TITLE, PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND DESCRIPTION OF WORK PROPOSED i 5' X-REF.DEVELOPMENT OF A BREED OF SHEEP ADAPTED T0 EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA ——Develop a light—faced, hornless breed of sheep that will produce, in ;LMM - M ._lastern North.Carolina, marketable lambs of desirable quality by or beforeApril 15, and have as much merit as possible in other important respects.QESCEJPTION OF WORK

Breeds of sheep were compared on the basis of such objective measurementsas lamb crop dropped, lamb crop weaned, lZO-day lamb Height and grade andearly breeding potential. Following a mutation that occurred in the NorthCarolina State College Dorset flock, intensive inbreeding and selectionpressure have been used to develop a strain of purebred Foiled Dorsets thathave retained the desirable traits of the Dorset breed.

NORTH CAROLINA AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION

PROJECT OUTLINE

Project No. BJSé—Aill

1. Title: Development of a breed of sheep adapted to Eastern North Carolina {é

' ., ‘_ r3"2. Objective gs): To develop a light—faced, hornless breed of sheep that _i“i§~

(a) will produce, in Eastern North Carolina, marketablelambs of desirable quality by or before April 15,and

(b) have as much merit as possible in other importantrespects.

3. Reasons for Undertaking Investigations:

Eastern North Carolina has an abundance of natural forage. At thesame time pasture research with improved forage crops has gone far towards making

, year~around pastures available. The production of concentrated livestock feeds, however, does not meet the requirements of the State. Sheep are essentiallyforaging animals repairing a minimum of concentrated feeds. It is logical, therefore, that their production should be increased since a part of the actualand potential forage supply could thereby be converted into a readily market—able product without substantially increasing the requirements for concentrates.

Not only do sheep fit well into the feed supply situation of the state, but, in addition, a comparatively mild climate gives Eastern North Carolina anatural advantage over a large portion of the sheep—producing area of the Middlewest and the Rocky Mountains in the economical production of early lambs. Tocapitalize on this advantage, however, sheep are needed that will consistentlylamb in December and, at the same time, possess other desirable characteristicsin as large a measure as possible. 0f the existing breeds, Dorsets and nerinnsproduce December lambs with reasonable regularity, but both are deficient inother respects. The Dorset is light in fleece; the Merino lacks mutton con-formation and fecundity; both are less growthy than desirable.

4. Previous work and present status of investigations in the field of this_project:

More new breeds of sheep have been formed during the last half centurythan of any other class of livestock. Most of them have been developed forthe Western range country, e. g. the Columbia, Targhee, and Panama. These newbreeds have proven superior in many respects to older breeds and are findingan important place in the Western sheep industry. An extensive program forthe improvement of sheep for the Western area is now in progress at the RegionalSheep Breeding Laboratory at Du Bois, Idaho.

No attempt to develop a breed of sheep tailored to meet the needs of earlylamb production in the South has been reported in the literature. The problemhas, however, received some attention at the experiment stations in South Carolinaand Maryland.

5. Gutline of Procedure:

Hampshire-Dorset crossbreeds will be produced from reciprocal matings.Six Dorset and ten Hampshire ewes will furnish the 1944 lamb crop. At least 'an equal number of matings will be made for production of Fl '5 in 1945. AsF1 ewes reach breeding age, they will be mated to unrelated F1 males.

Intensive selection will begin when Fhs become available. First con—sideration~will be given in ewe selection to early onset of estrus. However, rates of growth, mutton conformation, character and amount of wool, fertility, and mothering ability will be emphasized. Production of F25 will be continueduntil a sufficient number satisfactory in all respects have been produced. Each satisfactory F2 ewe upon reaching breeding age will be mated to an F2ram if a suitable one has been obtained, otherwise, to an F1 ram.

The breeding program beyond this point cannot be forecast in detail, since it will depend so much on what proportion of the lambs produced areconsidered suitable for use in the breeding herd. Selection will be extremelyrigorous in the segregating generations (the second, third, and fourth). Re—placements in the breeding herd will be made only with the very best prospects. Thus progress in terms of generations may be slow, but that should be compen-sated by maintenance of a higher level of performance.

When the flock has.become reasonably uniform, attempts may be made toimprove the least satisfactory characteristics by mild outcrossing to whateverbreed seems desirable. For example, it is anticipated that wool productionmay be less than desirable. If so, a few ewes might be bred to a Merino ram(Merinos produce heavy fleeces and, at the same time, will breed early). Amale resulting from.one of these matings would then be used back on a portionof the ewe flock. It would be unlikely that such a mild outcross would result:in the loss of desirable characteristics already attained, if followed by areasonable amount of selectiongon the other hand, it would furnish the oppor-tunity of making some improvement in wool production.

The data to be recorded are as follows:1. On lambs

a. At birth~—date, sex, weight, and condition.b. At 120 days~—weight, conformation and market grade, color

marking, and presence and character of horns.2. On ewes—~seights at breeding, lambing, and weaning time; conformation

score at breeding; breeding dates; lambing dates; number of lambsdropped and weaned; weight and grade of fleece; and occurrence ofestrus during the summer.

3. On rams——weight and grade of fleece; and per cent of ewes breed thatconceived to first mating.

4. On all animals—— pedigrees, coefficients of inbreeding, and presenceand character of horns at one year of age for those kept past marketage.

These records will be supplemented by suitable pictures.

Conformation scores shall be based on (a) compactness, (b) size andshape of leg of mutton, (c) thrift, and (d) condition.

All ewes including ewe lambs will be "teased" daily from June 15 untilAugust 1 or until breed in order to find whether estrus is occurring duringthe critical period. ’ ’ (see baok of page)

Outline of procedure (concluded):

- Rams will be sheared a second time about a month before breeding isto begin in order to alleviate as much as possible the effects of summer heat

_on fertility. Semen samples from each ram Should be examined just prior tothis shearing and weekly thereafter until the onset of breeding. Data collectedshould include volume of ejaculate, sperm concentration, and motility durationin storage. -

Approved practices will be followed in managing the flock. All animalswill be fed, so far as possible, in a manner that will notinterfere with theexpression of genotypic differences.

Periodic slaughter tests will be made to check on the quality of car—cass being produced.
