The Biale Napa Valley Zinfandel and Petite Sirah Vineyards

Aldo’s Vineyard. These old vines on the Biale ranch in the Oak Knoll District date back to 1937 and were preserved and cared for by Aldo Biale (1929-2009) his entire life.

Black Chicken. In the early days of the Biale legend, Aldo Biale sold chickens, eggs, walnuts, prunes, and vegetables. Orders came via the party line phone, which could be eaves-dropped on by nosy neighbors. A “Black Chicken” became the code name for a jug of Aldo’s secret Zinfandel from the barrels residing in the barn.

Nonna’s Vineyard. Christina “Nonna” Biale (1897-1999) was the matriarch of the Biale family who as an immigrant endured and persisted through Prohibition and the Great Depression. Our Sangiovese honors Nonna’s determined spirit and dedication to her family and faith.

R.W. Moore Vineyard. We are proud to produce a Zinfandel from this iconic vineyard in Coombsville (East Napa) on Hagen Road. First planted in 1905, the old vines have been preserved and carefully farmed for two decades by proprietor Bill Moore.

Grande Vineyard. The Grande Vineyard on Napa’s historic Silverado Trail was planted by an immigrant from Venice, Theodosio Grande, in 1920 – the same year of the birth of his daughter Dorothy. Dorothy (Rossi) still works among the family’s original vines with her son Tony Rossi, proprietor.

Biale Winery. This estate vineyard in Southern Napa Valley’s moderate Oak Knoll District is a key source for Black Chicken.

Stagecoach Vineyard. The Stagecoach Vineyard above Oakville has become regarded as one of the great vineyards of Napa Valey’s modern era. The Biale Block, a vineyard within a vineyard, was planted in 1999 – a project that advances Napa Valley’s long Zinfandel tradition.

C C Ranch. This site in Rutherford is a source of grapes for classic Napa Valley wines. The Carpy and Connolly families have committed a piece of their prime vineyard to Petite Sirah. In 1999, we were able to partner up with Tom Gamble and his family of Carpy Connolly Ranch fame in order to source Petite Sirah from some of the most hallowed and prized dirt in Napa Valley – Rutherford. Our Royal Punishers Petite Sirah is sourced from this vineyard.

Thomann Station. John Thomann (Toe-min) was a Napa Valley pioneer whose property was a stop on the old Napa Valley Railroad. This Petite Sirah vineyard is grown by Louis M. Martini Winery and comes from a vineyard adjacent to the old Thomann property in St. Helena.

Varozza Vineyard. Jack and Diana Varozza continue the family tradition of farming Zinfandel at this historic site between York Creek and Pratt Avenue in St. Helena.

Green & Red. Jay Hemmingway’s Zinfandel vineyards in Napa’s remote Chiles Valley produces intense wines with mountain-grown structure and character.

Oberschulte. Long time grower Mark Oberschulte grows Zinfandel and Petite Sirah in lower Chiles Valley that is some of Biale’s most intense fruit.

Old Kraft Vineyard. This historic site in St. Helena was originally planted in the 1860’s then replanted in the 1880’s by Franz Kraft. Today the vineyard has been revitalized and restored by Bill and Margie Hart.

Gaudi Carli Vineyard. This special Barbera is from the oldest Barbera vines in Napa Valley. The vineyard was planted in Calistoga by Italian immigrant Gaudi Carli in 1925 and is still looked after by his grandson Steve Torrigino.
