ZIGBEE TECHNOLOGY

Page 2: zigbee technology

•Named for erratic, zigzagging patterns of bees between flowers•Symbolizes communication between nodes in a mesh network•Network components analogous to queen bee, drones, worker bees

The ZigBee Name

Page 3: zigbee technology

What is ZigBee?

•Technological Standard Created for Control and Sensor Networks •Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard •Created by the ZigBee Alliance

Page 4: zigbee technology

Research on Zigbee

•The IEEE standard 802.15.4 was completed in May 2003.•The zigbee specifications were ratified on 14 December 2004.•The zigbee alliance announced public availability on 13 June 2005.•Much research is still going on with zigbee.

Sensor/Control Network Requirements

1.Large networks that can form autonomously and that will operate very reliably for years.

2.Very long battery life.

3.Very low infrastructure cost

4.Less complexity and small size

5.Device data rate are low

How Does Zigbee Work?

1.It works on digital radio networks via direct-

sequence spread spectrum coding.

2.Operate on ISM band.

3.ZigBee-compliant radios may operate on one of

three different radio bands: the 868 MHz,2.4GHz or

5.8 GHz frequencies.

There are three logical device types in a ZigBee network –

(i) Coordinator(ii) Router and(iii) End-device.

Zigbee - Network

Page 9: zigbee technology

Zigbee – Network(cont.)

(i) Coordinator• This is the device that “starts” a ZigBee network.• It is the first device on the network.• The coordinator node chooses a channel and a

network identifier and then starts the network.

Page 10: zigbee technology

Zigbee – Network(cont.)

(ii) Router• allows other devices to join the network• multi-hop routing

Zigbee – Network(cont.)

(iii) End Device• An end-device has no specific responsibility for

maintaining the network infrastructure, so it can sleep and wake up as it is chosen.

• Generally, the memory requirements are lower for an end-device.

Conclusion

In future all devices and their controls will be based on this standard.Since Wireless personal Area Networking applies not only to household devices, but also to individualized office automation applications, ZigBee is here to stay. It is more than likely the basis of future home networking solutions………

“Just as the personal computer was a symbol of

the '80s, and the symbol of the '90s is the World

Wide Web, the next nonlinear shift, is going to be

the advent of cheap sensors.”
