Fellowship and Scholar Incentive Awards

For more than ten years, "sabbaticals" within CUNY havebeen called "Fellowship Leaves."

The Faculty Handbook reference athttp://www.baruch.cuny.edu/facultyhandbook/FellowshipLeaves.htmprovides all of the information about how to proceed.• Applications should be submitted to the department chairperson no

later than November 1 preceding the Fall semester for which the request for a fellowship leave is being made or March 1 preceding the Spring semester for which the request for a fellowship leave is being made.   Following the endorsements of the appropriate departmental and college-wide committees and the recommendation of the college president, a copy of the application should be forwarded to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Relations for approval.

FROM: Provost James McCarthyRE: Scholar Incentive Awards – Academic Year 2008-2009

The Scholar Incentive Awards Program provides a valuable opportunity for faculty to pursue researchand creative work. The Scholar Incentive Awards application and guidelines can be accessed at theFaculty Handbook on Baruch’s Website.

The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs must review applications for Scholar Incentive Awards beforebeing transmitted to the Board of Trustees for final approval. Applications for leave for Fall 2008, aredue at the CUNY Office of Academic Affairs by April 1, 2008; applications for Spring 2009 are due byOctober 1, 2008. All Personnel & Budget Committee approvals must be obtained before anapplication is sent to the CUNY Office of Academic Affairs.

The first College Personnel & Budget Committee review of applications for Scholar Incentive Awardswill be on December 4, 2007. School Personnel & Budget Committee actions will have to take placeprior to that date for consideration at that meeting. Applications may be considered at later P&Bmeetings, but applications for Fall 2008 must reach Central Office by April 1, 2008 and for Spring 2009by October 1, 2008.

Please be sure that all eligible faculty in your department know about this opportunity for incentiveawards. It is important that all interested applicants understand the supporting evidence, which mustbe submitted. I especially call to your attention to the application guidelines, which state therequirements for the description of the proposed research and either substantiation of non-CUNYfunding or letters supporting the project. If a faculty member is considering applying for an Award contingent upon the approval of outsidefunding, but does not expect to be notified in time to meet the above deadline, the faculty member maywish to submit an application prospectively that can be withdrawn if funding does not materialize.
