Backed by 35 years of structural engineering expertise, ZFA Design Studio takes an expanded view of structural engineering for high-end residences. For each project, a Structural Program is developed based on the following core principles:

• Collaborate based on a deeply rooted commitment to openness, honesty, and integrity.• Actualize the architectural vision through precise and seamless detailing.• Integrate multi - disciplinary requirements through active engagement with all team members.• • Facilitate the functional goals of the project through pragmatic design and consultation.• Embrace sustainable design through the judicious use & re-use of raw materials and the practice of performance based design.

ZFA Design Studio Sustainability Profile

Recognizing that business and ecology are not separate entities, ZFA Design Studio wholeheartedly accepts the responsibility and leadership role in advancing design and building practices that support a sustainable society. The studio is a member of the USGBC-NCC, is LEED accredited, and contributes regularly to the SEAONC Sustainable Design Committee.

Ever searching for ways to improve the built environment, the studio is committed to the following sustainable principles:

• A sustainable structure must be enduring. The first step inbuildingbuilding an environmentally responsible home is to consider the performance of the structural and non-structural systems from both service demands and the forces imposed by naturally occurring events, such as earthquakes. Through the practice of performance based design and probabilistic hazard analysis, ZFA Design Studio offers a higher level of durability - the ability to design cucustom residences to achieve a specific performance target that far exceeds the minimum standards of current building codes. The result is a high performance structural system that minimizes damage and better protects contents and non-structural components.

• The judicious use and re-use of materials is fundamental, includingthe capitalization of recycled resources, cutting-edge building materials, and performance based systems. Through our experience with rammed earth, adobe, and straw bale, we also understand the value of more traditional building materials.

• In light of an integrated design approach, the Design Studio serves asas an “enabler,” creating or modifying the structure of a building to best support all stakeholders in implementing sustainable systems within their respective fields.

learning the language of structure. He lived and breathed architecture; integral design was paramount to him.”

ThisThis inherited architectural sensitivity, coupled with an intensive background of high-end design and project management experience, enables Jason to provide structural consultation to the most discerning of clients. “My experience within the custom home sector has been a natural progression of the attention to detail my upbringing instilled in me. To achieve the constructability of the design as well as the fulfilment of the aesthetic intent, it is esseessential that every aspect of the project is understood and addressed.”

Achieving a seamless integration of structure and architecture is at the heart of Jason’s design approach; bringing architectural visions to life through creative and collaborative design is his passion. “Now, the challenge is to look beyond the typical to find the most effective and sustainable solutions for each project in a way that has absolute respect for the integrity of the design.”

Jason was exposed to the world of architecture at an early age. His grandfather, a prominent Northwest architect, was a powerful influence, sharing his passion for design, emphasizing the inter-relation between structure and form. “I spent hours with him, examining drawings and buildings,

“ Jason has excellent comprehension of the integration of structural components into the Architectural design process.…I have worked with many Structural Engineers in my 25-year career and would put Jason in the top tier…”

Don Stamp, NCARB – Principal, DGStamp Architects

“ …the construction documents were clear, explicitly detailed and made construction of a complex, custom residence easier…”

retrofit of existing buildings; he was primary participant in the recent developments of ASCE 41, the nationally recognized seismic rehabilitation standard. He currently serves on the Board of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC).

UndeUnderstanding the context of each project is a core belief for Mark. This focus ensures a complete design product: one that is thoughtfully integrated with its environment, provides long-term sustainability, is cost effective and supports multidisciplinary synergy.

ThThrough ZFA Design Studio, Mark seeks to embrace and empower the next generation of engineers. To this end, he actively guides and supports the exploration of modern materials such as carbon fibers, new technologies such as ‘rocking’ or naturally isolated structures, and cutting-edge design techniques such as displacement and performance based design.

MarkMark‘s experience and leadership allow the Studio to take an expanded view of structural engineering - one that is boundless with possibilities, one that offers unlimited design potential to our clients.

“Do what is right for the project.” - Mark Moore’s Fundamental Rule

For more than twenty years, Mark has practiced the art and science of structural engineering, pioneering creative yet pragmatic design solutions for a diverse clientele. A leader in the advancement of seismic-resistant design, Mark is actively involved in code development for new construction as well as

“How simple someone clear and direct can make things... of course, we have an Engineer who is experienced and confidently knows what he is talking about, knows what is required, addresses everything at one fell swoop, and wastes no time...”

William J. Gargan, Senior Bond Project Coordinator of Sausalito

Marin City School District

““We feel so grateful to have finally found an engineer who understands our needs and budget, whose professional credentials make us feel complete-ly confident, and whose genuine concern and interest has truly made this experience a source of pleasure and excitement rather than anxiety.... We appreciate your holistic approach; that you took the time to get to know us, and the function of the center, before delving into particulars... Your keep-ing an eye on the big picture made us feel very well taken care of.”

Peter Overton, President, Board of Directors, Berkeley Zen Center

“I want to compliment you on the attention to detail and thoroughness of your mechanical drawing review in relation to the structural design. Your review is an example of why I am able to recommend ZFA Design Studio without any reservations!”

Brendan H. Bloom, Operations Manager, Brookstone Builders
