key to extraordinary success. Look for a professional in your career line to guide you. A mentor will guide you in making the right choices especially in the field you want. For example, in business, you have various options such as Human Resource, Eco-nomics, Finance, among others.

At Zetech, we don’t just teach, we nur-ture you in this. Every semester, we work with industry players to connect executives with students to share expe-riences and guide them on what extra things they can do to get good jobs or start successful businesses. These are just a few tips to help you make a decision. Visit us today, and we will walk you through this journey.

New month, new things, right? Here are some fun tips we have compiled for you to con-

sider this month:

1. Create a morning playlist that’s ex-actly the length of the time you have to get ready in the morning. When it’s over, you’ve got to go.2. Instead of a diet, simply set bounda-ries for eating. No watching TV, no toying with your phone, or maybe, no eating after 7 p.m. You’re less likely to consume excess cal-ories.3. If it takes less than two minutes to do - e.g. washing the dishes, doing a chore; do it immediately.

You’ll save a lot of time when you have to tackle your chores list later.4. If you need to charge your phone in a hurry, set it to airplane mode. It will charge much faster.5. If you’re playing music on your smartphone and need a volume boost, simply stick your phone in a plastic cup for extra sound amplification.Talk about a cheap, easy solution.6. Want a fun way to wake up on time? Use a commitment device. Give some money to a trusted friend and tell them to return it if you finish your goal in 30 days.7. Also, use music as an alarm. Try waking up to music that will motivate you to get up and get moving!

In this edition, Zetech Titans Footballer Derrick Ambudo talks to former international player James Situma, who is a business student at the University.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself:I am a business man and a student at Zetech pursuing a course in business and currently president of the Kenya Football Welfare Association (KEF-WA). Additionally, I am a retired inter-national and local footballer. Luckily I have played for the national team with a record 32 appearances. I have played for Nzoia Sugar, Tusker F.C, Mathare F.C, AFC leopards, Homeboyz FC, So-faPaka FC, and FK Tirana of Albania.

2. Why did you enroll for a course at Zetech? I decided to go back to school because I realised life after football has to be en-riching and rewarding. I chose Zetech University because it connects sports and academics with admirable ease and empowers sports men and women to get the skills they need to manage their talent. Also, since I am in business, I get to acquire the right skills to grow and maintain my business.3. How would you define your Zetech experience? My experience has been awesome with specifically enjoying making friends at

different level and interacting with fans very closely. Moreover, I get to work with younger players every day stud-ying here as well as interacting with them on the ground; this they challenge me to continue inspiring upcoming players.

4. How do you balance life with all these commitments?Balancing my studies, business and work at KEFWA has not been a prob-lem due to proper planning. A focused man must learn to plan himself. I am in touch with my class timetable before undertaking any other commitment and thereafter I can schedule other en-gagements.

5.There has been a rallying call by Zetech to enroll footballers for their programmes of choice. What is your take on this? The Kenyan football industry can ex-cel immensely with more footballers join higher learning institutions. As it stands, many think players don’t like to study but its not so. If we change this trend and collaborate with Zetech Uni-versity in this venture, then our game will grow. I believe in serving as an example to my colleagues to combine talent and education, to enjoy an out-standing career.

Zetech promoted to round of 32 in Betway Cup

Titans and Sparks smash opponents in the Basketball Showdown

After fronting a great perfor-mance in football tournaments across the Country, the Uni-

versity men’s football side was select-ed in the newly launched Betway Cup, whose winner will take home KES 2 Million as well as a chance to represent the country in the CAF Confederations Cup.

The tournament has seen 48 clubs ex-pressed interest in participating in the

knockout competition, among them 10 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and six National Super League (NSL) sides, as well as clubs taking part in the Division One League and Branch Leagues. In the draw, the KPL and NSL clubs have been excluded from the preliminary round.

Pitted against Uprising FC in the first round of the tournament, the Titans sailed through to the Round of 32 cour-tesy of a 2-0 victory against their oppo-

nents. The Titans eliminated Uprising FC at an entertaining showdown at the Ruaraka grounds to promote them to the next round where they will face Na-tional Super League side FC Talanta.

University head coach Bernard Kitolo is eager to fine-tune his strikers, whom he noted let go of some clear cut chances in anticipation of a tough Talanta side. “We are anticipating for tough matches ahead given our opponents’ experience. I will be seeking to improve our strikers and as we build on new players. I trust we will secure a good result.” he added.

According to a report on the game by The Star, his Uprising counterpart Col-lins Omondi also lamented over missed chances by his players but was hope-ful of better results when they resume their Division II matches. “We played well but we were not clinical in the final third. We were creative but finishing was our major undoing. We will look to rectify the mistakes we made before we resume our league matches,” he said.

The University’s stars of the day were Stephen Doyak and Austin Ochieng who were on target to secure the win as the gents prepare for the next game.

Zetech Titans Player Thomas Ragen in Action against Strathmore

The University basketball teams, Titans and Sparks crowned their victory in successive

matches in the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) and new-ly launched National Universities Bas-ketball League (NUBL) games during the first week of February.

The Titans played against Technical University in an intense game with both teams fighting for the top spot. Eager for a win, Titans player Thom-as Ragen proved his skills in the 11th hour during overtime leveling up the scores to secure a 42:41 victory for the Zetech side. In the outing, Simeon Rabutho emerged the top scorer gar-nering 18 points for his team.

In another game, Strathmore Blades fell to a 64-52 loss to the determined Titans Side as Zetech continued its winning streak. The game that saw

Deng Garang garner 18 points for his team, built confidence among the gents as they prepare for upcoming games.

To crown their weekend, the Titans de-fended their championship, triumph-ing over Catholic University with a 38:15 win.

Sparks StrikeThe ladies team, Zetech Sparks, charged by the momentum set by the Titans, showed off their prowess to the CUEA in a tactful match that silenced their opponents. With great coordination, the Sparks managed a 67:06 win.

The Sparks further beat Machakos University in a game characterized by a gripping first quarter. In the second half, the team converted several bas-kets with Jacqueline Kogo aka “Lethal Kogo” doing the unbelievable. Together with Naomi Bosibori, they pulled great

handling skills to secure a 37:10 win.
