Zig Zags At the Lake– 50” x 60” by Marlene Oddie of KISSed Quilts
Center fabrics: Use this with any set of colors and coordinating prints in the border.
Best to have 4 values (light, medium light, medium dark, dark) of fabrics for the center
that coordinate with the border print. You need at least 12” x WOF of each fabric used
in the center.
Example shown uses the Lake Life Collection
SKUs: 1216‐21011; 18011; 21805; 18075
Border fabrics:
1.75 yards if a border print, add extra for repeat fussy
cutting. Yardage includes sufficient fabric for binding.
Lake Life 121617685
0.75 yards inner and outer border (pieced).
Lake Life 121622011
Backing: 3 1/8 yards
Step 1: Cut 2 – 11.5” Squares of each fabric. Cut on the
diagonal both directions.
Step 2: Cut 1 – 12” square of each fabric. Cut on
diagonal ONE direction.
a. With one triangle, trim so vertical and horizontal sides = 11.5” and cut on the diagonal into two triangles that
will be the same size as triangles from Step 1.
b. With the second triangle, cut as shown into 4 triangles.
Each vertical and horizontal will become 6”.

Step 3: Layout each row based on diagram to the right.
Step 4: Sew each row together—be sure to leave ¼” seam allowance at each point.
Ends: Large Triangles:

Opened up:
Check height of quilt –measure vertically on the left, right and in the middle. Although each of these measurements
should be the same, if they are different take the average.
Cut (2) 2.25” x length for your sides. Attach. Re‐measure, as described above, and cut (2) 2.25” x length for the top and bottom. Attach. Re‐measure and cut (2) 6” x length for each side. Attach. Re‐measure and cut (2) 6” x length for the top and bottom. Attach. Re‐measure and cut (2) 2.25” x length for each side. Attach. Re‐measure and cut (2) 2.25” x length for your top and bottom. Attach. If you need to adjust to get a particular finished size of the quilt, adjust the width of your border.
OPTION: To miter –sew all 3 borders together, fold in half so you can see all 3 fabric pieces but half the length. Place the fold on ‘0’ and cut (4) at 45 degree angle 1/8” less than the length (2) and height (2) of the quilt center. Stitch to appropriate sides, starting and stopping ¼” away from the end. Then sew miter.
Add batting and backing.
Quilt as desired – straight line inbetween the zig‐zags will work nicely. My example used
a pantograph/edge to edge design called ‘Ripples’ to compliment the fabric motifs.
Bind and Label.
