It was an attack doomed from the beginning. Some fiftee"n thousand Southerners swept across an open expanse three-quarters of a mMe.wide in on asssaull against highly fortified Union lines on Cennetery Ricltje at Gettysburg. Confederate gallantry and Federal valor merged in a massive arena of death, smoke, and noise that prevailed for an hour. To men^ on both sides who survived it, Pickett's Charge was the climax of their lives.
